Shack, I don't like to say you're wrong, but I think you're wrong.

I respect what you're saying, but honestly I don't see how anything you said contradicts anything I said.

I'm sorry to hear about this. I don't think I ever saw a large percentage of Starax's work, but that which I did see definitely wowed me. Probably my favorite sculpture of his was that transparent pegasus rearing up -- it was really magical for me, somehow.

And GAH, I always wanted to check out that wand! I kept hearing so much about it! Dang... I don't know the extent of his reasons for leaving, but he could have at least given us all some degree of notice before just up and disappearing like this. :(

Starax, if you're reading this... I never really got to know you, but I've always had a huge amount of respect for the awesome work you've done in SL. Although I can't change your mind, I do wish you would consider coming back. You've really made an impact on this world.

There are a small handful of residents whose departure would shake the foundation of Second Life, and I think Starax is one of them. I sincerely hope he is not actually gone forever. I would also like to think that somebody at Linden Lab is trying to get in touch with him on the phone to lure him back. SL isn't the same place without him. :(

Not one person who plays SL is that important. None of us.

We all play our part in making the world what it is, but if any of us leave, everything just carries on, and someone will step up into that place and replace them. It happens, things change.

If he didn't even bother to post a 'goodbye' to anyone who knows him, then I would say that puts a fairly good perspective on quite how important any of you were, over and above your L$ that bought the wand.

People move on all the time. Deal with it.

Our single moment of clarity. I agree. :p

I agree with previous poster. It's like saying you can copy the mona lisa. Doesn't matter what improvements are made to the program, or what new talented people can do. The combination of sculpting, humour, ideas, scripting which is bundled into the wand IS a unique one, and I don't think it's going to be surpassed.

Also you have to bear in mind that he had it set up for an automatic update. It would give you a new one, with new items in it. There were also games from time to time, which could be played.

Really, Shack, you need to see it before you say again that it's not difficult to compete with. It comes across as arrogance to say you -- or anyone -- can replicate something if you haven't ever seen it, and that's not something I usually associate with you.

And Siobahn... if you didn't see the Tsunami, Ship, dragon, heaven, glasshouse, fireballs, eagle, achilles, etc etc etc... then watch and regret you didn't buy one :-(.

Aw man. Starax leaving SL is the worst news I've heard this year :( :(

From: someone

The others, they have gone
Who wants to live forever
With nothing left to hold onto the past that we once knew
We believed in heaven, we believed in angels
With arms of purest white
To hold us, catch us when we fall

edit: Lewis, this thread is not about you so ... whatever

I'm pretty sure the wand can be emulated, if you find someone with enough time on their hands. Sure i could do it but i don't have that time. It isn't just some simple Rezzer. The items do stuff... Lots of different stuff.

I've visted Starax shop in the past about 3 times. His stuff was pretty pricy but it was good. If he is infact the same starax i once knew in AO back when i used to play it, then he definatly is a close friend of mine. If not, he can be. :)

Starax will be missed.

I always admired his birds, sculptures and of course, the wand, which is a culmination of of his creations.

Very few could create alike his skill and prowess.

I wonder if somewhere out there there is an unverified newb wearing a default outfit and settling down to enjoying SL without all the pressures and responsibilities of their old SL?
I hope so.

I'm kind of new to SL but I hope that we are all jumping to conclusions about Starax leaving. He made some super nice things and was very kind and helpful when I needed some help with one of his statues.

I was planning on getting a whole lot more of his stuff. I hope that he's just taking a little break. *fingers crossed* If anybody has some Starax items for sale, I'm looking for a few things. :)

Shack, this thread is a wake of sorts; some people are bound to exaggerate or become sentimental. Of course there will be other astounding creations, and this isn't the end of art in SL, but Starax's works were singular and exceptional, and have been for as long as 99% of us have been here. I haven't seen the wand, but I think what people are saying is that to "make another one" would entail creating something else not only singular and exceptional, but also preceded by a recognizable style and known body of work.

Personally, his work didn't push my buttons, though I recognized the quality and craft in it. His themes tended to be Biblical and dualistic, with an emphasis on war and death, and I definitely prefer my Cthulhus to his :D . His reputation as a person was not glowing, though I heard mostly from biased sources, and the one conversation I recall having with him, he came off as quite negative (not unfriendly, just a dour outlook) and a tad neurotic. Still, it's weird that he's gone. Having come into this world and joined an artists' colony first thing, I was pretty immediately exposed to Starax, and he's been there, through his work, ever since. For anyone involved in the art side of SL for any length of time, his leaving is a pretty fundamental change.

I did see, I didn't regret. Not that I could have afforded one if I had wanted to... (well, I could have bought on the Lindex, but it wasn't impressive enough to me for me to want to.) I agree it's a shame it won't be sold any more though for those who did like it.

At some point, you have to accept the fact that people have their own motives and that maybe they have nothing to do with Second Life.

and may i ask you what your motives are for coming in were people who miss someone are and being a ass?
it is akin to going to a funeral and bad mouthing the deceased

( and yes i know it is not the same level but it is as tactless)

Also now reading further others have said what i was thinking, it is not teh technical side of it but the art and soul that he put into his work that cannot be duplicated. And , if it actually ever was..it would be just that..a copy of some one else's vision.

And for lewis, i know your motivation, it is teh same as it always is, being contrary, you are just plain wrong , we are not equal, we do not all contribute the same, some are gifted and talented and they contribute much more to this world than others, if i were to leave, outside of a small group of friends, i would not be missed, i have not left any lasting imprint here. Others have, and others will.

I'm sure it will, but I'm sure that I could create it if I decided to.

Not saying that it wouldn't take some time. Not saying that Starax isn't incredibly talented.

Just asking for a description in words about what it does specifically.

Hehehehehe... any scripter with a piddlin of talent can create the "wand". Of course you can make a wand.

The wonder of it all was the True Art that it rezzed. I'm not a word-smith I can't do it justice with a proper description... you just have to find somebody to show you the wonder of it all.
