From: Neehai Zapata Instead of using an SUV for all my transportation needs, I just rent a truck from the store when I need to move items that big.
Being wasteful is easy. Planning for conservation is difficult. Must be nice to know what everyone needs and how they should manage it. If I took your advice I would have to live next to the U-Haul place. There is usualy not a day goes by we don't use the cargo space. Also u-haul trucks really suck for camping. Rox

If you want to do something about the oil or pollution issues, go ride a bike! Saddle optional.

People in Charlotte look at me like I am crazy when I use it to ride 10-15 minutes up to the corner store. It worried that I wouldn't be able to use it as much when I moved from DC, but I can actually get places here faster on my bike. Some of the best money I've ever spent. Folds up nicely into my trunk so I can park in remote lots and then ride in. Edited to correct an unfortunate typo. It goes in my trunk not my truck. hehe

This thread makes me want to go buy an SUV just so I can take off the pollution control system and idle it in my driveway until it runs out of gas...then repeat as necessary. Alexin P.S. For every SUV Neehai...er, I mean...Ulrika keys, I shall strangle a fluffy baby bunny and slap the baby Jesus.

From: Surreal Farber I love it when people endorse breaking the law out of self-rightousness. Yes, it's quite the rage these days isn't it? It's depressing being so unhip.

From: someone I shall strangle a fluffy baby bunny Oh, I see. I think there was a cultural misinterpretation of camping. Where I come from camping doesn't involve a house on wheels. We just pitched a tent.

It's depressing being so unhip. Especially when they do it to start wars to get more oil for the SUVs so people can enjoy "camping".

Sorry Ulrika - but that's a bad idea. I agree with your general sentiment about SUV's, but some people who own them actually need an SUV. Putting a keymark down the side of an SUV will do one thing: contribute to the high cost of auto insurance that we *all* pay. If you want to send a message to the SUV driver, try placing a fake parking ticket on thier SUV (if you're in NYC use this one). Or, you could place a bumper sticker on thier SUV - I suggest on the glass, so it is easily removed and doesn't damage the paint & lessens any chance of you being cited for vandalism. Guerrilla tactics that include damage defeats the message. It simply pisses people off and ends up costing everyone more in insurance premiums. I suggest that instead of vandalizing an SUV, one should contact thier local congress person and ask them to support and push for higher CAFE standards and more incentives for hybrid vehicles. Also, remember not all SUV's are alike. Some of the small SUV's are based on car platforms and are fairly fuel efficient (think CRV, RAV).

From: Neehai Zapata How did people manage to go camping before SUVs? I dunno - I wasn't around then. You don't need an SUV to go camping. We have a 2001 VW Passat 4-Motion wagon and we use it to haul all of our gear. Each time we go camping, someone in an SUV makes a comment about how much more we can haul in our cargo area than they can. Wagons typically have as much or more cargo capacity than an SUV - its just that a lot of peope view them as 'mommy' vehicles, which is funny because I rarely see moms driving them - they're usually drivng an SUV or minivan.

From: Neehai Zapata How did people manage to go camping before SUVs? The SUV is not a new invention they have been around since the early days of the auto industry. Growing up on a farm most everyone had one. Instead of "SUV" a phrase coined by the marketing arm of the auto industry, we called them blazers in reference to the Chevy Blazer or jeep as a catch all phrase for anything that was 4WD and could leave the pavement. Long before you could get a gold plated Lexus SUV there was the Chevy Blazer. International Scout, Ford Bronco and the Wyllis Jeep. Also you have to take in account before the Arab oil embargo. Cars used to be huge. My parents had a Olds . They could pack 2 adults. 2 kids and enough gear for a month vacation in the family cottage and have room left over for groceries. My first car was a 1969 Dodge Monaco. we could put 6 people in the car and another 4 in the trunk for trips to the drive in (see if any the kids reading this know what a drive in was ) I made alot of camping trips in that car. The car was bigger on the inside than it was on the outside Detroit shrunk the cars and people answered back by buying suvs. Oh before you smugly thinkg "see it's all the fault of detroit" They toyota land cruiser hit the market in 1951. We looked at a 4WD drive station wagon. 4WD is a must, our county has decided to only plow out the roads if there is more than 6 inches of snow on the ground. Never mind snow drifts. We needed a high clearance off the ground. Besides our favorite past time camping which takes us off the beaten path. (death before KOA) Getting out in the fields to bring home fire wood is desired too. Mini van is a mommy car Rox

Ulrika, great idea, really great! Let's apply that to SL too: grief players who use more resources than you. Come to think of it, I know someone who uses an entire sim when she could probably make do with far less. Think globally, act locally.
Note to the parody impaired: don't grief people or their stuff based on your view of the world; that's a Bad Thing.

From: Neehai Zapata Oh, I see. I think there was a cultural misinterpretation of camping. Where I come from camping doesn't involve a house on wheels. We just pitched a tent. A lot of folks couldn't or can't just walk, ride a bike, or take a hybrid somewhere to pitch a tent. Most of us don't live a few blocks from the lake or the woods. A lot of us live or grew up in the city or suburbs. My family used to go camping several times every summer when I was a kid. We had to drive to a campground, and bring provisions for 4 people and a dog. We had a typical 1960's vehicle that got about 12 miles to the gallon. We had to, because we couldn't have done it in a VW Beetle (although my dad DID drive a cool navy blue Beetle to work and back, and subsequently the little Toyota Coronas and Corollas), which was about our only "economic" alternative then. As far as vandalizing other people's property to try and send a message to SUV drivers, that's a stupid way to go about it. It really is. People who do that just don't get that their ire over the situation does not justify breaking the law. I would have to agree with the poster who said slap a bumper sticker on them if you feel you MUST vanadalize. Many people depend on those vehicles to perform their jobs. There is no sure way for anyone to know what the owner of any given SUV uses it for, when you see one sitting in a parking lot. Many of us don't like SUV's either, but just because we don't condone keying them does not make us Bush or Iraq war supporters. Get the blinders off. Surreal, it's not just Europe. Burning or pouring acid on SUVs happens in the states too. Great, so the purchase cost and insurance premium costs go up for everyone as a result, and the SUV driver gets a fresh paintjob. Brilliant.

Did you have a family of four? Please enlighten me as to how my family, who lived in the big city was supposed to get 2 hours to the nearest campground without a vehicle capable of carrying a couple weeks worth of gear for four people. This whole camping thing is only slightly relevant, let's not focus too intently on one possible use for larger vehicles. Let's talk about the merits of keying cars to fight for ecology. Maybe we should all start keying big rigs to force those bastards to start shipping more stuff by rail again! After all, they belch out literally pounds of black crap a day.
