Question to those who are delighted that these forums are closing. Why did you come here in the first place? A sure fire way to make any forum dissapear for you is to not go there!

Don't get me wrong, I'm not shouting "love it or leave it here." I just can't think of any other situation where such a statement would be made.

"Blech! The food at this restaurant is terrible! I can't wait until they close it down. OK, see you here for lunch same time tomorrow."

:D

This is something brilliant that I honestly didn't expect you to have the opinion of.

Honest to god, Aimee, this is the only thing that has brought me close to telling people to stfu or worse: people with thousands of posts, who had posted every thing that came to their mind back in their time with no filter whatsoever applied to their thought process, who prance back in here with their nose in the air to announce that, in their (who gives a fuck) opinion, the forums are a waste and should be closed.

Well, the forums were okay once. But then all these lamers showed up and Linden Lab was ill-equipped to handle them. Moreover, the balance of lamers to decent people skewed heavily in the direction of lamers, whereas previously the decent were sufficient in number to suppress the lame.

So, it was worthwhile once. But then it went straight to hell. Now, viewing this wasteland of lameness, I believe the experiment ought be terminated.

Oh, looking at a few datapoints, looks like the event horizon for what I described falls somewhere around December, 2004. ;)

Don't think I don't know it. ;)

Sharing between the resident run forums?
09-04-2006 19:05
What will the policies of the various resident run sites be regarding use of material on other resident run sites?

Who owns a user's post - is there any reason why one can't post identical material to multiple RRFs? (or should the acronym be 3PFs?)

It might be good to have a sharing policy for some information, specifically bug reports and warnings of exploits.

I'm thinking of the Associated Press - if you want to get your story distributed around the world you don't have to submit it individually to every paper in the world; if you can get it picked up by the A.P. then every member paper can print it if they choose.

Well not so much "official" but maybe "convenient"?

It would be kind of cool if somebody could set up an AP-like service to which all the other forums could subscribe (if they want), saving users the trouble of posting over and over for each of the forums.

New-products comes to mind as most SL designers will want to post their new stuff in the product section of every forum. At 8-10 major forums currently in the running, that's going to be time consuming.

Yes. She writes very well! :)

I keep offering her a job at the M2, just in case this whole "Empress of the Metaverse" gig doesn't pan out -- but she hasn't taken me up on it so far. :p

Aimee, I tend to agree with what you're saying ... and especially with respect to some of these people ... but I also understand what Coco is saying, and I also tend to agree with it.

However, I think, Coco, that if you had your choice of situations, the ideal one would be the forums remaining but being, for once and perhaps the first time ever, properly, fairly and competently moderated. Like they ought to have been all along. Am I right?

Aimee -

I am not sure how the other forums run things, but, on ours we could easily use the RSS Functionality to accomplish something of the sort. In fact, a person could just subscribe to our RSS to get a snapshot of all of the posts.

If people are interested I could easily set up an RSS stream out of just a particular area. Also, we of course have the ability to do an RSS in.

Most usefull would be if someone wanted to take the reigns and design a website that loaded these RSS feeds from each forum onto one easy to view page.

Just some random thoughts.

Our current Second Life RSS http://e-pec.info/forum/index.php?act=rssout&id=4

In fact, in looking into this further, I could very easily set up a daily feed from SLExchange (http://slexchange.com/rss/marketplace_new.php) that would show all of the newest items there...

Here it is actually :P

Do I win something?

New products would be nice to propagate. It would also be nice to have one place to post bug reports and have them readable on all sites.

I'd like to have the sites post their policies about cross posting , both your own posts and copying and pasting other people's posts, in order to prevent disputes.

If sharing information makes all the sites more useful, and thus attract more users, it allow the site operators to take slices of a bigger pie rather than fighting for a bigger share of a smaller pie.

This page seems to be a central location for bugs. Too bad it doesn't support RSS...
