From: Jonas Pierterson Not anymore, but I will be looking at legal action if I am not removed. I have -alot- of time on my hands while I heal. Small claims court - distress and intentional infliction of emotional duress. Should he not remove my information, it will be filed. "Your honor, I would like to file a complaint against the anonymous avatar --" "...what?" "Well, you see, he's scanning my anonymous avatar with his anonymous avatar" "...get out of my courtroom."

I don't do anything in SL I'd be ashamed of, so this doesn't really matter to me, you have to wonder what the people freaking out about it so badly have to hide.

From: Lordfly Digeridoo And of course, this is a fad that will soon fade away, like everything else does in SL.
You are all making much ado about nothing. I sincerly hope you are right on this one, that it will fade away. The reaction isn't against the info itself that is gatherd, it is the method it is gatherd by, simply put that it is an opt-out system and not an opt-in.

Nothing, the information is void, absolutly not the point of my inital post the point is that it is an opt-out system and not an opt-in.

From: Maeve Morgan I don't do anything in SL I'd be ashamed of, so this doesn't really matter to me, you have to wonder what the people freaking out about it so badly have to hide. There doesn't need to be anything to hide. There doesn't need to be a 'serious reason'. There only has to be a 'I don't feel like being kept track of' and that should be enough. How about we return the favor and make assumptions about you -- Why do you want to know? What are you trying to do to these people? What's *your* secret? Really, both sides of this thread are insane. I don't like the site due to the behavior of the person running it, more than anything else -- the really invasive things I can think of he'll never have the populairty to pull off. This site will go out with a wimper and life goes on.

yep, alot of ppl are getting really overworked over something that will eventually die off... course its gonna take alot longer now that theres been so much publicity over it, but whatever, thats why these forums exist (not to get overworked, but to speak your mind about stuff in SL)

Let this be a lesson to future data aggregators: do not tell people what you are doing.
Ignorance is bliss.

From: Jonas Pierterson Not anymore, but I will be looking at legal action if I am not removed. I *sincerely* hope someone does take this to court. Not because I think there's anything wrong with SLStats (I don't, and I think the case will dismissed in short order), but primarily because I would just love to be able to point to an objective LEGAL ruling. Somebody with the money and guts to hire a lawyer *please* do it? And if the attorney tells you it's not even worth going to court over, please post that instead?

From: Lordfly Digeridoo I'm still missing the "OMG SPYING" with the information given. Just looking at the profile of a random person(with a watch) I could tell he had been at Bad Girls for 1 hr and everyone who had been there the same time. He had a watch so he opted in, but not everyone on his "closest friends" list had Opted-IN. But what ya'll are IGNORING is the lack of Opt-IN only. How many of these things do we have to Opt-OUT of as SL grows? 1 10 100 1000 10,000? At what point do we say Opt-OUT isn't a suitable privacy policy? How long is it acceptable to collect and display personal info on a person without their knowledge or consent?

Opt-in
08-05-2006 15:40
Previous post no longer relevant.SLStats is opt-in only. If you'd like to use it you can, everybody else can have piece of mind.

Live Help said AR you, I did. I belive live help wouldn't tell me to AR if it wasn't a violation... I'll also be suing in small claims court against your website if you do not remove me forthwith.

From: Mark Barrett All the feedback I'm getting on this is good feedback. I look past the threats for legal action, insults, and similar behavior and look for things people really care about. Pretty easy to be all good if you ignore negative feedback.

I've got plenty of time and small claims court doesn't require lawyers.

From: Mark Barrett I don't know. But I don't believe in "if you have nothing to hide, you have nothing to worry about". At least we have some agreement. From: Mark Barrett I got, like, nothing done today. I need a PR person. Here's some free PR advice. Lose the skulls, ask the question once. The perception I had of the box was a childish 'You're so lame for not wanting in on this'. Honestly, I didn't even care to opt-out and I likely would have canceled if the claims I heard weren't true. I only opted out entirely out of spite after I confirmed you really were asking those kinds of questions. Otherwise, I got nothin'.

From: Mark Barrett In a way, the reactions I get from people are almost like the stages of grieving. You bring up an interesting point. Nearly every significant change that occurs in SL seems to go through similar phases.

Thank you Mark for your reply, I think your response shed some light on the matter. just a few more points I wish to have cleared.
We use antispyware on our computers on a regular basis just to keep some sort of privacy on our computers. The internet is a far from anonymous place, I and most others realize this. But what we can't understand is why you did this? It is an interestning experiment but (and this is the big but), why so much collateral? Why do you drag in the bystanders and publish information about them on your page?
EDIT: Wrong name.. dammit *blushes*

As Torley said, "If you haven't already, please do forum searches dating several years back about similar privacy concerns involving Resident-run databases. By far and large, they were unfounded, and due to a misunderstanding of the technology involved. Having someone's UUID (Universally Unique Identifier) is *not* the same as knowing personal and private info about them, such as their credit card number. Far from it."

From: Jon Rolland Pretty easy to be all good if you ignore negative feedback. What I mean is that I'm hearing someone saying it should be opt-in, but I'm ignoring their legal threats. It's opt-out for now. That may change. Everything could. Nothing about SLStats is set in stone. You guys just seem so busy making all these threats that it seems nobody ever considered the possibility that solid constructive feedback (positive and negative) can achieve so much more. If someone IMs me saying they want to be removed, I drop a opt-out cube into their inventory. Problem resolved. If someone IMs me huffing and puffing how I should be raped, shot, and *then* sued, do you think I am stlll interested in listening to their concerns and assisting them? Yeah, sure I'll get right on that. Not.
