If I had a child I would do everything I could to try and save it with out having to kill another child, abortion is murder. I would search far and wide and offer million $$ in payment for anyone to come forward with compatible bone marrow. Do you know in some phillipino countries they sell one of their kidney's for around $200USD? I would go there and offer thousands more to test other people in search of compatible bone marrow. Did you know that the success rate of a bone marrow transplant is noteven 60%? Usually people recieving a bone marrow transplant die before they can heal.

source please.

Oh, and while your at it, you know if you offer a $1 million for someone to come forward, you'd better have the money.

(it's also illegal to sell your body parts, at least in the US)

debating it with her is rather pointless, she doesn't have children of her own and has never had to make these kind of decisions. I would suggest she watch "John Q" with Denzel Washington

But trolls r teh kewt!

chances of embryo testing are so inaccurate it isn't funny. 50/50 pretty much and they've often said that they test positive for it and then eventually when the child is born, they were wrong and test negative.

Source please?

I'm a registered nurse in my first life. Consider who you're debating with before entering the debate.

I have never been pregnant nor do I have children (I suppose that statement is a bit redundant) but I would not hesitate to try and conceive a child to save another.

More to love!

Also, Jessy, you have taken this so off topic it's ridiculous. Your need to turn this into an abortion discussion is kind of annoying.

The parents plan a prenatal test to make the determination and will terminate the pregnancy if the tissues are incompatible.

pretty sure abortion was part of the discussion

Jessy, I am just going to tell you up front. I am willing to take a life to save some, I've done it before and I'll do it again, ESPECIALLY for my own children. So your "abortion is murder" routine is irrelevent to me.

Anyone that goes to a third world country and offers money to buy people's organs (therefore taking adavntage of their poverty, desperation and need) makes me sick...

you got anything more current than 1992? I'm also not seeing where you come up with less than 60% success rate...

to those who think you would have an abortion then you are sick in the head, how can you look at these pictures and still say you are human.

Abortion does not need to factor in.

http://bmj.bmjjournals.com/cgi/content/full/321/7266/918/f

As to the poll I can't vote in it. I can not judge other people's actions when I don't know what suffering they are going through or what is in their hearts.

I would like to bring up this article again, because the assumed technique of getting pregnant and then aborting if the fetus does not make a good match is becoming an outdated ethical issue.

The Nashes used a technique called preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD). The embryos (several dozen in their case over several tries) were conceived in vitro, and then tested for a match, and only the ones that provided a match were then implanted.

IVF almost always involves the creation of multiple embryos, failure of implantation of some, and destruction of extras. For this to be a serious ethical debate about the future of fertility and medical practice, I think you'll need to look at this option. Or do you consider even every egg and sperm to be sacred?

Now-

Assuming the case in the original post, I would have to say given this option (PGD) I find the case unethical. If you are deliberately beginning a pregancy, to then abort a perfectly healthy potential child simply because it doesn't meet some particular test is barbaric. It makes it sound like the child's only purpose is to save another's life, and wouldn't be loved otherwise.

If you really desperately need to debate abortion, start a new thread. It's already been pointed out a couple of times that abortion does not need to factor in on this issue. Invitro technology has changed that.

The moral question posed was, is it ok to bring a child into the world for the sole purpose of saving another child?

Again I will not attempt to judge what is in the hearts of others. For myself, as much as I love my own children now, I can't imagine loving another any less no matter why or how it was concieved.

Sidenote: And no I did not even open your links, I know what is there, I've seen it before. I will not get into personal issues about whether I or anyone I know has or hasn't had an abortion but I would NEVER be so judgemental as to tell someone who has or is considering it that they are "sick in the head" or less than human. You can not know what another person lives with, deals with, thinks and feels, therefore it is not your place to judge them.

I find it to be a disturbing reason for having a child. Like having a kid for spare parts.

The idea that you would abort the child if it's not a match I find reprehensible and morally corrupt

OTOH, parents decide to have another kid because the first needs a playmate or they'll keep having babies until they have both sons and daughters. Having another baby to save an older child hardly seems less ethical than having a baby so your first kid has someone to play Monopoly with.

Mixed feelings on the abortion part. Ultimately, it's not my business. But on the other side, if you *intentionally* get pregnant, seems odd that you would then get yourself intentionally unpregnant. I have a hard time believing this happens much in the West? (I understand it does, though, in places like China, where there's a one-child policy, or in India, where sons are considered to be much more desirable. But if that info is off, someone please let me know).

When you're the parent presented with the need to find a bone marrow donor, your perspective changes because the life of a person you love very much hangs in the balance.

We can say what we want here, but when it's us in the picture, I'm not sure what any of us are going to think.

If one of my girls were to - and goddess, I shudder at even TYPING this - develop leukemia or another disease that required bone marrow transplant, I would conceive another child...

...and I would love that child as fiercely and deeply as I do the others, rather than viewing him or her as a means to an end.

Jessy,

The teen grid is callllling.
