How to get into 1.6 preview
03-02-2005 09:36
I have been told just how to do this by a 'reliable' source.

1. Open SL client and type in name and password
2. Dissconnect cable just as you click CONNECT button
3. Wait untill it says 'Downloading Clothing'
4. Reconnect cable.

I am told it takes a lot of practice to get right, but you 'should' end up in 1.6 preview. Well so I was told.

Off to test this ;)

Philip or some1 said that 1.6 will NOT be Havok 2 (more likely to be in 1.7 or 1.8) and that 1.6 is mainly bug fixes (cha, how many times have we heard that).

i do not expect much from 1.6 as 1.5 was a bit of a dissapointment too.

however, if lag and sim corssings and a few new prims/scripting things are added then i suppose 1.6 will be worth it.

while we are all here, let me ask a question:

Rotating objects: When you enter values into the edit window for rotations, the object is rotated around its global axis, right?

Why can't we toggle local and global axis values in the edit window? we can toggle them in them when clicking and dragging rotation, but not in the value boxes in the edit window.

Am I missing something, or wouldn't it be nice to edit the values of local rotation and position from the edit window?

Maybe it's just that LL sees SL as a game and thinks it's more exciting and fun this way, like with Magellan's exploration. I'd just like to hear Adam and Christiano's theories.

Ok but only if you remove the extra h you gave to me :) I am not sure exactly why Linden Lab has always kept feature sets really quiet until the preview. A development roadmap would be very nice. World of Warcraft has one on their site that clearly shows what is coming in the next patch, and beyond. I think if they were more forthcoming about what is next, it would help people to plan, and mitigate some of the complaining that goes on.

Then again, maybe it is the complaining that finally drives the development - many of the features in 1.6 are not earth shattering, yet they will dramatically improve our day to day use of SL in ways that have been a long time coming. Personally, as much as I love the eye candy and flashy features, I would forgo them for more solid releases like 1.6 (not that it lacks a flashy feature or two). While I don't think anything can top 1.4 in terms of wow factor (at least until the new graphics engine), this is a great release and I am not sure why they are being mum on it. Hopefully that will change soon.

Thanks for the reply, Cristiano :) I'd be happy with improvements for day-to-day use too.

I worked in technical support for a large, expensive piece of software (3k+ a seat) and noticed an interesting phenomenon. The developers consistenly guaged the priority of a change based on how big a feature/fix it was or how complex it was to implement. The users, on the other hand, tended to prioritize changes they wanted based on how much an issue affected them, including, and this is the important part, on how often it affected them. So there would be these stupid little defects or problems that affected the users literally every time they ran the software or every time they performed a common action, which made it important to them. But the developers would see that these problems didn't have a big impact or weren't that hard to fix, so they would make them a lower priority in the change tracking system. Some of these little issues would sink down the list every release cycle and get dropped while the developers sweated over some big new feature. The change tracking system had no way to accumulate priority. Meanwhile, the users, who knew how relatively small these issues were, dealt with the same annoying problem day after day, release after release, and it drove them crazy.

Sorry, kind of a rambling story. But yes, fixes and improvements are as important as exciting new features. I think communication pays off in general though.

If the notes I may or may not have seen are indeed to be implimented then my constant refreshing of the preview download page is justified, it looks stellar!

Don't make me abuse report you. :)

"Cheese, Gromit?" is taken from "The Wrong Trousers" by Nick Park. A wonderful clay animation that you see utilized in Exxon commercials (the talking cars with British accents).

As far as the preview is concerned, I wonder: Will the browser window be built into SL (like opening anotecard or the map view) or will it be a pop-up of IE or Mozilla or whatever browser you have set as default?
