I would like to see LL bring back Linden-sponsored builds. Just remember the controversy of Neualtenburg, the joy of Neverland, the detail of Chinatown, and let's not forget Cristiano's House of Socks. I'd love to see such opportunities return to SL. After all, it's how they sold an island sim to us and kept me hooked in a game that otherwise I would have left months ago.

Official list of reasons:
  1. LL sponsored projects can jump start novel organizations and groups.
  2. Temporary land leases can lead to private island or continent land sales.
  3. The variety is fun for us veteran players.
  4. Land is so cheap right now, why not?
  5. There are dozens of undiscovered SL geniuses waiting for an opportunity.

What do you think?

I think more stuff like the Game Dev Contests should happen, without the emphasis on "game" and "contest."

... if you see what I'm getting at here.

I think it makes logical business sense for LL to sponsor some projects. They need content in the world to keep people here, not all people who come to SL are creative. The creative people will tire of builds or when money is tight SL (which is a complete luxury) is the first thing to go. LL needs to stop pandering to the crybaby players with the mentality of self esteem deprived 7th graders and do what makes good business sense. It makes sound and logical business sense to support user content and developer incentives are not enough. All companies have freebies and loss leaders; LL needs to step up their loss leaders a little more. Overall, LL seems to be in a very dangerous position. The pander to the community like this is some utopia land of friendship and love *gag*, when LL is really a business and should act as such. Businesses are in business to make a profit, not make friends, making friends is nice, if those friends help you make money, if they don't well they aren't useful for business.

I think that LL can easily support user content. They need to make people sign NDA forms and hold them to the agreements. It doesn’t hurt anyone if a project is supported by LL, if they don't know about it. That will take care of all the fragile egos of those not chosen to be "special", whiners.

Where is the option "no I dont think they should - just because it makes the usual crowd whine like babies for days in the forum and causes Ulrika to preen around in her annoying way stirring things up and I really don't need to hear any more from her thankyou"?

While I'd love to see this, I doubt it will happen. There are some, very vocal, folks in SL that would whine till the cows came home about FIC, favoritism, elitism, etc.

Who would want to deal with that headache? Who would want to approach a project knowing that some folks would point fingers and claim they are <insert nifty classist label here>?

There are some very talented builders in SL. I would love to see them get a crack at adding something permanent to the SL landscape.

But as everyone else has pointed out, a Linden can't so much as be in the same sim with an established or accomplished player anymore before someone cries foul. :(

Let them cry foul. I want talented builders to create wonderful works of infrastructure. Welcome Areas, Recruitment Centers, Ampitheatres, bridges... give us a crack at everything!

In every population there's always a small group of envious naysayers. At work they put down the work of others, in a team they play down the accomplishments of the stronger athletes, in school they make fun of the smart kids.

Let's not let envious complainers define our SL experience and instead bring back the great content and events promoted by LL-sponsored projects.

As long as the process isn't done in secret, and everyone has a fair chance to participate I don't see a issue with it.

The problem in the past was that certain people would request help and get it, example Neverland, and other people would request help and get the brush off, example Sim Horror. There seems to be no logical pattern to how these things are awarded.

Another group I know of approached LL about a massive multi sim build several months before either of the cases above, asking for Linden assistance, not full backing, just aid, and were flatly denied. LL stated they they no longer supported user build efforts under any circumstance. This group had a building track record, a good plan, and excellent reputations.

A month later other people were getting multiple sims for free for months on end.

This is certainly not a favorite group issue, as all three groups would be probably be considered by some to be a part of the fictitious master race group. It is merely a complete randomness of policy implementation on Linden Lab's part.

Make the award program public, and the selection process transparent, so users know what they are up against.

Also remember that every time Linden Lab deeds free resources to a group it makes it harder for users that pay out of pocket compete, and less likely that private efforts will be attempted in the first place.

How could the selection process ever be transparent? The process of seeing something you like and deciding to buy it is entirely subjective. And then the Lindens would be accused, once again, of playing favourites.

Good question. Just another reason to skip it.

I enjoyed the Linden sponsored builds I visited. I would like to see more of them.

As for people crying about it.. Let them cry. If you pick them up every time they start crying, you'll spoil them.

Don't let some shit-stirrers dictate what LL should do and shouldn't do. That's giving the shit-stirrers far more power than they deserve.

Nonsense. The Lindens make hard choices every day either by hiring and firing personel, choosing a direction for their company, or promoting one employee over another. Making hard decisions and living the with results is part of being an adult (and a corporation).

Does LL allow jealousy to cripple their internal corporate system? I doubt it. Why should they allow it to cripple their virtual political system?

The lindens are already paying for people to build things:
