From: CrystalShard Foo The SecondLife we knew did not go away - it shrank. You just need to find where it went and go there. When you think about it, its not that different from how it used to be in the start in some way: Back then the world was small and had afew people. Now it seems that the world is big and has many people - but as a result, it got divided. The world we know is now a sector -inside- the big new world. I pretty much agree, but I don't think it shrank, the world around it grew. Even that little sector is growing, it just hasn't been growing as fast as the rest. Some of us newbs give a damn too! hehe. Perhaps the recent changes will help that creative/exploration sector expand more quickly. And maybe all the hostility we have been seeing lately is a reaction to that conflict between the desires of those different sub-communities. The entertainment sector which has been on the recieving end of a vast amount of monetary inflation for a while has just felt its bubble get popped. It's the "dot bomb" all over again lol. Hopefully unlike Greenspan, Philip will refrain from re-inflating the economy and prolonging the agony, and in a few weeks or so, this will all blow over. Either way, I think you can still find what you are looking for here, no matter what it is... you just might have to look a bit harder these days.

Cubey,
1) Fuck 'em if they don't know how to act. "These people" are always going to be around. They're everywhere on and off game. Run from them here and they'll find you somewhere else in some other venue. You'll be jumping from one venue to another. Best to stand now and adapt to the new irritant.
2) Your work is revered in SL. Finding screens of your stuff made me want to join in the first place. The amount of work you put into your creations is clear. If SL's true core was made up of the people you've credited with so much influence the place wouldn't be even a quarter as intriguing as it is. Hell if I was LL I'd be begging you to stay right now.
So the visionaries and truly creative people are still in world. I keep meeting them. I also keep meeting people who aren't them. I find that the people who are really trying to communicate something seem to be the most quiet.
People are going to come aboard who are really looking to build something, and they're bringing their friends. I know I am.
It's up to the people that want change to affect that change.
Shit, if you leave, the really interesting people will have to work just that much harder to keep the 'sexie avie' contests from completely submerging the entire metaverse in pink heart-shaped particle effects.
Edit: I scrolled -back up- and found out you're sticking around. Good stuff! I'm always a bit concerned about a possible current and future brain-drain from SL because a small group of loud parasites make it not worthwhile to participate.

Well said, Simon! We've gotta bring these positive people together and keep pushing forward. It'll be like some long walk through the desert on an incredible journey, but we must travel. And like Champie pointed to... Heroes and Villains... remember, the SL Forums are a lot like pro wrestling! I dunno why this feels truer by the day!

From: Cubey Terra Yeah, that's right... I relied on a game to buy my food. It's funny... Until about a month ago, SL was my only source of income as well. I wonder how many other CONTENT BARONS are actually just starving artists. (I have a job now, but I live in Manhattan. In other words, I'm still relying on SL to buy my food. )

Second Life put me through the last year of Uni... My weekly deposits to IGE and GOM paid my grocery bills, it's as simple as that.

Cubey, missed this post the first time.
I'm glad you're taking a break to chill out...
... but seriously... if you depend on something to provide your income, you can't assume it's a magical source devoid from competition, even ugly competition. Remember that most small business ventures fail, and the fact that you have been able to use it as a real source of income is already a good accomplishment.
Catherine, what honestly do you expect LL to do?

From: Catherine Cotton WAKE UP AND SMELL THE COFFEE LL! Don't go Cubey Thanks Cat, but I'm not going... just in the middle of a break. From: Hiro Pendragon ... if you depend on something to provide your income, you can't assume it's a magical source devoid from competition, even ugly competition. Remember that most small business ventures fail, and the fact that you have been able to use it as a real source of income is already a good accomplishment. I absolutely agree. I wouldn't assume that it's devoid from competition. Competition in SL is strong and healthy -- that's a good sign for our virtual economy. However, in RL, competitors will engage in unscrupulous tactics to wipe out their competition. I was surprised to see it done so flagrantly in SL. But then... it's a game (yes, I said the G word), and some people feel less inhibited because of that.

Hi, Cubey, Pahoa noted earlier n the thread how much you have meant to JJW as a friend of our group and all the things you did for us.
I remember flying in your baloons and the excitement of the first time flying The Jade Wolf Hover Craft you made for us.
But the thing that sticks out most in my mind was your honest integrity to want to help. You were so nice to me when I was wanting to create aircraft and stuff. I dont script but you initially helped me n that aspect.
You have always been a good friend and I am glad you are taking a break as well. I did for christmas and then not by choice but for sickness the most of Jan.
Its refreshing to stop and reevaluate things. I applaude you in that respect but remember the rule I always said after the year ending drama of 2003. "I don't do Drama anymore"
So Be well and if you need anything Cubey you have my Email just holler.
Your old friend, Shadow

Cubey! Glad to hear you're going to stick it out. We, too, have had our disagreements in the past, but there is no doubt SL has benefitted from all the hard work you put into it. Fuck the forum monkeys, 99% of what you read in here is bullshit drivel posted by blowhards who like to see their rantings posted up on the Internet and think someone might actually agree with them. Don't let them win, Cubey.

My first couple days in SL Aimee introduced me to you, Cubey. We flew around the entirety of SL in one of your hot air balloons, and I thought - my god this world is amazing. It's unlike anything I've ever seen. And it was true then and it is true now. There were buttheads then, it's just that proportionally they were less. You are a good person, and you need to stay!

From: Munchflower Zaius (edited) The kid got his feelings hurt, what can I say? I never did anything deliberately malicious to him, I apologized to him when he demanded, and I offered to do whatever it took to make him happy. In the end I just think he needed someone to direct his anger at. It's unfair but I understand and forgive him and believe me, I don't want him to go any more than you do. ~Ulrika~

Most definitely glad you reconsidered. I know it's been said many times, but the forums are NOT SecondLife. My suggestion is - as other have said - to avoid them for a while. Heck, maybe even for good being as they seem to be so very... negative.
Lavish in-world with those you care about and that care about you. Continue creating wonderful things, and don't fret about politics and idiots.
