Except Stratics, of course, which more than qualifies as a viable alternative.

http://sl.stratics.com or drop by our HQ (under construction) in my picks.

Man, how much would it suck to have an agenda to promote and then not have any credibility with which to do it thanks to a consistent history of loathesome behavior? Poor Lewis.

edit: Also, nice newbie look you're sporting there! :)

Yes. Don't forget I have a forum too!

There's just two users. Ulrika and I take turns accusing each other of things and then apologizing to each other.

OK that's funny as hell! Hehe

It's gagged for silence, in protest about the forums closing.

So why use it? There are a ton of blogs that don't shove such things down your throat.

Is that really the only sort of riposte you've got to work with? The "I know you are but what am I" business really works less and less the more people you use it with.

I could set you up with some kindergarten sparring partners who would eat it up, though.

Aimee is being employed by Weblogs, Inc which is a subsidiary of AOL. That's her bosses idea , not hers I assume. SLI seems more eyebleedy than Engadget and some of the other Weblogs Inc brand blogs for some reason.

Well my official position on the subject as an employee of AOL is that SLI is a finely crafted site with artfully subtle sponsors who...AAAAHHH MY EYES!! THEY BLEED!!!!!

Lewis, Enabran, let's cut to the chase. Whip them out, we'll use a tape measure, and Aimee can be the final arbiter of which is larger. :-P

Do any of these sites offer the ability for people to use private group forums?

This seems to me that it would be useful for businesses, people plannng projects, and folks who want to discuss stuff in a forum format they don't want people to see.

SLUniverse.com supports private group forums.

As I'm sure you know vBulletin supports groups and custom access rights, so while there is no active post about supporting them SuezanneC, I'd be happy to host private forums within the system. I know that's an option that will also be needed when I activate Flash Chat (a Macromedia Flash-based chat system that can be integrated into a system like vBulletin) which I recently purchased.

I am also mulling over hosting a TeamSpeak server as part of my upcoming proposal regarding communications (I'm still working on the images and pseudo-code). I've found sites that offer hosting for up to 100 accounts as low as $30/month.

I will investigate the setup procedure for groups in vBulletin and post about them shortly at both the Second Life Home Page Portal and in the forums themselves:

I don't see the ads people object to when I look at Aimee's site. That is, they aren't displayed; it's not just a quirk in my visual system.

Why would that be? Opera does have some compatibility problems with some sites but inability to show annoying ads doesn't generally seem to be one them?

Clubside's duplication of SL forum structure might offer an interesting possibility. If the SL forums are indeed maintained in read only form, Clubside might be able to make a "Search This Forums Archive" option and search the SL forums, copy the resulting posts, and display them on his site. I'm sure there's bound to be a reason why this wouldn't be allowed but it doesn't hurt to toss an idea out.

Everyone running SL sites who wants more traffic to their web site should be pestering LL to give us more access to the in-world mozilla browser, in a separate window from the help window, without waiting for it to be a completely functional web browser or to to able to be displayed on object surfaces. (Hmh, why not HTML on skin and clothes as well as objects?... ignore that thought.)

It's interesting how much competition there is in 3rd party SL forums.

I've lost count there are so many of them so far ROFL.

Whelp to add my hat in the ring, blog, etc I started SecondSoul.net a short time ago. We have free blogs, with custom skin abilities (still in the beta stage, but anyone is welcome to grab one now) User friendly gallery with free albums and video support. Up to date information regarding Linden Labs and even a fresh new custom look. Not to mention private and public group forum support.

One of the biggest things I am working on will be a consumer reports style feature were we rate and compare various products and services within SL. Community and paid support will help us review and publish. Other things that we'll soon include will be free and paid advertising, and in world events at a new custom built event center. (still under construction.)

(Just to make things clear, pardon the caps)
WE OFFER:
- FREE BLOGS (Custom skin abilities per blog on request coming soon)
- FREE GALLERY ALBUMS
- FREE PIE AND CHIPS!
- FREE GROUP FORUMS

I have seen the discussion on "Verified Avatars" here and I personally don't see a major reason for it. With proper mild moderating any forum can be a clean, friendly drama free place. Heck, in my opinion that’s what admin are for. I wish everyone’s endeavor luck, and hopefully we’ll all be around for a long time! ;)

By the way, I’m still looking for support running this site, if anyone is interested in a business relationship or has ideas on how to make our sites better, I’m always open to suggestions and ideas.

Check us our, we are literally brand new as of late Friday, and looking for new members!

Good Luck, :D

On the rating values, she lost me the moment she gave SC four ... butterflies. That pretty much tells me I'm going to have to check each one individually to find out whether we even come close to agreeing.

Still, it was handy to get a few more names to look into.

<hold hand up>

Here.

In fact, I was considering the idea of allowing residents private blogs. I was going to recode the forums to allow each user a sub-forum to act as a private blog, but was not sure if anyway would want that considering that you can easily get a blog at blogspot...

<shrugs> I considered creating a gallery, but that would be a bit silly, since we all already have one in snapzilla.

Oooo, I like that idea! Anything that lets me make it all more about me. :p

No, but that really does sound like a nice touch, adding personal blogs. ;)

Just a quick insight into my my thinking...

Second Citizen mostly had the same features as the 3-star forums, therefore I could have considered giving them 3-butterflies. But they also had four to eight times the number of registered users than the other 3-butterflies forums, and ten to twenty times more posts.

Right now Second Citizen enjoys a more active userbase than all other third party forums combined, so I felt it deserved a nudge and 4-butterflies was the next step up. Of course, posting activity wasn't the end-all-be-all for my rating standards, which is why Second Citizen didn't take the lead.

Naturally we are all going to judge forums by our own standards and of course there will be disagreements as to what features should carry more weight. But I hope none of my ratings were so anomalous as to discredit the whole rating system.
