I'm really glad to hear this Cubey! I hope your time off is relaxing, and that when you return you'll feel better about things :)

Whew... I'll add my voice to those who are relieved you're not leaving, Cubey! SL would be so much poorer without you... I've been to the aerodrome many times to ogle the vehicles, dream of which I'd like to buy, or hop on the autoblimp.... I'm glad we're not losing you. :)

Time off is a good idea... I have other SL friends who've done that, and it almost always helps. Take a good long rest, you deserve it.

Yay! When the 30 days are up I hope you stay Cubey.

You make my favorite stuff in world. Seriously. The only non-structural object on my land is your octopus rocket.

At least wait around till they implement Havok 2. I want to see what you can do with it.

I will be very sad if you go.

Saw this thread too late, but i'd still like to chip in:
Its true that this forum does not represent SecondLife at all. But it is also true that the community changed into something that seems more and more like real life as far as "I dont care about you, only myself" goes.

I think this could be attributed to the fact that the first people who came here, came for a metaverse, and to create something new - while most of the people who come here now seem to come for their own amusement and profit. Broad generalisation? Yup. But its pretty true for the most case.

That got me depressed. For afew weeks I was amazingly close to leaving SecondLife myself. I've allready got a long record of virtual worlds i've used to frequent. SecondLife, although its technology is the most advance and its artistic freedoms the largest, was about to become another notch in the list.

But, after some deep thinking, I realised that the problem is the sectors of population: There's the usual "I dont fucking care" mainstream, and there's the (sadly few) special people who actually give a damn. If I want to be happy, as elitistic and ego-inflated as it sounds, I should pretty much hang out only with those who care about what their acts do to the enviroment, and care about creativity more then profit.

So I did. Now i'm pretty much a "hermit" and in contact only with a small group. But now I am happier then I used to. And I still help SecondLife evolve by providing my own insight and creativity. The SecondLife we knew did not go away - it shrank. You just need to find where it went and go there. When you think about it, its not that different from how it used to be in the start in some way: Back then the world was small and had afew people. Now it seems that the world is big and has many people - but as a result, it got divided. The world we know is now a sector -inside- the big new world.

I expect alot of people in this forum to disagree with me, flame me, and pretty much slice and dice this post and fry it. They're gonna call me an elitist or "fettered inner core" (whatever that means), but I dont really give a damn. This post is for you Cubey, and it is exactly what I think about SecondLife at this time. I hope it will help.

Never give up, never surrender. And damn them all to hell. :D

If it's more stress than fun then you should move to something else. Good decision imo.

Everything you said I totally agree with and goes for me too, CS. As for flaming and slicing and dicing, actually it seems if you make a reasoned and logical post they just ignore it and tear into the next one they can find a juicy tidbit in. So don't bank on your flame-grilled kitty flavoring coming too soon :)

And if we're part of some feted (i prefer fetid) inner core, well that's better than being part of the copycat money grubbing freeloading masses who merely spew bitterness and resentment towards, well, everyone :p

You guys should start a closed community sim for yourselves and your friends. It will allow you to come to the mainland when you want, but will give you a special retreat of your own to be a community in.

We tried that, but the Lindens keep letting people join. :p

Ha ha good point :) But seriously if you make a private sim, make it hidden, restrict access to a select group, and then have a nice little community of your best friends in SL, that might be quite cool for you :) And you can still visit the mainland anytime :)

Jsecure, just because we are all elitest members of the fabled fetid inner core doesnt mean we are best friends or that we all want to go live together in harmony. Hell, most of us can't even stand the sight of each other. :p

So we plot and scheme via IMs and secret code in the forums. We don't have to see one another.

Alls well that ends well... and yet somehow I have a bad feeling about all of this.

Cubey - you do a great job here and I am glad you are maybe going to stay - which I know will not buy any groceries for your table, but if I could I would.

Cubey,
I just saw this thread as I don't come here often for many of the reasons you talked about.

I am so glad you've decided to take a break and come back.
You're such a part of my SL history. I remember when I bought your pods and Shad and I gave them for X-Mas gifts to our friends in '03.
Shortly after that the grand opening gift I bought Shad when we opened our first Jade Wolf Store. I stood there looking at your vehicles and said I like that one but I wish it was like this. And it became that. You redesigned The Jade Wolf to what I wanted and if I recall right it was the next day. This when we had just met.
Oh, and then you doing the same for the hot air balloon we gave Lib for her B-day. It was so cool I had to have my own too. LOL

I could go on. The point I'm trying to make is, I know that in the time we've known you, you have definately enhanced the world of the Jazzy Jade Wolf group with your selfless kindness and just plain great friendship.

It would be so sad to think you left because of the visious acts of others.

Take your rest and regroup Hun. There will be way more open arms than fists when you come back and they far outweigh the sad souls behind the fists.

I blame Ulrika.

Cubey, don't take off, remember that the forums ultimately mean nothing to SL in-world. I agree that the population of SL has shifted from its primarily creative-base to consumer/whine/grief base, but at least you can choose where you go in SL, and with whom you socialize.

Stick around, the people bothering you aren't worth validating by leaving.

What I've learned: Simply ignore what everyone else is complaining about (I know that's not easy). Cubey, I understand what you do here, you take to heart because it's your passion and hate to see people complaining over such little things. There's nothing I, nor you, nor anyone can do to change these peoples mind who think they can decide whats best for us. I usually stay away from the forum all together, but Cubey, I hope things do get better for you.

Its irritating yes, I listen to it all day long at the welcoming area and try not to let it bug. It is depressing yes that also. But try not to take what people say to heart, because that's where it hurts most.

Peace be with you Cubey.

I can't imagine an SL without Cubey Terra and his creations.
I'm glad you aren't leaving after all. Taking a break for a bit sounds like a good idea. We all need time away from the scene to recharge and refocus sometimes.

When you come back though - keep your eyes on doing what you love to do and don't let the vocal minority or forum squabbles ruin your experience. There are still plenty of decent people and worthwhile things happening in SL if you can tune out the noise.

Gee, I've noticed that too. And the first one I took on really vigorously was Ulrika. And getting her past her "let's make an asshat with Prokofy's raven avatar" phase (she posted it on the forum) and getting her to apologize profusely to the point where I even gave her 3 posrates was a real struggle. Ulrika has met her match with me.

Whoa, dude, you are like, so awesome.

Hmmm, raven avatar...

Anyhoo, Cubey, I know you probably don't like me or my friends but I think you have contributed a lot of good content to SL and I hope that after your hiatus you'll decide not to write it all off. As with anything else, it's best not to let SL become the whole of your life. While I personally consider SL to be "just a game", I also believe that games can be very deep, involved, and emotionally draining. However, another thing about games is that you can always quit playing or take a break, and when a game ceases to be fun that's exactly what it's time to do.

If I may make a suggestion, try playing a few games without the computer during your break. Invite some friends over and play Carcassonne or The Settlers of Catan, or spend some time with a good friend or significant other playing Hera and Zeus one-on-one. Or if you need something more open-ended and creative, try a good tabletop roleplaying game. One of my favorites, Changeling: The Dreaming is out of print but you can still find it at used book stores or online as an e-book.

Games are good. In fact every culture has games of some kind and I suspect they are a mental/emotional/social necessity, so maybe saying "just a game" isn't entirely fair. But their purpose is to add enjoyment to life without having serious consequences for losing or quitting. You can always walk away from a game, which to me is an essential characteristic of games. And you can always walk back into Second Life when you're ready.

Burn Ulrika on the stake?

Hold a trial in Neuremburg for her high crimes?

Put her in Guantanamo?

So many possibilities...
