Uh yeah ok. That's the spirit. Linden Lab is a content hosting company, not a content creating company. If they want content to show off their product let them hire professionally the way any other software company would. Really the final word was here and I fully agree with it. Thanks for all of your comments and ideas, and especially to Bhodi for her original discussion on SLUniverse. Taking everything into consideration, we've decided to table this program idea. As many of you have pointed out, there are a lot of great and imaginative builds in SL that were created without loans or special support. And we agree we shouldn't take up a lot of staff resources evaluating and helping manage projects. Nor do we want to create another situation where the possibility exists for charges of favoritism. There's probably a business opportunity here, for those who would like to help jump start new businesses. Like most things in SL, the community is the best place for this help to come from. _____________________

I think that's what they did. Wrong thread ![]() I think what they did for the banking company was fine. The new program for that sounds good too. _____________________

I don't get it, in one breath you're saying "skip it" and another you're saying the new program sounds fine. In both instances, LL would have the final say as to which players get the support. _____________________

There are still LL sponsored contests such as the Game Dev Contest, and the Cory Doctrow book event. As far as LL just sponsoring large builds... what's the point? A lot of people are doing it now with no support. Just looking for a rational argument. Why do people need help from the Lindens?

I'm thinking about builds like the Ivory Towers, just off the top of my head. Builds that aren't just pretty but useful to a ton of players. _____________________

I don't get it, in one breath you're saying "skip it" and another you're saying the new program sounds fine. In both instances, LL would have the final say as to which players get the support. This program is about companies coming to Linden Lab asking for a contractor reference to hire for their project. This sounds right on, and in keeping with Linden Lab's eventual role as manager and central hub of a larger grid. This thread is about Linden Lab paying for users to create content for everyones general use. Linden lab isn't in that business, and has stated that they aren't going to be, as previously quoted. Let this content be privately supported. _____________________

Why do people need help from the Lindens? ![]() You own land in Neualtenburg, which got its start as a Linden-sponsored group project. It received temporary initial support and then spun off into a self-sustaining nonprofit cooperative. If I had not won that contest, the city and SL's first nonprofit land cooperative and social democracy most certainly wouldn't exist. The Linden's suggestion that there is a potential "business opportunity here, for those who would like to help jump start new businesses" doesn't really apply to projects such as ours or projects which involve inherently unprofitable group activities like art. ~Ulrika~ _____________________

Let this content be privately supported. Gotcha. I disagree though. I think there are builds that are worth being sponsored now, like the Ivory Towers, and there could be more. Infrastructure would be nice since the content team are probably short on time now to create such things. _____________________

If you're really interested in poll results, give us a non-biased poll to vote in.

A lot of people are doing it now with no support. Just looking for a rational argument. Why do people need help from the Lindens? Then again, think of things such as Burning Life. I saw some of the coolest builds in SL presented there, and none of them had to worry about setting up vending space or hosting Hot Thong Tringo to try and make back a pittance of their tier fees. Sponsored areas allow for pure creative freedom, without having to constantly check your budget and worry about the bottom line. (Semi off-topic here... Anyone know when the next Burning Life will be? If they've decided not to host them anymore.. don't tell me. I'll cry. I finally have a good build idea.) _____________________

You own land in Neualtenburg, which got its start as a Linden-sponsored group project. It received temporary initial support and then spun off into a self-sustaining nonprofit cooperative. If I had not won that contest, the city and SL's first nonprofit land cooperative and social democracy most certainly wouldn't exist. I voted Yes to this poll long ago. I think the grid benefits from high quality content, and suffers when places like Spitoonie have to shut down. I would love to see them have a contest with the topic "The New User Experience", where groups propose SIM-sized project ideas that can help the greeters volunteers teach new users about the world. However I was hoping someone would make a really good argument for sponsored content. The Ivory Tower is definately a good example, I send all the new users I meet there. I can also speak first hand, that participating in a Linden contest (Game Dev Contest) is the most fun I've had since logging in. The whole favoritism side of the crowd is delusional. I know I hadn't met a Linden before this contest and was still chosen as a participant. The people accussed of being those magic three letters are all high end, high quality content producers in SL. It wouldn't be inconcievable that people who rely on end user content to make ends, would like to showcase the world's best artists. Favoring skill is different from favoring personality. _____________________

I imagine you could probably talk to an Anshe or a Hiro and they might be able to work with you on a temporary loan of a sim in favor of some free publicity.

You and Sig going? If he can get some time off, I'd love to go. Depends on when Sweeps is, I suspect. I have some friends coming out from Colorado and California for it, so I might drag my bro if Sig has to work. _____________________

You and Sig going? I might be able to go out with the crew to shoot the man getting all flamey (which is my fave part ... FIRE FIRE EH EH EHE EH FIRE!!!!) If not I'll probably be back at the station editing the package on it. Would love to go though, one of my hero's, Reverend Gadget, is a regular there. _____________________
