Why, oh why, is this events list unmoderated?
Every time I click on it, possibly looking for something interesting to do with my time here in SL, I am faced with a barrage of Hott (sic) Thong Contests, Wet Schoolgirl Contests, Wet Schoolgirl Goths In Hott Thong XXX Contests - and very, very little else. Most of these are badly written and laden with advertising for other things, not least the "escort" services. (For crying out loud, if you want that, look at the cards in the phone box down your street.) It should be moderated, if not by Lindens then by players who have been put into the position to moderate it.
And where is the variety of events? Most events that are actually worth going to don't appear on the events list - you have to know the right people to know they're on. Something must be done about this, before all there is to do in this virtual world that has such immense potential is go and stand naked under a ball that throws out L$10 every few minutes.
I'm Kent Brockman, and that's my two cents.

Heh I was just reading the event lists and thinking the same thing. I've started doing a trivia event every couple days and it's always on the list buried among what my friends and I call Skank Events

(Please don't start the "put your own event on, then" bleating. I've done that, and sometimes I just want to go to someone else's event and relax ...)

I continue to find it odd that the only way to get people to events is by throwing money at them and their friends. In RL decent events cost money to attend, not the other way around. What's gone wrong here?
Anyway, what sort of events do you want? I've got the land... let's do it. As you often say.

Isn't there an option to turn off the M-rated events?

Back where I used to go on the internet, there were those quizzes, like internet pub quizzes. I've no idea how they worked, but my touch-typist training meant that I was able to win them, usually! That's just one idea, but I have a few others. I don't really know how to go about setting them up, though - particularly as I can be pulled offline by work or other things at short notice. PS. I never say that!

It's Pavlovian conditioning. For better or for worse, it has become the de facto standard of event hosting...

There are quizzes - but they can be very parochial unless thought goes into the question setting. Maybe I should run an event - how to host for an international audience

Event content in Second Life generally sucks, no pun intended. And what does that imply for LL's idea about a user-generated world?

Anyway, what sort of events do you want? I've got the land... let's do it. As you often say. It *is* like TSO - one venue throws money around to attract an audience and then they all have to. People attend to get free money and to vote for their friends in the sexiest XYZ contest. The theme of the contest doesn't tend to matter as people can win even if they are not in theme. The question is what would a paying event have to provide that would make people attend instead of one the one where they have a chance of being paid. I presume SL is like TSO in the fact that landowners are subsiding these events - there is pretty much no way that they make any money out of this. Some of this could be helped by tweaks to the event hosting support. The Lindens have stopped supporting more than one event of the same type in the same venue within the same 24 hours. They consider sexiest av in green and best thong to be the same event. I think the problem is that the lowest common denominator is how to attract people. It is very offputting - when I arrived in SL I presumed it was full of morons as all I saw was sex and casinos.

I think what it says about the user-generated world is that it's very similar to the real world: lots of flashy, crappy advertising for a product that's probably not all that great.

I agree, events have gone downhill. I have tried a few things......the sail boat races were fun, but poorly attended. Seems the only thing that hold peoples attention for more than 25 mins is dancing around in a thong. Sometimes, days go by without looking at the events list.

I don't even look at events list anymore; it has become so filled with cr_ _! I would love to see some new events that don’t have to do with sexy this and look at my that, got old fast.

Sometimes, days go by without looking at the events list. *Some* people's attention - there are residents who come here to dance and cyber. They are very well served at the moment. Of course, if we presume all the events are going to be awful and don't look then we will miss the few gems. The host has a poor attendence and doesn't continue. I've seen lost of good events fold because of low turnout. To use a UK analogy - the best selling (and probably lowest quality) newspaper is The Sun. We have lots of The Sun style events. The Independent style events would be better for some, but will not be mass market. There is still a dying need for them.
