i've downloaded the client, read some info, watched a couple of in-game vids and... it looks incredible!
BUT.. i'm already paying for SL and CoH.. so, now i'm trying to decide if i should give EVE a try.
any SLers out there play this game? what can you tell me about it? is it neigh impossible to navigate this game? (some of those screens looked pretty detailed with loads of information)
basically, what do i not know that i should?
i'd be very interested to hear any info anyone can offer. good, bad, neutral.. just the most robust over-all mental picture i can possibly get of this game.
thanks in advance.

Siobhan Taylor and Kris Ritter do. They like to fight about the size of their "thing" I want to try something new, but I am not good at games that involve any kind of combat! I am not sure that the servers for the UK and the US are the same, but its worth askin!

I went over to EVE.... great graphics but I didn’t like it much I hopped in my space ship and took, the part I didn’t like was it was to hard to navigate. I looked around and thought ok now what and could not really do much so that was it for me lol I would go back to try again I think because the graphics where very nice, I just don’t have time right now but will soon.

Based on mention here, I too dowloaded this and purchased an starter subscription. I never made it through the tutorial which is comprehensive and complicated and can take 4 to 6 hours to complete.
That said, the game looks quite interesting but certainly appeals to the strategic, resource marshalling type player. Warcraft 3 or Homeworld are games that I am familiar with that are of the same genre. If you like those, you may find EVE to be bliss.

Sio's thing is so much bigger *pouts* Willow, yes, of course there is combat but it's not like you have to actively and manually control everything with a huge array of controls. you lock your target and hit fire on whatever weapon you wanna use while your ship autopilots itself. Or use drones to fight for you and just watch from a distance. Even you could cope. Honest Yes, Tranquility is the only server. I play with some US SLers on EVE too. It IS overwhelming though. There is just such a sheer amount of possibilities that it just boggles the mind at times. I originally resolved to be an explorer, but decided it'd prolly take a couple of years in real time to visit the whole galaxy It is SUCH a beautiful looking game. I'm sure you've all seen oodles of screenshots, but if ya wanna see mine, they're here .

Thanks for the tip, CalvinRichard. From http://myeve.eve-online.com/buddy/ : Buddy Program The Buddy Program is for current EVE Online subscribers that want to enable their friends to try out EVE Online without any obligations. By clicking on the link below you can send your buddies a free 14-Day Access Pass and have them join you online.
No Hassle Guarantee This is a no-hassle access pass, which means your friends will NOT have to enter any credit card information to start playing. The only thing they need is to download the game and use the access key they will receive. CCP does not harvest any email addresses so your friends will never receive unsolicited e-mail. Having just sent one out (Hope you enjoy, Cybin) I was surprised that it was followed by "send another?" so if there is some limit on buddies, it is greater than one. Invites available first come-first served to MyAv.Name at gmail (until EVE cuts me off, that is, if they do). And no, I'm ain't gonna do anything with your e-mail address either except send you an EVE invite.

I just re-downloaded the client too. My pilot name is Lordfly Digeridoo (maybe that's one word). I'll probably usually play during my downtimes between classes on my laptop. Send me a message! LF

Yes, you can get it here. Subject to it being allowed to remain of course. Remember, technically it's a rival time-vampire and LL may decide we shouldn't be posting links to it.

I was considering playing EVE online since at SOP3 it was announced that EVE beat SL to adding HTML to their client.

Nah, they wouldn't do that... After all, this is Second Life, not ActiveCensorship(tm).

Couple of stand-alone games I used to play in the past, you were never able to "get out" of the spaceship and move around - and therefore couldn't explore the planets or stations you visited. That sort of killed it for me. What about EVE? Is your POV and action purely locked to your ship? Or are you a separate entity with the ability to visit surfaces?

As you describe in the first paragraph. You are your ship. Til it gets blown up. Then you are a little egg shaped lifepod. Til it gets blown up... then you start back wherever your non-existent avatar clone is stored with a noob ship. But that's not a criticism! It works in the context. You have to understand how big EVE is: it is a complete galaxy. With thousands upon thousands of stars. Most with multiple planets. Most of those with multiple moons. Many of those having stations to dock at. It is indescribably vast. I really don't know the stats - I'm sure they're somewhere online, but believe me it's... BIG. I think thats why you can't get out and explore!

I tried eve. it is beautiful.
the learning curve is very steep, and the tutorials are somewhat helpful but not entirely illuminating. Its also harder to get involved with the game on a socio-ploitical level. There are, with in eve, so very sophisticated politics going on. If you know someone who can walk you through it.
Combat is very simple. This was disappointing to me, as gatheing resources and combining stuff to sell it on a market is about the least interesting thing in the world to me. I find the whole not ion of tradeskills silly in fantasy games, and eve is a gmae that is really about tradeskills. Personally I would have liked combat to be a bit more sophisticated, and for them to have a path of progression along a military curve.
But it isn't so and eve is mostly a economics game tha tis beautifully rendered, and if you like that sort of thing, wonderfully sophisticated. I'll stick to second life though, because I like hot female avi's in prim heels.

I'm totally drooling after reading all these opinions about Eve* and will be trying this out when I get home today. I'm a sucker for number crunching and tradeskills, so this may be right up my alley...thanks so much for all the information about it!
Taco
* I was drooling before I even got online today, technically; I am, however _still_ drooling after reading these opinions.

Yes it has an economy, but you absolutely don't have to get involved in it at all, save for buying your ships and equipment. As it happens, I enjoy some of the trade aspect, and know how to exploit it to make a fast buck, so I'm obviously gunna And as for a military career path... you can do what you like in EVE! Why didnt you join a security force or military corp? Or become a bounty hunter? Or a pirate if you think you're hard enough? It's totally open ended. There ARE storylines, which are optional, but they are entirely dependent upon what kind of career path you carve out for yourself, who you align yourself with, and what sort of actions you perform.

It looks like a great looking game, but between work, SL, WoW and The Matrix Online I just just really wouldn't have the time to play it.
