From: Sapphire Bombay Hey Tiger,
A Money Tree is a free object I created to help others to give back to the new users in the community. By owning a money tree, the owner commits to giving their weekly base stipend of L$500 to new users (30 days old or less). If the owner, or someone else, wants to donate to the tree it bears fruit. All of this manifests itself as L$1 bills and fruit that a new user can click on to receive lindens valued between L$1 to L$20. That is very cool! I wish i would have known about that way back when i first started! Doing stuff like this is def. community building!

I just picked up an updated tree, will drop on Tav on Friday. I'm a bit busy finishing the discussion series on Uru.
This may annoy the current round of newbies pruning the tree, but have left a note.
As for why I placed one there - Well, its part to show people that quiet builds exist, part to help out in general. Even had a copy of the Uru Anniversary invite next to it (which were obviously ignored, *sigh*). But I did have one person come up to me and say hi and thanks, so right there was worth it. Another resident of the island has donated a bit as well, he did not know of such a thing until he asked me about it.

The Hong Bao money tree at my place has been quite popular, and I'm happy to provide it, but I'm getting complaints about the music loop. Is there a way to turn it off?
Thanks,

New money tree in Orient! I picked up the money tree because I saw it setup in a build I was working on. I noticed people hanging around it as I worked. Occasionally some people would fly by to see what I was doing. During a break I decided to check it out. After reading about it I decided to make a donation and locate one for my own lot. I setup the tree about a week ago and made a $1000 donation. It's actually quite popular. I've noticed the same 5 - 10 people getting donations from it. Unfortunately no one has stopped by to say hello . I also enjoy watching them fly around the lot. Almost like they don't want to be detected . My main purpose for getting it was to help new people out. I also wanted to get them to my lot to check out what I built. Sadly most visitors come and go quickly.

The loop in mine drove me completly nuts after about an hour ! I found I was able to edit mine and delete the music loop script and the loop itself. Hopefully we'll get an update with an option to turn it off

My money tree in Cortina has been removed due to "Script run-time error" and "Stack-Heap collision." The tree says it is holding $L358 but shows no money, and radius is set at 2.0. It worked fine for several days and was broken when I logged in today.
It will be replaced when fixed or when I get some response from Sapphire.

Just a quick note on ownership. I hear a lot of people mentioning how newbies just swing by and pick from the tree and don't even say Thanks. Remember that is the purpose of the tree. Most newbies might be a bit shy - especially when taking free money (remember your first month?). Say Hi first - ask if they have any questions about SL.
Stormy - I was AFK (as my busy mode response said). The bug was fixed and a new version was released at 4am this morning (when I woke up) - 8 hour turn around from bug report to bug fix. Do remember this is a free object. If you aren't getting the support you desire, I will gladly refund you the purchase price.

My tree stopped rezzing money for the past 24 hours. I took it in and rezzed it out again and it's working properly now again. Anyone else seen this happen ?
I think it's possible that it hit my lands prim limit at one point.

Noob says thanks!
02-18-2005 22:43
Noob says thank you for the money trees!
The Money Trees are encouraging evidence that generousity and kindness exist in SL. I have felt a bit uncomfortable taking money from the trees, but I recognize that getting money is a big part of what SL is about. Without it one can't really particpate in many of the more creative and constructive activities here.
Being a Noob, there isn't yet much else I can to do acquire L$. So starting yesterday I overcame my discomfort and visited all of the trees I could locate using the "find" feature.
I hope this desn't seem too greedy to Y'all. I'm a little puzzled by some of the comments on greedy Noobs. Given the commercial aspects of SL, isn't greed part of what the game is about? Are there "successful" SL gamers who are poor? Most of the trees I visited had only L$2-3 on them. Some had none. A few of the trees either no longer exist or I couldn't find them, but they are still listed in the advertisments.
After two days of hard work, I managed to increase my wealth by about L$100. Half of that came from 2 trees. As you know L$100 doesn't buy much, maybe one decent shirt.
On some of the travels I stumbled across some really cools stuff on SL. This is a great way to encourage Noob to explore. However, when I really started concentrating on collecting money it got pretty boring: teleport, fly high to landmark, search, pluck; repeat, etc., etc.
This has really helped me understand two things about SL:
1. Making money is hard work, even when its free. 2. There has got to be a more interesting way to do it then harvesting Money Trees.
I need to start taking some of the classes on SL. Meanwhile, Money Trees are a resource that I can't ignore.
Thank you again for the Money Trees.

I regret to announce that due to constant and tiring abuse of the money tree at Alua, it has been removed.
This does not mean that I won't support newcomers to secondlife, or that I simply don't care anymore, as right new to where the money tree was, a 1$ store remains and always shall do.
Shame some people out there won't let this generousity help the people it was intended to.

Damien,
Can you elaborate? Keeping in mind that the whole idea is 'to give away money'. If you have specific users you feel are overusing (which is purely subjective, and up to you) the system, you can blacklist them. I'm not trying to be sarcastic. I need to understand what owners consider 'abuse'.

From: Sensual Casanova I am curious to know... how do you know it's being abused? I have one and want to know what to look for.. Basically, there are, or have been, a few players who'll harvest their $25 from a tree (usually from outside the plot if they can), and then teleport straight to the next tree, and so on... I've seen a few on my account list getting L$400-L$500 a week from a single tree. That's basically all of it without donations... If one or two people empty the trees, then there's nothing left for others. However, you can blacklist someone '/5 bl name' either for good or for a few days, to let others get a chance.

I need to understand what owners consider 'abuse'. I've taken mine down as well.. It's the same people over and over, a couple times a day.. if there was something to perhaps limit the users ability to harvest, maybe I would try again, like less than 30 days old, and lifetime harvesting amount would maybe be $50L or so... I'm now just donating to a friend's tree, as well I still have my discount store up.

regarding tree abuse ...
there are 2 features I would like to see added to the tree.
- User can specify the size of the top X list, or at least have it increased to top 10.
- User can specify max number of prims the tree should rez. (perhaps the tree could adjust note/packet denominations accordingly)
And I see no harm in using the blacklist when an abuser is obvious.

How can it be considered abuse....
02-19-2005 12:25
From: Siobhan Taylor Basically, there are, or have been, a few players who'll harvest their $25 from a tree (usually from outside the plot if they can), and then teleport straight to the next tree, and so on...

However, you can blacklist someone '/5 bl name' either for good or for a few days, to let others get a chance. From this thread and others I fear may have unknowingly abused the money trees. If so I apologize. I feel terrible about this, I have only been here 5 days. I have collected about L$100 total, from numerous trees. It took hours of hard work and I'm greatly disturbed to discover that my actions might now be considered a bad thing. I'm confused. The money trees were meant to give away money. If I'm using it within the established limits scripted into the tree, how is it abuse and how would a Noob know anyone considered it abuse. Let me see if I understand this. Your generous spirt lead to you want to give away money to Noobs. You created a tree that will allow any Noob to collect up to $25, and then only if his name isn't on the 3-5 last pickers list. A Noobs have used the trees as they were designed, playing within the rules you created, and now some of you feel resentful that the Noobs did so? You feel that they abused your generousity. Maybe I'm just a dumb Noob and don't understand the value of a L$1. If your intention was to allow people to take only up to $5 at anyone visit, perhaps you should have set up the tree that way. But is L$5 really generous? I haven't found much of anything worth doing or having on SL that costs only L$5. But I will admit that I have not yet visited the L$1 store that I just read about. Also most of the trees I visited had less then L$5 on them. If you give 10 Noob's L$5 each. Have you really done any of them any good. If one Noob works hard visiting many trees and manages to collect L$50, he might actually be able to do something with that. Is that not what you intended? It cost me L$25 each to give a positive rating to two people who were helpful to me. I had to work hard to make up that L$50 from money trees. I feel terrible to think I might have abused this, when thought I was playing by the rules. I'm sorry. Sincerely, ArchTx 5 days old

I dont think you did anything wrong... which is why I asked Damian what he considered "abuse" ... You are right, if the trees were limited to say... $5 a person, that doesn't do much good to anyone does it? I don't think you did anything wrong and I hope that some of the negativity posted in this thread has not discouraged you... you are more than welcome to visit my money tree, and I am sure there are many others that have no problem with what you are doing... Welcome to SL hun

ArchTx Edo afaic you are completely without blame, you have no reason to feel bad ! But there are one or two names who appear way to often and deny people like you the money you could have. And my prim limit request was to enable people like me who only leave a 100 prims spare at any time some headroom especially after some kind person donates to the tree.

further i think having the ability to increase the size of the return list is less mean than using the blacklist. I always feel bad adding a name to the blacklist but a couple of times i've felt I had to in order to protect the tree from greedy pickers. By this i dont mean someone who comes along and picks all the money in the tree, that is OK, but someone who comes several times a day and picks all the money in the tree is not cool !

I appreciate the clarification.

Thanks to Sensual Casanova and Laukosargas Svarog for your supportive comments and clarifications. It is usually the case that 95% of the people behave reasonably, its the other 5% that usually cause all of the problems.
