Am i missing something here????????? Learning to Host is a education event?
LLabs is paying for this stuff? Its a class being helded on TeaZer Isle

I sure hope this is not real!?
In my days you learned the hard way........But paying to hold this kind of education event?????????? Its worry some!

Technically anything that has intent to teach and further someone's second life is educational.

TeaZers unfortunately seems to have recognized that LL pays for Educational events, and has thus assaulted the event listing with some of the most low-brow unintelligible educational events ranging from the incredibly stupid "How to use permissions" to "How to make your own bling (not to script it mind you, but just to be able to drop a freebie script into items)" and the mildly plausible and useful building 101. From what i've heard, the Teachers generally know very little about the subjects at hand and often times don't show up to the events at all.

c'est la deuxième vie

Usagi, I really don't see what the problem is... Why is Building 101 any better than Events 101? Surely different people enjoy different things, and may want to spent their Second Life doing them. Whether that is building things or hosting events is their decision, why shouldn't someone be allowed to teach them how as a Linden event?

From the Volenteer: Instructor part of the website:

From: someone

Classes should focus on helping people get more out of Second Life, whether that is building, texturing, scripting, running businesses, particles, or just about anything Second Life related. Linden Lab currently supports a wide range of events where Residents share their knowledge to help other Residents make the most of their Second Life.

The Lindens don't seem to have a problem with it, and it would most probably qualify for support.

What makes this event such a big deal?

You know I never said I was a expert Love :) Nor did i ever say I would run classes like this. What I did saw SAY I do help those that ask me about how to host and i do it for free...........Enough said..........

No you havent said you where an expert with so many words , however you have made it abundantly clear in almost all your posts in this thread that you feel that you know how event hosting should be done (=expert) and since you had to learn the hard was , in the field , nobody else should be given the opportunity to learn at least some tips and tricks in a controlled environment (class).

Is the instructor who gives these classes doing you wrong?
Are you missing out on something because these classes are held? (If so then you may just want to go to one of these classes so you dont miss out)
If you feel these classes are a waste of (your) time , then why bother posting about it on the forums , wouldn't it make more sense to simply ignore it then?

As mentioned before in this thread , LL will only pay if at least 5 people attend the class.
Nobody is taking anything from you by hosting (or attending) this class. Well other then catching up in your skill and maybe surpassing you in skill because they just might learn that one trick you didn't know.

There is no reason why people would need to reinvent the wheel every time when there are instructors like this willing to share their knowledge. Part of hosting can be learned. Especially the part you seem to deem so important (dealing with griefers).

How to deal with incooperative people (ok I tried to say griefers nicely :P) is something that can be taught , as a good example most customer support jobs in RL will train their staff on how to deal with this type of people. This is not necessarily a skill a person has from birth.
Sure some people do , but it _can_ be taught.

As such this class does have value.

Again if you feel this class does not have value , simply ignore it. But don't just take cheap shots with unfounded and imaginary evidence that only really exists in your mind (your point of view).

Ok enough ranting from me now , have fun , take care.

[...]the incredibly stupid "How to use permissions"

That actually sounds like a great class. If SL permissions were as intuitive as you seem to think, we wouldn't have constant debates over what "Transfer" permissions mean, and the Building forum wouldn't need a sticky for a "Permissions Explained" FAQ.

Well you should start a discussion like that. This class was how to click the boxes to turn them on or off. Basically "How to click on a box"

Permissions classes can be very useful. People don't understand what happens to objects inside objects, scripts, textures etc. It can be very confusing and there generally isn't enough time in an hour Building 101 class to fit in everything about permissions.

I've met users at least a year old who still have lots of questions about permissions.

Its not about how to click a box, its about the consiquences of clicking that box ;) .

Walking can also be very useful. Perhaps I'll conduct a class on how to walk. Actually I think TeaZers beat me to that.....seriously.

I'm not saying TeaZers should stop or that someone doesn't learn something there, i'm just saying that the classes are often exceptionally simplistic, things you can learn from 10 seconds of exploration or reading a notecard, or exceptionally stupid, like how to make your own bling (Here's an item. Here's a script. Drop the script in. Class dismissed!). It's quite obviously a ploy to make money off of LL's educational fundings.

The bling class thing I completely agree with, although I've never been to a Teasers class myself. The permissions thing just got me because I stumbled around permissions for a long time, I know lots of people who still haven't got their head around them and we get A LOT of live help calls about them.

Ah, but for a beginner, the classes may not be simplistic. I've taken a number of classes at TeaZers -- several when I was a noob. "Pimp Cane", "Blinging Belt", "Waterfall" ... But, they were fun and allowed me to learn building concepts. I didn't know how to copy prims, I didn't know how to link prims together, I didn't know how to fit a prim (in this case, a belt) to my avi, I didn't know how to add scripts to objects, I didn't know what phantom was -- this was all new to me. Gee oh man, I was so proud of that pimp cane -- I boxed it up (a skill I also learned at Teazers) and gave it to my friends!

I constantly recommend TeaZers to new folks who want to learn how to build. We're not all SL college level -- some of us are in kindergarten and those basic classes help us to become creators in our own right.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED CLASS!!

First off, if you do not host, run an event, or promote for an event, you have no business even having an opinion here.

Secondly, 95% of the hosts in-world NEED SERIOUS TRAINING!!! Most events suck... to the point where they probably don't even need a host.

To run a successful event, you need to
plan the event,
promote the event,
get the people there,
make sure they have a good time,
keep people there,
make sure people donate/tip (because now, that is the ONLY way LL has provided for performers, venues, and events to make money)
build a friends list,
build a group,
network,
and stay upfront to create new ideas to one-up the competition.

Do you still feel all of that above does not have merrit to be taught?

P.S. Teazers - If you'd like me to teach Event Production & Promotion in SL, Id be happy to.

People doing these classes are not really giving the title of host any more repect, infact they are lowering the level.
People always bitch about people running naked or oher less then brain using events. So this is why these types of does not help the rep of people do professional hosting ( tringo, salsa, etc.....

SO why bother and move on and ignore then.Well thats what LLAbs does and look at what we get? Well shutting eyes and playing dun really does little good to improve the system.......Whats next how to walk?

The reason I'm always complaining about the dwell removal and this issue of a class on how to run a successful event are two completely different things.

I don't think this class will be about how to run a cookie-cutter event. It will display the tools on how to make an event, and then it's the individuals job to take if from there.

In RL, there are classes on marketing, there are classes on promotion, there are classes on event planning, and of course, there are classes on how to be a proper host.... Why are there such stong opinions AGAINST teaching this knowledge in SL?

I'm an instructor at TeaZers and it really disappoints me to see a thread like this. LL has always had the policy of paying approved instructors for teaching classes and all those classes are approved by them.
A hosting class like you are talking about is to help people interested in hosting, not sure how to go about it and don't feel they want to be thrown in at the deep end without some good pointers.
I notice you also only mention TeaZers here but, there are other universities around SL who teach this particular class and yes, they get paid by LL to do it.
I also noticed in someone's reply that often TeaZers Instructors do not turn up for class. I can tell you that this is a rarity and TeaZers has a 2 strike policy. If Instructors didn't turn up on a regular basis TeaZers would no longer employ them, simple as that.
All I can suggest is that you take the class to see how valid it is to someone new to SL or new to hosting before complaining about it as a posted event

several points to make
1.) I taught a course exactly on this at a club that wanted to improve the quality of the hosts before I became an instructor at TeaZers. The club wanted it and paid me for it.

2.) I also taught a course, for the club, on skills needed to be a sucessful dancer at a club.

3.) I have taught classes for 5 months now, but the first one I taught I was less than one month old for.

4.)Experience. These are my qualifications in RL as well as my sl qualifications
a. 40 years old, lots of life experience
b. Licensed teacher, having taught at levels ranging from 1st grade to post graduate college courses.
c. I hold an Associate of Arts in Math, a Bachelor of Arts in History and in Education, and Master of Arts degrees in Psychology and Mental Health Counseling.
d. Upon entering sl my first job was as a Dancer at Club Vixens. As a Dancer, I averaged $4000L a week in tips. I was rapidly promoted to host, given a 5 minute lesson on how to use the contest boards. and then got in trouble because I didn't have enough people coming to the events. I knew nothing of posting, or hosting then. At the time I left Vixens to teach, I was making only $1000 a week as a host. Working as a dancer, manager, mall manager, host, and building items for the club owner; some classes would have been helpful, but I didn't learn of TeaZers until I was 4 months old in sl.
e. I currently work at TeaZers and also have 3 shops that are bringing in income for me. I am a professor at TeaZers (not instructor) and write classes and help to train people who want to be instructors at TeaZers.

5.) Those who want to teach at TeaZers, have a menotor for thier first few classes, which are generally--but not always--taught at the beginner level. This is so the class is less complex and overall easier to teach. The classes do have content beyond "click the box"

6.) I also do teach a class on how to open/run a business in sl. This class is very well attended (usually 15-25 people). Should they all be required to learn the hard way? I don't think so.

7.) This is not the only thread you have opened attacking TeaZers. Why do you dislike it so? I know of at least 2 other treads, started by you, attacking TeaZers and generally filled with misinformation, poor grammar, and bad spelling. These last two tell me that one of two things is happening at least, either it isn't important enough to answer for you, or you are thinking so little about what you are saying that you do not read it yourself.

also, for those who wish to comment on this post personally. My sl name is Aarlon Montagne, and I am a submissive to Mistress Angel Sachertorte and Mistress Rhiannon Turner. I also am a professor at TeaZers and open to answering questions about the University if they are desired.

Thank Y/you all for reading this whole posting and I do hope that it is informative and most of Y/you find it makes valid points.

Some points I have to raise:

1) The instructor may only have been around since February, but that doesn't mean she developed the class herself: Teazers works with a classes 'pool', where instructors share the classes they develop for others to teach. The avatar may only have been around a few months, but the class itself is based on the combined experience of any instructor who has taught the class before.

2) If this class, and others which Artemis raised, are 'a joke', why do they attract high attendance? LL requires at least 5 students to attend an educational event for it to qualify for payment, and if this wasn't being consistently met then the class might be dropped. A good number of people do attend, however, and this demonstrates that the class is worthwhile.

3) RL experience, as others have mentioned, may give someone an advantage in SL beyond their 'SL age'. I have taught and developed scripting classes before reaching the 2 month mark, because I'm a Computer Science student and so I picked up LSL in a matter of weeks thanks to Java and C++ experience.

There's mention of walking around and reading notecards on how to host events and such, but a person brand new to SL doesn't know that. They don't know to left click the sign to get the notecard. They don't know to NOT click the OK then Save buttons before the notecard has loaded if they have lag, thus collecting a blank notecard. The hosting 101 class is labled "BEG1", Usagi just so you know since it seems you aren't familiar with the abbreviation, "BEG1" means Beginner 1... a very basic entry level course. By no means do I expect anyone to know that, and not everyone does as we do get new residents coming to us looking for the Advance 7 Shoe Making class, yet they've never even created a prim. It's things like that that are described in the description of the event posting: This is a BEGINNER level class for those with little or no experience in Hosting.

Some posts I'd like to clarify on...
From: Allana Dion
*snip*
You said that the class is being taught at Teazers. Well Teazers hires and pays instructors who haven't yet gotten into the LL instructor group. So you don't actually know at this point whether LL has agreed this is a valuable class and is paying the instructor, or if it's just Teazers she works for.
*/snip*

That is correct. We have a program where we pay people out of TU's budget to teach while they wait for their LL Instructor approval.

From: Surreal Farber
*snip*
Maybe Teazers already has the course materials set up.
*/snip*

We do have a lot of material already set up to make new instructors feel more comfortable about teaching their first few classes. We have at least 2 new classes being created for the TU 'pool' of classes every week, as well as individual instructors creating their own classes that do not go into that pool.

From: Usagi Musashi

I will give you a simple answer to why he is attacking teasers, actually multiple choices.

1- Was turned down as an Instructor at TeaZers
2- Was replaced at a hosting job by a TeaZers trained Instructor
3- Runs a school of his own that is trying to compete with TeaZers
4- He is a troll

I am guessing 4 but leaning towards 2 and 1.

I cannot believe I just read through 7 pages based on an argument that has literally no bearing on anyone's SL. If you dont like it, dont attend the classes. If you dont want your money goign to pay instructors. dont buy anything and cancel your premium account.

But wasting anyone's time with a pointless illogical argument is a crime worse than any crime TeaZers commited trying to EDUCATE people.

Who cares what they teach? If people want to learn let them teach. Jesus, go troll the Counterstrike forums or something.

I have been "in the game" for a few months now (I guess I'm still a noob right?) I spent my first few weeks in camping chairs blowing all of my money at casinos and watching the job boards trying to find work. Because that's the only way I knew at the time. No one told me any differently. I mean what better way to find a job than to talk to people and ask where they are working, visit businesses and ask if they're hiring or check the classifieds right? IRL yes, that's what we do, and from reading the posts here it's clear that Usagi has no RL to relate to, maybe he should stop using pose balls and sign off the computer and go out and release those frustrations!!!

My point is, at some point I found TeaZers on the "events" board and attended a class. I was home from work that week, and the first class I attended was teaching me how to organize my Inventory. It was an awesome class! I can't even begin to tell you how many classes I went to that week, I learned how to build, how to find things, how to find a job, and so many other things. TeaZers has made this game a better place for so many new people.

I am now teaching at TeaZers, and loving every minute of it. I'm also still learning as much as I possibly can at the classes being taught there. I teach two classes a day, everyday and I have never had a student act negatively toward what he/she has learned in the classes. All of them have been so appreciative for what we are teaching them and praising us for the help that we are giving them. I've had one student take a class on how to texture furniture who knew nothing at all about even getting the furniture out of her inventory, I walked her through it step by step, gave her that extra time during class. The rest of the class was totally understanding and this student commented and I quote that "I was so upset and frustrated that 20 minutes before this, I was going to quit this game" I think that pretty much says it all!!!!!

TeaZers has helped me tremendously, I've also started a business with what I've learned in just a short time and I know for a fact that I wouldn't be doing as well as I am right now without the help of the patient and helpful staff of Teazers!

My only regret is that I didn't learn about the classes immediately after I joined the game!
