Shack, you won't find a whole lot of people that share your view here. You joined in this conversation with what amounted to "So what's so great about this Starax guy? His wand made stuff appear? I could do that. What's so great about that? I'm as good as him; I'll just replace him."
You didn't even know what a Starax Wand did, so that right there tells me, and countless others, you were kinda clueless on who Starax was, what his contributions are, what his departure signifies, etc.
The issue is not with whether or not someone can build or script as well as Starax, the issue is people like you not recognizing what he did for SL, not even taking the time to find out "what the fuss is all about" before blurting out, "Oh, I can do that."

Even if he could make it, he can't remake his posts.

Aaron,
You obviously don't know me and I certainly don't know you.
I never said, " Oh, I can do that!"
I've seen his sculptures and was impressed.
What I said was anyone can do that. Any one of us has the capability of doing what Starax did.
If you don't believe it, then you're blind.

From: Shack Dougall That's just sentamental mumbo jumbo. I say it not to denigrate, but because the fact of/ (actually, the thing that makes life interesting) is that it will be duplicated and made even more interesting by another.
Could be. but you know what. I don't think anyone wants to be a god. Maybe that became more than he could handle and he just took this as an excuse to leave.
At some point, you have to accept the fact that people have their own motives and that maybe they have nothing to do with Second Life. Shack, I don't like to say you're wrong, but I think you're wrong. The Starax wand was a unique object. I was lucky enough to be given one for Christmas by a generous and dear SL friend, and I have had more fun with it than with any other object in Second Life. There speaks someone who had 30,000 objects in her inventory and hardly any of them clothes and hair. I've halved that, but I would remove all my textures AND all my hair before I lost my wand. The wand is set to rez not just objects but whole scenes, moving items etc. I will demonstrate it for you if you wish. It not only had the fantastic items which Starax makes, his sculptures and other objects, it had a sense of humour, fantastic scripting, things which I am still wondering how you do. Saying bubble produces a bubble which allows you to float in it away to the borders of the sim, bowling over and over. Saying tsunami rezzes a huge...tsunami which has to be seen to be believed. Saying hell produces not just fire and brimstone but floating shrieking skeletons. Saying heaven produces a scaffold, which if clicked transports you to the skies above and a long tunnel with a light at the end of it. Saying dragon produces a huge flapping beast which can be ridden across the skies, shooting fire from its mouth. Saying worship produces a circle of praying monks. Saying train produces a tunnel and a long lifesize train which runs you over. Getting the picture? The wand was expensive, but the fact that everyone who saw it wanted one indicates just how wonderful it is. I don't know of another product which had such a universal appeal. I use mine when talking to new people, as a demonstration of some of the wonderful things that can be done in SL. But unless someone around here has amazing sculpting skills, amazing scripting skills, a huge sense of humour, imagination, and the ability to cram these altogether into one product, I don't think anyone is going to be producing a competitive product in a hurry. I like confident people, like people who are up for a challenge. You just have NO idea what you are trying to compete with. Starax's wand was so impressive it was mentioned in the talk to Google that Philip and Cory made, which is available on Google video. It was apparently still earning Starax a lot of money... it is possible but seems unlikely that he'd have withdrawn from SL as a choice, as you suggest. It was a unique product and if anyone manages to make one one-quarter as good I shall be astonished. If they have allowed it to be broken and not made herculean efforts to fix it again, LL are being very foolish. Starax was a veritable one-man band of so many talents. If they have permabanned him for the video he posted on the forums, which was so tame I don't think I would have minded my grandmother seeing it, it's a crime against SL's community. On the other hand, if he just got fed up and left, well who could blame him? The amount of work which into that one product was phenomenal. Anyone who has seen it understands that it is unique. Cali

im sad
08-08-2006 00:43
never had the pleasure of meeting Starax, but his sculptures took my breath away, and i am enraged that L L let such a talented artist that gave everyone such joy here, get away. Starax brought magic and wonder to SL...Once again i say shame on you LL. This place is not better for the loss.
I suppose his land will become one more escort lounge our something just as cheesy as SL is becoming day by day. Hope Starax returns and if he does, omg i want a wand toooo!!! Always meant to get over and see what it was all about, now its too late and i am very sad.
This is just depressing...

I have been in SL since 2003 and I have never seen a sculptor whose capabilities even approached his, let alone surpassed them. Saying that anyone has the capability of doing what Starax did is like saying anyone has the capability of picking up a Stradivarius violin and playing it to its absolute fullest. It's very easy to look at something and say to yourself, "Eh, that looks simple, I could do it," without fully appreciating the huge amount of time and love that it takes to become that skillful. You might try for years and not be able to pull off what he did. He produced high quality in high quantity, which is rare enough, and he did it in a system that would send most 3D "human form" artists running in terror.

If we knew everything a prim sculpture was capabable of being, I'd agree with you. The problem is that we are so early in this art that anything we say is incredibly fleeting. We don't know what is good and what is bad. we can only say what we've seen for at most 4 years. I've said it over and over that Starax is very talented. But I believe in my heart that he is happy with that. I don't think he wants to be a god.

There are a few of us who could duplicate what he made, but the important thing is that Starax wasn't copying someone elses work, he did it from within his own head, and that makes a huge difference. He was supremely talented in that way. As to the wand. A few people have said that it was this and it was that, and everyone who saw it, wanted one... Well, you're wrong... I saw it, got a demo, and while it looked cool, it wasn't *that* impressive... No, I didn't want one... though of course, had I been given one as a gift at the time, I wouldn't have turned my nose up... I just would never have considered actually buying one.

Hey! I knew that goon Starax. Before he left, he told me that he was leaving because it was time to move on. He hasn't been banned and he isn't annoyed with Linden Lab or anything like that. He just said that it was time to move on and that he was leaving for many reasons. Good riddance I say!

From: Shack Dougall Let's not be naive. he posted yesterday. "<Droll comment warning people of evil Ulrika's desire for world domination>" Well true, but being here doesn't equate to being in world... and just cos he was here yesterday doesn't mean he's here today... On the other hand, he could be reading this right now.

Well, I wouldn't consider myself his friend, but he did say junk to me. He was talking about the full permission bug with the temp on rez. Also, he was upset about the temp on rez behavior changing and him having problems with that. All of which you all already mentioned.

There are a small handful of residents whose departure would shake the foundation of Second Life, and I think Starax is one of them. I sincerely hope he is not actually gone forever. I would also like to think that somebody at Linden Lab is trying to get in touch with him on the phone to lure him back. SL isn't the same place without him.
