I have an Eve Online account (2 actually) . I had read an article in these forums about a year ago. I was intruiged that part of the standard gameplay involved piracy and combat and the screen shots were absolutely gorgeous.
I stuck with the tutorial, and learned the ins and outs in about 2 months. I even set up a macro that would mine ores while I was at RL work. After month 5, i was bored out of my mind. Eve Online requires quite a bit of time to learn (to me this was the best part). Then once you get the hang of it, it requires that you get skills to use any new equipment or ships you want to purchase. Fortunately skills are learned in real time, but you must be vigilant to ensure that you are constantly learning a new skill. You will spend your entire Eve career aquiring skills. I accumulated thousands of skill hours and was no where near completion. You also must spend hundreds of hours "mining" ore for currency. This too was extremely boring. The good part about this was that I had never "macro'd" prior to playing Eve, I learned a new RL skill from this. For me Eve was not nearly as social as SL, you talk to space ships. The level of skill the players on Eve presently have seems unattainable for a new user, therefore you will spend the vast majority of your first 6 months fighting against NPC's or mining with other newbs. To battle an experienced Eve player, in the first 6 months, is suicide. I still have my 2 Eve accounts active, I am not too sure what to do with them. They are both leveled to pilot battleships and drones and have TONS of stuff. Before I finally cancel my Eve accounts I may pop in, blast the hell out of a newb, then give them all my stuff. I would not recommend this game, as after the first few months it felt like I had wasted my time.

From: Schwanson Schlegel You also must spend hundreds of hours "mining" ore for currency. Argh! What's with all this 'must' business? I've never once mined ore! Ok. That's not true. I once mined ore. Just to see what it was like. There is nothing you MUST do in Eve, other than earn a living... somehow. Assuming you wish to progress

I can't figure out why some outfit doesn't make an online combo first/third person shooter/"interacter" & space exploration/economics/empire/combat game. Board your ship. Launch. Find a planet, land. Get out, have a WoW type experience, then back to your ship. Fight space pirates, salvage the wreckage and sell it, find a planet, rinse, repeat. So you have to restrict the game to a single solar system with, say 10 planets and 20 moons. Better, IMO, having thousands of planetary systems you can only play "drive-by tourist" with. Which is not to say that EVE doesn't sound fascinating, and I'll try out the 2 week ticket. But all of this may have been done before, in stand-alone games like Freespace, Star Lancer, Wing Commander, Privateer, and probably the best of them all - Independence War 2 - a graphically beautiful and enormous game that sounds very similar to EVE. btw, recently I downloaded (free) a game from the early 1980s, called Starflight. Exploration, economics, diplomacy, space combat, and a compelling story, including the ability to explore 800 stellar systems and thousands of world - and land on them. All originally packaged on two 360K 5.25 inch floppy disks! And it's still immersive, even today, even in 4 color RGB. I'm in awe. So it can be done - and was done, 20 years ago.

From: Seth Kanahoe So it can be done - and was done, 20 years ago. Oh absolutely. EVE Online is basically a big assed update on the original Elite. The actual game mechanics are almost identical. Of course, EVE has cutting edge mind blowing graphics while Elite was 8 color wireframe. Oh, and there's usually 12 to 13 thousand of ya playing

From: Kris Ritter Yes it has an economy, but you absolutely don't have to get involved in it at all, save for buying your ships and equipment. As it happens, I enjoy some of the trade aspect, and know how to exploit it to make a fast buck, so I'm obviously gunna And as for a military career path... you can do what you like in EVE! Why didnt you join a security force or military corp? Or become a bounty hunter? Or a pirate if you think you're hard enough? It's totally open ended. There ARE storylines, which are optional, but they are entirely dependent upon what kind of career path you carve out for yourself, who you align yourself with, and what sort of actions you perform. Because ultimately progress involves getting stuff and selling stuff. And that was the aspect I was put off by. Ultimately for my space games, homeworld 2 is more my speed. EVE was a bit like SL-its a game out pretending you have a job, only without the sexy bits. I figure the time I would spend getting up on the curve in eve would be better spent making lindens in SL, or simply playing Counterstrike. I am not saying eve is a bad game, on the contrary I think its quite good. Its just not my cup of tea. But then most MMO's are not. Ultimately I liked playiung neverwinter nights online bette than WOW or EQ. SWG disppointed and COH ran its course. I even tried guildwars. I am just a sports/flight sim/shooter fan.

From: Jake Reitveld Because ultimately progress involves getting stuff and selling stuff. And that was the aspect I was put off by. Ultimately for my space games, homeworld 2 is more my speed. EVE was a bit like SL-its a game out pretending you have a job, only without the sexy bits. I beg to differ. It really doesn't require you to get involved in buying and selling beyond the very, very basic necessities. Yes. You will need to buy a ship. And a loadout for it. Yes. You will need to purchase your initial skill training. If you don't engage in trading the stuff you pick up along the way, say from missions, loot or whatever, then you can just as easily reprocess it, and then once in a while cash in your raw materials. That's not rocket science and doesnt take more than a few minutes once a month! That's as deep as you need go. Really. And that assumes you're fairly autonomous. If you play as part of a corp, you may well have a very specific role which involves none of the above. Hell, you can be a corporate accountant in EVE! You don't even need a ship for that It is a DEEP game. As deep as you want it to be. In fact I don't know that anyone could truly engage in all the possible aspects of even the economy. It's vast. But conversely, you can stay happily away from all of that, too! I think a lot of this kind of attitude stems from seeing how other players accelerate through the game and whizz off on their various career paths, and thinking you somehow have to compete. And yes, if you feel the need to do that you are going to have to dabble in a bit of everything to maximise your efficiency. But really... it doesn't have to be like that. Just like SL doesn't have to be a chore or a job. You can just take a leisurely stroll through EVE and enjoy it. You just have to get it out of your head that you're competing with the rest of the galaxy. Your pace is your own. How you play the game is up to you. But you aren't forced to do anything. It's a lot like SL, really, in that its a persistent environment *. Don't try to 'win' it! Just enjoy it! I think - as is clear from these two concurrent EVE threads - that it's something you'll either love or hate. You'll either get it or you won't. A lot like SL, really By the way, I have to say I rolled my eyes a bit reading an earlier post where someone said they used a macro to mine ore while they were at work... and now had basically 'won' the game and was bored... well... duh! If you're gonna use cheats, don't complain that the game didn't meet your expectations! * No, it's not necessary for you to post to point out that I'm always calling SL a game.

I just got it, having a good time with it so far. The tutorial was very well done, and now i'm just running missions and waiting for my skill to get up enough so I can use a better ship.
Character name is Jerian.

I'm pretty sure this has been posted before in this forum, but I couldn't find the original thread. It's such a great story. I really hate the author for what he did, but I love him for telling it so well. It's a must read for anyone considering Eve Online. http://static.circa1984.com/the-big-scam.htmlP.S. Great meeting you at SLCC, Cybin!

I have so far learned that while you *can* play both EVE and SL at the same time on one computer, all the text and windows in EVE magically disappear. Oh well...

Great meeting you at SLCC, Cybin! That story is brilliant. It reminded me of my roommate in college who, a year before becoming my roommate, set up this almost scam (almost scam? I guess it really was a scam, hehe) where he sold off his old Magic the Gathering cards in EBay back when EBay was a little more frontier-like. He never outright lied, but he specifically chose words with very misleading connotations. He divided up his collection into smaller sets, but he worded the ad so that if you weren't reading carefully you could think you were going to get all these really rare Revised cards-- but in actuality they were all in the main pool he drew from and each small set he sold only had one or two among many cheap cards. Most of his sales went without a hitch, Ebay was more of a no-man's land then so people seemed to have more tolerance for miscommunication. But there was one guy who was just furious, he used to call him all hours of the night. But he didn't care. He thought it was funny and he hated his gigantic roommate at the time who got so drunk that he shit his bed in his sleep and a stench of beef ALWAYS came in his wake, kind of a BigMac tractro beam to draw in the skanky drunk sorority types, I guess. So he figured, who cares if the guy calls?" He moved out of that room in a few months anyway.

You can reset the tutorial. Start game up, hit esc, settings will come up and it's on the generic tab I think or somesuch. Plus from your com panel you can hit the life preserver thingie for help and bring up the tutorials from there. You'll need to be at your home base to do this I think. You did set a home base, didja??
