Heheeh.. hopefully, you never get into a situation where you need to make a high-speed safetly maneuver in your Navigator!

well I live in the country in Ohio and a SUV is very useful for me :)

:)

I love cars - both Cyrus and I are big car geeks and I've been following the SMART for some time. There is a company by the name of Zap! that is currently going through the final certifications for the SMART to be sold in California - it is already avialable in most other states. I may have to buy one when it comes out - it would be perfect for the city. It is so compact, you can park it nose-in in a parallel spot. Beat that! ;)
Whoa! We'll be in the market for a new car soon. That would be absolutely perfect. :)

Ulrika - that video was awesome. Usually offset-frontal crashes are done at 40mph - so it was cool seeing one at that speed.

That's how it is for my parents - they live out in the 'sticks' in Montana down a 5 mile dirt road. My issue with SUV buyers are the ones that buy it for no other reason than to be 'cool'. There are many, many valid reasons for buying one - and honestly, even if you just want to be 'cool' that's your right, but it's also my right to point fingers and laugh.

Do you guys know who Noel Edmonds is? I doubt his stuff travelled. But he was huge on British tv for a long time. Banal and trivial prime time entertainment type. Well aaaanyhoo. He has a car company. http://www.uniquemotorcompany.co.uk/

These are the cars they offer:

Cute or what? (I dunno if they're particularly economical or anything :p)

I think these kind of miniature compacts are going to become a lot more popular. So we'll soon be able to fit twice as many cars in the same sized traffic jam!

I think we have some of those here in SF. I'm pretty sure I've seen one like that yellow model buzzing around the city streets.

Yes. There's a company on the wharf that rents them out with a GPS-guided audio tour of the city.

oh yeah. and I suppose you might have these, being as they're Ford, but this is the latest 'kewl compact' in the UK:

I saw those when I was in Paris and London two years ago - but we don't have them here yet. Wait until gas hits $5/gallon, then we might see them. Europe has tons of cool cars that we don't get. I'm waiting for the return of Alfa Romeo. *rubs hands*

Surreal, it's not just Europe. Burning or pouring acid on SUVs happens in the states too. Great, so the purchase cost and insurance premium costs go up for everyone as a result, and the SUV driver gets a fresh paintjob. Brilliant.

Thanks for reminding me why I moved to the US...... looks like I've gotta move again, maybe to South America, where EVERYBODY has a reason to own an SUV because the roads outside of cities are dismal.

I didn't know one must have a "reason" to own anything. Why have an SUV? Because we CAN. So some have them to impress others, though nowadays an SUV doesn't impress anyone. Why don't you go after the Hummer owners, Ulrika?

Have a great day, and remember to use one square of toilet paper per bowel movement - you know, to keep in step with your self-righteous ecologist game forum persona.

MUHAHAHA, this is the best comment I've read in a long time! With your permission Rinji, I shall use it as my signature from now on.

That's what I want! An Alfa 147, to be precise.

And I dunno if our cars are cool, per se:

Oh. And this is my car... :o

I love the Alfa 159... MMmmm!! And any cars that we don't have over here - I consider 'cool' on some level, just cuz we can't get them. ;)

Class envy and jealousy, over what exactly? While I may not be as militant as Ulrika on the issue of SUV's, my dislike of them has nothing to do with class envy or jealousy. I am more than able to buy any SUV on the market - but most of them (all of the American brands, anyway) are pieces of junk. They are not required to adhere to the same safety regulations or the same emissions requirements or the same fuel economy standards. They handle like crap and because of that, you are less able to avoid an accident on the road than you are in a car.

That doesn't explain why the same people that hate SUV's don't target full-size truck or van owners. Passenger vans have roughly the same weight distribution as SUV's. Pickup trucks are, if anything, more wasteful.

From: someone

Oh, and this little Berekley-hippie-tree hugger crap that some of you love to toss around is old and tired. Some people are actually EDUCATED consumers and also want to do what they can for the environment that we all share, yet do not associate with the more radical types. So, please quit with the cheeky labels.

I'm sorry if it bothers you, but the fact remains: My best friend's sister left for Berkley as a fairly rational person. She came back a vegetarian, communist, tree-hugging nutcase.

She and Ulrika could be reading out of the same book. It's getting to the point where I can't tell the difference between the two.

I have nothing against the person who buys a car that is safer, more economical, or more useful for their needs. What I have a problem with is the kind of person who says "I hate this because all of my brothers and sisters in the cause tell me I should hate it." There's no rational reason to hate SUV's more than min-vans or even station wagons, but the radical left has decided that SUV's in particular represent all that is wrong with the Capitalist Elite.

It's just not logical or consistent. If you're going to hate something based on its merits, then you're obligated to hate everything that shares those characteristics. The fact that SUV haters are not targeting other products with similar traits implies to me that the true reason for hating them is not the reason they say it is. In my mind, this makes them liars and ruins their credibility.

This thread is now about all modes of personal conveyance that have low fuel efficiency per unit passenger and the keys that shall put them asunder.

Kill them all and let god sort them out!

You know, I've never gotten the impression that Ulrika is a commie. Socialist maybe, but not communist.

Trucks and full size vans are usually used for work related transit. There are plenty of people who own trucks, but most times, they actually use the truck for activities that it was designed for. Detriot has worked very hard (and spent lots of money) to make sure SUV's can slide through the regulations under the light truck loopholes. The light truck regulations were put in at a time when most people who purchased light trucks did so for work, not to haul around the kids and the dog.

My issue with SUV owners come from personal experience. Gabbing on the celphone while driving the bloated vehicle, parking in stalls clearly marked 'Compact', etc. I'm not saying that everyone driving an SUV is an idiot - it just seems that I run into lots of them on my commute.

That's a fact in that particular case - it is most definately not a general, blanket fact. I have lived in the Bay area for years and I don't fit any of those descriptions. Most people I know are of the more moderate liberal stand and very much dislike the 'Berkeley tree-hugger' label that people just love to apply to anyone who gives an ounce of thought and action regarding the environment.

I disagree. My 'hatred' (it's more a dislike, really) is because consumers are uneducated and are buying into what Detroit feeds them. They want you to feel safer in that 4-ton Excursion, when you are actually riding in a vehicle that doesn't meet the current safety or emissions standards. The same applies for all trucks and minivans.

SUV's are the target for obvious reasons - the sales of SUV's have grown tremendously over the last decade and were it not for the increase in gas prices this summer, we'd see that growth continue.

Station wagons are completely unlike trucks, SUV's and minivans. They must adhere to the same emmissions and safety regulations as a car and they have less impact on the environment.

On the other hand, trucks and vans are generally used for important work-related purposes where they're actually useful, not a glorified station wagon.

I live out in the country. Most people here drive honking huge pickups, but - and this is key - they're usually also hauling a horse trailer or a tractor or some other large, heavy object/collection of objects.

Other than the few dedicated mud-boggers, SUVs are used for basically the same purposes that the common station wagon could be used for.

No, and I've no wish to. The city is a disaster waiting to happen, y'know?

(Which is not to be intended as a slight against LA as a city, just... entropy is gonna catch up with it one of these days.)
