Sex sells, but...
01-06-2005 07:42
SL has a free-market economy. I don't think 'moderating' the list is going to make too many people happy, or solve problems. As in RL, 'sex sells', even the promise or appearance of sex, which is what most club events are.
However, it is important to offer alternatives, to take advantage of the talents and vast amount of creativity which exists in SL! As has been noted before, many times 'quality' events are planned, with less than stellar results. I think anyone involved in planning some alternatives to the traditional club/sexy av/hot thong type of contest event has to realize that 'success' is probably going to be measured in smaller numbers. One approach which might yield better results would be to create a task force or committee of people willing to help organize, plan, advertise, and put on some really good, quality events. Planning the 'club' events usually takes little advance prep or advertising, and they're all in competition against one another, but developing a slate of quality events which attract a larger number of people requires more thought, preparation, and marketing, and may produce better results if you have more people working together toward a common goal. One of the benefits of such a group would be that events could be cross-promoted and marketed, to help build awareness of these kind of events. The 'every man for himself' approach may work fine for the clubs.. but for the less sex-oriented, not so 'flashy' type of events, we may well find that 'no man is an island' and we need each other to build an alternative SL which can reflect the richness and quality of the residents of SL. Trying to Add Some Event Flavor
01-06-2005 07:46
Now under Special Events, I have a thread about Survivor Second Life. It will be a series of 14 competitive events at 14 different locations with 14 different hosts. This past week I have been booking the hosts and the locations and almost have that wrapped up. This next week coming up I will start registration for the 14 contestants. I hope for all of you who are hungry for "something different" to participate as a host, a player, or a member of the audience. The goal is for our hosts, to be what one person calls the "oldbies or midbies", show off their build, location and event. The goal for our players, who may be referred to as "noobies", a chance to experiment all that is available in SL. This is EVERYONES chance to exploit all the varieity of events that are out there and available besides dancing in a club and wearing a thong, collecting money. But please dont take the efforts of Waves and I wrong, we also have been known to dance in thongs under money balls
PS Survivor SL should be ready to kick off by 18 Jan 05 if all goes well and finish on 3 Mar 05 |

Some Events I Enjoy
01-06-2005 07:52
Of course I always have great fun at my own PG events in FunLand. The last one was 'silliest thing you can wear on your head' contest. Loved the guy who wore a boat and the woman with the Dead End sign sticking out of her head.
Brook Templar has been hosting some super game show type events of late and I always keep an eye open for them. Some of Brook's include Scattergories, Song Titles and sayings where the first to fill in the blank word/s wins, trivia and 'What Word Am I thinking Of?". Donnie Donavan has photo contests. Each avie gets to submit one non touched up photo taken in Second Life. Ace Cassidy holds drumming events at Tribal Drums on a regular basis. There have been some fun scavenger hunts. Suffice it to say, I manage to find lots of things to do without having to pile on leather and lace (unless of course I'm in the mood to wear leather). ![]() |

Let's make good events and give 'em what they want... NAKED BUILDING CONTEST!!! MUSIC TRIVIA....WHILE SHAKING YOUR RUMP TO HIP HOP!!!! POLITICAL DISCUSSION....IN THONNNNNNGGGSS!!!!! I held a "MUSIC TRIVIA....WHILE SHAKING YOUR RUMP TO HIP HOP!!!!" event a few months ago, and it was a ton of fun. It was "name that tune" to classic old school rap and hip hop. It got people interacting, talking about music during their youth, enjoying each others company. Not every club event has to be a "Shake that Azz" get-your-friends-to-vote-for-you event. But it does take a little creativity and effort to go beyond "Best Blue Outfit". Then again, if you don't put in any effort into a "Show and Tell" event, that will suck too. ~Jaz PS If any of you are movie buffs, I've uploaded some classic (& not so classic) sound bites from movies and will be holding a "Who Said That?" event tomorrow (Friday) Look for it on the event calender! |

Last Sunday night, I was so tired of all the same SEXXXY events(tho I am an XXX dancer, i wanted something different) that I went to a poetry reading. Not only was it a change from the norm, but it was alot of fun, I got to let ppl see some of my writing, AND I got to read some great works of poetry by some very talented folks. Right now, as I have been told,,,its only once a week, but maybe if there are more interested in things like that, it will happen more. I realize poetry isn't everyones cup of tea, but for those who DO enjoy it, you should really check it out

Yes, the events we have nowadays are:
1) Sex things. Sex is good, SL-Sex... no. What the hell is the point?\ 2)Giveaways ---------------------------------------------------------------|-May be same event 3)Casinos------------------------------------------------------------------/ 4)Bingo 5)Trivia Pick one, all are equally boring. Whatever happened to the discussion events? The races? Hell, I miss the things like "find the needle in the haystack". At least that required SOME work/thought. So, seriously, current event holders, stop continuing the degradation of a great SL institution. _____________________

Some Good Events
01-06-2005 11:42
I've been to three great events in the last two days that are definetly not "Thong" type events.
Primtionary - Its like pictionary but with prims. Its a total blast, I love it. Run by Jamie Otis I believe, on the TLC campus. Live Jazz - Tuesday nights Austin plays a couple of hours of live music. Lots of fun. Captioning - I think it was Trimming Hedges who ran this one. He puts up a picture and people caption it. Then there is a vote on the funniest caption. Some really funny ones, too. There are events worth going to you just have to look for them and go to them. --Ima |

Primtionary and Captioning are what will keep me in SL after the trial period. Way too much fun, more fun than I've ever had in an online multiplayer game. Some great UT2004 matches come pretty close, but Primtionary really works with all the things SL does best.

The best recent example of event hosts and creators sticking their necks out would be Omar Drago and LovesIt Langdon over at the Barnyard conducting live beta tests of Kermitt Quirk's game, Tringo, about two weeks past. Only a month ago Tringo didn't exist and now there are multiple sessions offered daily all over the map. Thanks to the hard work of three people we all have something to do other than lift and separate our cheeks at the Scripted Thong contest (which will most likely be won by its own host anyway).
Which brings up the point that some events take more thought, effort, and time, than others. Anyone can hold a doll-dressing contest and a good rule of thumb is the more misspellings in the event posting the higher the chances of "mature" content and that the host is merely seeking dwell. Teaching a class or any kind of mentor event requires a certain minimal level of expertise on the part of the host beyond simply logging hours within the game universe. Quizzes and word puzzle-type games require the host to create a question and answer key along with whatever scoring or seating equipment they need. Prim-based games, like Bingo, Discs of Tron, or the aforementioned Tringo, require the host to devote a large amount of resources (land/cash/time) for game equipment and scripting. What causes the over-abundance of cloned events, such as doll-dressing contests, overly-sexualized or not, is that they are _voting_ events. There is, in most cases, no effort on the part of the host beyond setting the theme and then collecting and counting the votes before awarding the cash. On the other hand, that doesn't make these types of events any less important to the participants. Though Show and Tell is a ballot-type event it is a way to reward and applaud creators for bringing new objects, clothing, etc. into the SL universe. However, a lot of the ballot-type events appear to be "last minute" events posted 15-min before start time solely so the host can collect the reimbursement and maintain dwell at their club. Maybe it would help if we had some idea of _when_ the event was posted so we can ferret out these last minute "Pimp Hat Partayz" and "Booty Looty" events. Or push the minimal advance time for posting an event from 15-min to an hour. |

Thanks to the hard work of three people we all have something to do other than lift and separate our cheeks at the Scripted Thong contest (which will most likely be won by its own host anyway). I agree that Tringo has been an amazing success - with full games and sims. Hopefully this will encourage others to be equally inventive. What causes the over-abundance of cloned events, such as doll-dressing contests, overly-sexualized or not, is that they are _voting_ events. There is, in most cases, no effort on the part of the host beyond setting the theme and then collecting and counting the votes before awarding the cash. No - I think you you are not quite right. What actually causes these events is the Linden's support criteria. To be eligible for a host fee of L$250 (and reimbursement of up to L$500 in prize money) you need to have an element of competition. So to get paid for hosting you need to run a contest of some sort - a discussion group such as the philosophy/theology group Thinkers, or whatever doesn't qualify for support. The easiest way to get your L$250 is to do the sexiest kneecap competition. It involves next to no planning - all the host has to do is ask for votes and count up the IMs. You are asked how many attended for 30 mins or more so you need to drag it out a bit. Some show and tells don't actually involve object you made. I have been to one which counted objects you bought. Maybe it would help if we had some idea of _when_ the event was posted so we can ferret out these last minute "Pimp Hat Partayz" and "Booty Looty" events. Or push the minimal advance time for posting an event from 15-min to an hour. AFAIK the advance notice is 30 mins. To get Linden support (ie the $500 refunded plus $250 for you) you need to post it on the calender before midnight Linden time the day before. There is a new policy that the same event is not to be posted on the calender within the same 24 hours. All the sexiest foo events count as the same event - the thread is here I think this is too blunt an instrument as it doesn't allow time shifting - to me running Tringo at a good time for Europeans and later at a good time for Americans is a good thing. I think Le Cadre's fashion shows where they had say 3 a day for a week was fine also. I would like the time period to be reduced - to not the same event every 6 hours rather than 24. |

I need to check the rules, but I think there's a 24 hour limit for Mentor Events now... I.e they have to be posted 24 hours in advance. There are exceptions... i.e. when Char IMs all the Mentors and says "There're no events... Post some"... but otherwise...
