Yep. Radeon 9000 series card. The system's incredibly fast and can do anything, except SL. I was having this issue before the 1.10 tho. I would walk away from usin the machine and then come back to a blank desktop, and everyone would still see me logged in (Had to log in to log out, ye haw). Some nights were better than others. Never gave me very long, tho. Probably an hour or so. Now.... 10 seconds, 15 seconds... I even crashed while it was still logging on once. Going to go buy an NVidia card tomorrow. That seems to be a plausible if costly solution, since from what I can see LL's not "on top of" this problem... or does anyone know otherwise? ***** EDIT ***** On a guess... I just up and uninstalled SL. Uninstalled from the control panel, made sure every single folder was gone. Downloaded 1.10.0.34 and installed. Have been up for half an hour and only one crash, which allowed me a crash report (haven't gotten one before)... I don't make promises, but if someone else out there is bold and wants to see if it helps them too?

From: Neurosis Darkes I have The ATI MOBILITY RADEON(9700) as well. And Im running XP 64. Have you upgraded to CATALYST 6.5? I know your not sposed to use the ATI one your sposed to use YOUR MANUFACTURERS.. yea well fuck that. Uninstall your MANUFACTURERS ATI DRIVERS FULLY then reboot and use DriverCleaner for all ATI presets.... Then reboot again and try and install the REGULAR DESKTOP ATI CATALYST 6.5 ... It will fail... but it made c:\ati ... this is good... use DHMODTOOL (driverheaven.net) to mod the files in there to MOBILITY drivers.... install them and you may get one error during install.. ignore this... install both the driver and the catalyst INSTALL will succeed this time... reboot.... wait.. wait...wait... catalyst is setting itself up in the BG... DONT DO ANYTHING... until you see the ATI CATALYST in the systray.... then (since you are @ 640x480 now and everything is hugomongous) right click the systray ati icon and tell it to set desktop to max (mine is 1280x800)... now uninstall SL 1.9 if u never did... the install the fresh 1.10.... now... try it.. should be ok... I usually kill explorer.exe and run blackbox.exe for my UI in XP (yes even in xp64)... but sometimes for games I kill blackbox.exe and run the game from the ctrl-alt-del windows "START NEW TASK" so that way next to nothing is running... I was ranting and crying about the driver issue being bullshit... its not and I have apologized... this is how i fixed it right here. ALSO... I have had alot of problems before this w/ AMD's COOLnQUIET crap on this laptop... I use RMCLOCK to lock in 8x @ 1.3V and my pc flies with all its 64bit goodness.... anything higher than 8x reboots the machine so.. i think thats a problem with dirty ventilation (i smoke....ALOT)... either that or my laptops well known north bridge problems are fucking me over... but thats not the point... upgrade to REAL ATI CATALYST 6.5 ... worked for me on my very similar laptop... If you tell me you have a UNIWILL 258KA5 i will crap myself btw.... Wow this is a very long paragraph.... I did everything you said but sl does not accepts, (i tried version6.5 and 6.3catalyst) i also try omega 6.3 and one more vesion, Dhzer0point.6.4 and 6.3 received messages like this; Sldoes not accepts them Unsupported Graphics Card If you are receiving this message, your graphics card may not be compatible with Second Life. Attempting to use Second Life with your current system configuration may cause the program to crash or become unresponsive. Minimum system requirements are listed on the Second Life Support web site: http://secondlife.com/support/ If you are using a supported video card, contact the manufacturer to obtain video driver updates. Video driver updates for ATI and Nvidia graphics products are available for download from the following web sites: http://www.ati.com/http://www.nvidia.com/ Finally, try setting your display to "True Color (32-bit)" under Control Panels, Display before running Second Life.

Dont know if this will help - am still testing it to see how long it works.
I edited the user settings and dropped the clip distance to 32 ( lowest you can get in the client is 64 )
I was able to login and MOVE ( slow - but working ) - That was with all other settings set to normal ( avatar detail, object details etc )
Called it quits for a night and loaded up 1.10.0.34 this morning and with the 32 setting I was moving ( and fast ) - but crashed when attempting to edit a jevn ( silly me )
Will continue along these lines to see if I can get a manual list of user settings that work for a reasonable period of time, and which rendering settings I can disable ( via the debug menu ) to make things more stable.
( Anyone got a list of setting I can change from command line - its a pain having to go to the debug menu and set it up again before every test )

I recommend TEch's look at runaway scripts here.. seems my inventory is constantly trying to reload and does not stop.. also had a freakish incident when zoning. I just kept on faling and falling and falling .. and.. well you get the picture. this is php... it's glitchy at best,, look for wrong paths and such.

Am on XP ( dont know if it is different elsewhere )
Under your user name there is a folder ( hidden ) "application data" Under that second life under that user settings
I am editing the file "user settings" in the directory "user settings"
Do not change the other files and keep a copy of your original.
In the file you will see a lot of the settings that you see under preferences. ( Some work - some give weird results - some crash )
When you load the SL client do not go into preferences as this will overwrite the file you have just changed.
Clip distance is near the bottom somewhere.
If you mess it up and SL doesnt load - put back your original - load SL client - go into preferences, change one setting and use apply ( this saves them back to the file )
Hope it helps ( am sure LL will say they dont support this method - but if I wait for an answer from the Lab I will still be waiting this time next year - this way if I can prove which settings are borking it I can go to the Lab with conclusive data )

From: Torley Linden Hi everyone--just wanted to post in here and let you know you're not being ignored. Crashing is damn frustrating; it's happened to me too!
I don't know if all the crashes reported here are because of the same cause, but it's good to see you discuss things amongst yourselves.
Please, do continue to send in crash reports. And those of you who aren't, if you don't get the Crash Reporter box upon crashing, turn it on in EDIT menu > PREFERENCES > GENERAL > CRASH REPORTS should be "Always Send".
I am going to let our Lindens in Quality Assurance know about this thread to check what else we know.
We do care very much and endeavor to understand this better so we can help you--it's not the first time something like this has happened! LOL. Always send. Even if you set it to never send it's still gonna bug you every time. How about fixing THAT?

From: Hok Wakawaka This new update does nothing for the crashing problem Actually if you look at what happened before vs. what happens now, you'll see that they did fix SOMETHING. The symptoms have changed ever so slightly. Before: Bandwidth and Packet Loss would spike just before you crashed. The Bandwidth Limiter had no effect. After: Bandwidth Limiter works again. No Bandwidth and Packet Loss spikes. IT JUST CRASHES. And usually while sitting idle in a quite place. Now for the interesting part... Since I have quite a few computers that can run SL and also quite a few ALTs, I ran an experiment. I left 2 AVs on all night. Woke up and they were still on. Turned on another computer and logged in a 3rd ALT this morning and 1 of the other 2 dropped off with in seconds. So question one is how many computers are in game on your connection when you crash? Another interesting thing... In last night's testing I noticed more than once that when I crash, at least twice but probably more, my router rebooted. A while back a friend told me she had to replace her router because she kept crashing. I thought that she was wrong but her new router solved the problem. Both my router and her old one are Netgear. So question two is What kind of router are YOU using? Question three is Does your router reboot or do anything odd just before the crash? The best part is after this happens the Macs get the spinning beach ball of death meaning you have to force quit the app. Assuming of course that you're not full screen so you can. The PC on the other hand just silently drops connection without telling you. (The Mac did this too in 1.9) THANKS! Question one for the Lindens would is really be too much trouble to DETECT A DISCONNECT and TELL US THAT WE'VE LOST CONNECTION? It's not rocket science. As I've stated before. These problems can not be found or fixed if your sitting inside Linden Labs and connected to the network. The only way you will find and correct these is to get some DSL or Cable connections to test on and to actually USE THEM in your testing. Question two for the Lindens Do you need some help?

Well, as for question one: I am only on one PC, not using multiple accouts and machines.
Question two: My router does not reboot.
At two different events last night people were crashing constantly and having to relog, so I don't think its just us.

I agree with that - 1.10.34 is handling incoming a lot better - they changed something ( funny it wasnt mentioned in the release notes ) The rooter etc stuff - I am testing on single line using an ethernet connection with one user. I think it may be several things that on their own will not cause problems that are gathering together to cause a big problem somewhere else. For example Packet queueing - not a major biggy on its own Graphic queueing - no biggy Inv upload ( mine is huge ) - again no big thing Occlusion culling - the system wil get to it eventually Sims sending more data - drop in fps Add them all together and triggered at the same time and certain machines are just saying WTF and going bye bye.

There was definitely a fix on data limiting. Before mine was staying high yellow and red. But it may have been more then just the amount of bandwidth that had been disabled in 1.10.32. When I was in the game and it was working then SL was the most beautiful I had ever seen it. Absolutely stunning. Now 1.10.34 is much more stable, only crashed once last night but nothing looks the same. I live up in the air and my god the difference. I kinda think the redraw and other limits weren't working either. Now everything past the limit I imposed of 150 meters is just kinda ugly. Which is fine because I can play now. BUt yeah it definitely makes me want to go out and get a bigger power supply and two lower end nvidia cards to work in tandem. I've seen what the game can be and it takes my breath away.
I so hope everyone slowly gets back up and comes back to play.

Since downloading the newest version I can't even get the login screen up. It tryes to start SL but gives a crash report 5-10 seconds after trying. I've never had this kind of problems and the funny thing is that my workmate has exactly the same laptop as me, bought 1 week after each other and he has no problems what so ever.
I've uninstalled everything a couple of times, will look at the drives now. Most of all I feel sorry for all the people who don't have the technical knowledge to do these kind of things..

Courtney,
THey have a free product online called believe or not "Crap Cleaner". Do a google search for it. Install it and uninstall SL with it then click on tools and clean your registry. After that then do another install.
After installing or if you have problems during install right click your task bar and start task manager and make sure an instance of Second Life is not running. If it is then end the process.
After all that then try starting Second Life again. Hope this helps. Can't think of much else.

OK this has got to be the bizzarest thing i will ever say
I turned down the network connection as far as it would go - 50 ( 1g cache still tho )
( expecting to swim in sludge )
It was the longest i managed to stay in ( I actually logged out manually ) Managed to edit a vendor Fire up a jevn menu Teleport
and was moving with near normal speed ( graphics still set at the lowest settings )
Gonna call it a night and try it again in the morning and see it is was the setting or the time of day that caused the change.
Will post findings...

Call me crazy.. but this is working for me..
05-27-2006 19:56
I log in and out at Bad Girls.. in the rez area.. it and the Bare@Rose ..seem to do something (tightens the throtle or something? according to the debuger im running when i log in).. these areas are the only place i seem to be able to get in and stay for longer than 2 minutes..
U all are saying oh yeah.. a more populated area..shes nuts.. but I swear it works some times better than others.. then beware if you travel to an area with only one other person there ..cuz CRASH..
and hey this is a whole lot better than pulling out anymore hair..or putting the keyboard thru the monitor??
Muah and best of luck to all. pucci Mission

Up and running now

I completely uninstalled SL, deleted everything about it from my PC. Downloaded a fresh copy, installed it. I also updated Catalyst to 6.5 and my .NET along with it (before reinstalling SL).
I posted last night I had crashed once in the hour since installing it. Now, 15+ hours of actual SLing (yeah I know I am here too much), and not a single crash. I even tried using the "multiple login" function for an hour just to see and I haven't even experienced as much lag as I was in 1.9 and no more crashes.
It really did the job for me. No more SL just "vanishing" off my screen like an occluded prim (well yes I still have that but at least I am logged in to see it!) Anyone else having the vanishing SL act brave enough to try, or am I alone in getting my system to work?

When I set my SL properties to run on 640x480 it runs the program wihtout any problems. But as soon as I want to run it in my normal screen resolution mode it stops working..
