From: Oz Spade Yashu, I heard a rumor that The Ghost Busters have been called to review SL and are combating all ghosts in SL as we speak! Funny thing involving Ghostbusters... I was watching The Simpsons the other day, and they were doing their version of Hamlet (Shakespeare). At the end of the story Bart moans about it, and Homer says "Now Bart, that story was made into a great movie... And that movie was... GhostBusters!" --> cue the entire Simpsons family dancing to Ghostbusters theme tune music... That was just so ridiculous I burst out laughing... Homer comes out with some real rubbish at times

Its also called the "thumbprint of god" sometimes. Theres some interisting theorys and explinations behind it. I first saw it years ago when there was a tv special on PBS or some such about it, and about how repeating patterns are all around us, like a tree is a simple repeating pattern of a V. Not sure how credible that was, but still. People have even made art out of it and art by calculating it differently and rendering it differently etc.. Very awsome topic unto its own. I actualy forget what it is right now. I think its a mathematical computation present in all living things that no matter how far out or in you view it the pattern is forever repeating. Haha, I don't remember that simpsons. Simpsons rocks, or did rock.

From: Oz Spade I don't think SL is the metaverse yet, its still on its way to growing up to be something like it, but its not there yet.
I've heard there will be some awsome things in 1.6, nothing like "Read Brain Impulses" but still awsome. Waiting always sucks. :/
Heard? Haven't you seen it first hand? =p Reading brain impulses is a matter of hardware, not software. I don't think the user input method is central to defining the metaverse.

The webbrowser bit is actually old news; I'm surprised it took this long to get to prod.
That said, personally, I'm sortof so-so about it. I mean, we already have IE; Im not really sure how much value this adds?

I honestly don't know whats going to be in 1.6 and what isn't. Saying that any certain feature will be in it, before 1.6 is actualy released, would be rumor. Oh and I endorse moistness. Moist, shiny, and jiggle effect, please.

Right now that I have slept and got my normal head on. People who took part in the 1.6 test on the first were all lucky, we were just in the right place at the right time(and then some people passed the info onto friends and what not) LL did not select us for any reason, it was just random. (as far as I know) The main reasons behind the test not being a full preview is because there are still some very big bugs that need to be sorted befor it is released, the main bug i think on that list is a very nice crash when you try and use local lighting. This was the reasons given to us as for why it was not a true preview. As for withholding infomation, most of us were asked not to reuin the surprise for every one else. but if you ask about there are copys of the change log kicking about and screen shots are many. The two screen shots that I had up were photoshoped. There is no FIC (I think ) Right I think that covers it all.

Yeah let's not ruin the surprise. If I hear of any great features now, I'll want them now. I want to be pleasantly surprised when 1.6 rolls out, when LL is good and ready. Let's be patient.

From 0 to DEJA WHINE in just a few posts, I'm impressed with this thread!
1.6 will be available soon, I don't get what the big 'OMGSOMEONESAW' deal is. Some people tested in it, whoop-de-doo, doesn't mean they get BIG L$ PRIZES, or LOTS OF LAND. Just happened to be at the right place at the right time.
You'll all get your chance to use <big feature> to your perverted hearts content, rest assured.
So, where were we?
I'd prefer to focus on the future of SL, and from some of the rumor, it certainly seems like a good step in the right direction. Stop being so damn petty about it.

Adam and Christiano - You're both smart and sensible guys who've been very involved in SL and dealt with the Lindens for a long time. I'd like to ask you a question that's been on my mind almost since I arrived here. Why do you think future features and changes in SL are kept such a mystery by Linden Lab? I've been dealing with software companies for a while and have worked for several, and they usually like to let their current and potential customers know what's coming, especially improvements or changes that address complaints. The only typical reason I can think that they don't is to keep plans secret from competitors, but that doesn't seem to apply here. Do you have a theory, since you're "in the know"?

I would theorise, if they tell you, that's the point at which they tell you. So there will be this one point in time where they say "Here's what's happening". Now, why should that one point not be at product launch? Why tell you two weeks prior to product launch? What if one part of the product shows it acutually has a flaw that will take a bit of work, so it's quickly dropped from the lineup? If they had told you two weeks before launch you might be disappointed it's not in there. How much easier and simpler and more obvious to tell you about new stuff, when it's ready for your use

How much easier and simpler and more obvious to tell you about new stuff, when it's ready for your use Well I can give you my answers, but I should say I'm not arguing they should tell people ahead of time. I'm just wondering why they don't. When an improvement addresses an issue or a bug that has been pissing off your customers, letting them know a solution is on the way communicates that you're listening and lessens their frustration. You might keep some customers that way. It's true some things may be dropped from the release, but it would be odd if there weren't a list of high priority changes which actually define the release. In other words, it won't be launched until these are done. Those are probably the features most important to your customers. Another reason is business development. Linden Lab seems to encourage people to invest capital in the form of money and sweat in developing for their "platform". You make it harder for people to decide to invest in a big project if they don't know how the platform is going to change from one week to the next. But these are just reasons other companies try to give their customers a "roadmap" to some extent of what's coming. Maybe it's just that LL sees SL as a game and thinks it's more exciting and fun this way, like with Magellan's exploration. I'd just like to hear Adam and Christiano's theories.

i know that lindens walk around with people tucked in their armpits. i know that people are consulted and shown preprepreviews. i don't care who saw what early, why that happened et cetera et cetera. i laugh at the fic jokes too.
but some people don't. there's are times that perceived favouritism and condesending attitudes cause a lot of pain in the community. it's usually egged on by a few determined people from both sides; but a lot of people, especially newbies types, get caught in the middle. this is one of those times happily supported by a certain fanatical finger pointer and his avid counterparts. they keep the arguments alive for their own entertainment to the detriment of the rest of the community. in fact, they all argue that their trying to save the community as they rip it to shreds.
this thread accomplishes nothing more than egging on those arguments. if it included any useful information that would be different. but ll doesn't have to arrange to leak things like this. they can just post them. or will the sun explode if a projected feature set if posted today? i don't always get those memos.
anyway, i was feeling sensitive to the community at large because i hadn't had any coffee either. i have now and remember that i'm not the least bit empathetic. i will be excited if 1.6 clearly marks a turning point from playing with cute little clubby features to supporting some real world use of the software.

They probably don't say anything because they just don't want to have to qualify every single change they made, explain why they didn't make any other changes, or for that matter, be compelled by volunteering info to explain or elaborate on anything at all. I can sympathize to a point, however...
...the one thing they should ABSOLUTELY be providing, but which has proven to not be a priority (don't get me started on major, though unannounced, changes...), is info regarding any backward compat breaks. Doing it in the release notes ain't good enough. If I log in and find the Vorago broken again without notice I'm going to write a VERY nasty letter. Even saying, "there are no breaks in compatability" would be great (though could end up being a steaming pile of crow I'm sure).
Scripters and programmers are people too, after a fashion, on a good day, when not hungry, after maybe four or so hours of sleep, and maybe after some of the coffee wears off, for a short window around lunch on Wednesday. Position of Jupiter may be relevant.
I would also like to add that I pushed for an in-game browser window a long time ago and many times since so yay. If you don't think it makes a difference (though of course it depends on the ability of the browser), I'd say take a look at the effect it has on ActiveWorlds. Pretty substantial. All the big builders I've seen use web pages as linked up guided tours, links to other relevant info, and so on, stuff that notecards just can't do (I mean yeah they work but sorta primitive).
Let's see who the first person that markets a successful Site Bookmarker/Favorites thing is going to be.
Funny it seems we're getting a next decade virtual world with last decade internet capability.

So. 1.6 is coming out. And in a surprise twist that goes against the stated purpose of all version upgrades, this version will have *more* features than 1.5. In other upcoming news, the sky will be blue in the next few weeks, the Pope will be a declared Catholic, and the next American Idol winner will have the music career lifespan of a Spanish fruit fly. Could we at *least* get maybe a clue as to when they'll be announcing the feature set of 1.6? Otherwise we're just drowning in hyperbole here...

I heard from a rumor a friend heard over the divider at work from across the street that SL 1.6 will only run on cell phones and Palm Tungsten E's
But that's just what I heard. </Sarcasm>
