Question for Philip:
SL's population has doubled in a very short time and the sandboxes are full. Can we expect more sandboxes to accomodate the rise in population? Sincerely, Ingrid Ingersoll P.S. Please call. _____________________

Question:
Why are Linden Lab's development priorities so out of touch with what users are actually asking for? _____________________

I think the bit you quoted explains much of it: "[they think] it'll kill the stores and malls which rent a lot of land in SL" There is one huge advantage to SLBoutique.com: there are many clothiers who make their items copy, no-xfer, so being able to send a "gift" to another player as one can via SLB is just impossible in-game. This whole dance is an artifact of the fine SL permissions system, but... moderators: I know that this is off the topic of the OP, but this thread has broadened into a general discussion, so please don't hate me. _____________________

Would it be possible to get a clear picture of LL development priorities for the next 6 months or so, to help those who are waiting on key promised features to be able to plan for our own projects?

DMCA & Copyright/Customer service concern
03-13-2006 14:26
Customer service, and the process of trying to provide it, is still problematic in SL. People cite the resmod program as an example of an inappropriate and unwelcome program that has served to alienate members rather than create a more welcoming environment.
Another example are claims made pursuant to the DMCA. Despite representations that LL will honor claims properly made pursuant to this act LL has failed to remove content that violates the copyrights of members. Another attorney inside SL and I have submitted claims, through proper legal channels and procedure on behalf of members, yet the offending content was not removed by LL. This, too, seems to be a disregard of customer service and membership concerns. Will LL be removing content from inside SL that is subject to claims made pursuant to the DMCA? Will LL be hiring actual employees whose sole purpose is to devote attention to customer service matters? _____________________

When will we get shopping included in the interface? Since classifieds are already included, it should be fairly simple to add a "buy now" button to make sales much more convenient. This would be of real benefit to the community at large. And while we're at it, why not add in a web-based shopping portal as well? |

Seconding Sable Sunset's post/question. It really does sum up most of the questions (complaints?) posted here.
I also second the posts asking Philip for whom he feels are SL's direct competitors, or at least where this supposed 2006-arriving-competition is coming from. _____________________

Second Life for Pro Engineers
03-14-2006 05:17
I am involved in an engineering discussion group, and as part of a recent project, several of us are looking at the way the Net affects us on a daily basis. OK, now here is my idea/thought
In the professional Engineering community, a person is less likely to use a system like Second Life because of the 'fluff'. Would it be possible to strip SL down to a barebones, physics sim with group capabilities? I am thinking of a system where professional engineers could form discussion groups, demonstrate 3d models, and interact in an environment uncluttered by thigs like malls, stores, entertainment, etc. I think Linden Labs could develop this with reletive ease, and provide it as a seperate world, or grid. please refer to this URL for more information about what I am talking about: http://groups.google.com/group/NEW-discussion I believe that the Second Life 3D environment would be a powerful tool for engineers, but I don't think engineers are as likely to use the system as it exists now. |

This has been posted in other threads, but....
What's the need for the land reservation system? Is there some technical limitation of which users are unaware that makes this necessary? Is there a reason for it other than creating a new revenue stream? I realize these are, to be precise, three questions. However, I hope they're closely related enough to be considered together. |

Second this idea
03-14-2006 06:34
A lot of private sim owners desire access to open water for light-load recreational purposes, but the purchase options Linden Lab currently offers aren't financially viable on a small scale: either overengineered (and overpriced for this purpose) full-load single sims, or a four-pack of more appropriately-endowed (and suitably priced) 'void' sims. Would Linden Lab consider offering such reduced-price 'void' sims for sale on an a-la-carte basis, one or two at a time, to allow private sim owners the same recreational opportunities afforded residents on the mainland? I second this idea!! |

Navigable waters = good thing
![]() 03-14-2006 06:54
In the far southeast continent, you have created a series of islands surrounded by water. However, there is not a continuous ring of protected not-for-sale water sims around this continent, so people boating or flying aircraft contend with security scripts, ban lines and obstructive builds. When will you connect the protected water sims you already have in place, so that we have the infrastructure to use our boats and planes properly? If you want resident-created content and events, you need to provide at least some infrastructure to support us. Give us navigable water, please. ..... I second this proposal. Any options that provide more navigable waters are good options in my view. |

I would like to see an answer to this question. It is disturbing that the southeast continent has been left in a half-done state for so long. The water issues and notches in the land on the far southwest side make it appear that Linden Labs is unable to provide coherent landscape. This is odd for a company that is in the business of selling virtual land.
We know that void sims are much much less expensive to provide than regular sims. Linden Labs left out the roads and other transportation infrastructure in the southeast continent. Can you provide at least a ring of navigable water to an area with land designed specifically to appeal to a marine/boating community? This issue applies to the other mainland continents as well, but the need is acute in the southeast continent, as the formerly open water gets clogged with builds, ban lines, and security scripts...and we don't have any roads. The payoff is the greatest here too, since a few more void sims will make it possible to navigate around the continent independent of the whims of specific landowners. Specifics: 1.) Link protected water Daebeom-Pulsori with Byeolgwadal-Garam-Nana by putting one sim east of Danbi 2.) link the existing protected water sims Daebeom-Pulsori to Haneulgil, with a one sim east of Haneulgil 3.) Link protected water in Cheongdam-Jilseo-Sandeulbaram-Banpo-Tal-Jinju-Dongbaekmaeul-Neulchan-Daseuri with Haengbok by putting one sim west of Haengbok and one north of Cheongdam Steps 1-3 use 4 void sims to consolidate the existing navigable water on the east and west side of the continent. These two areas can be links by adding 7 protected water sims: north of Haengbok, west of Sanchon, north of Haneulgil, north and northeast of Yongchon, north and northwest of Sanchon. |

Robin, I'm not sure if this'll get to you, but this is an important issue I'd like to bring up at the townhall.
It's detailed here, and it's something I've asked on before; /13/ca/93123/1.html#post930999 ....basically in regard to the state of land management tools on the mainland. It's starting to overrun us; our lack of supervisory and management capability. I hope this does get brought up. Thanks, Michi |

Based on discussions I have been having with LL regarding an expansion of sailing sims around Hollywood sim (which has apparently created some debate within LL), I obviously am VERY interested in hearing some input on the concept of more horizontally oriented "private sim packages". What I mean by that is that the current private sim structure is vertically oriented, that is, one region to a CPU which works well for thos sims that hold events for lots of residents in small spaces. What SL needs to provide going forwards is an option for a horizontal oriented playing space for activities that involve larger scale action. For example in the case of sailboat racing, there is a need for larger than region sized sailing space that has more cpu resources than current void sims provide (which i believe is 4 regions per CPU). I proposed a 2:1 "reduced load" package to LL which was orignally given the thumbs up then 24 hours later put on hold while LL discussed the concept. This reduced load package is a full price package that spreads the single CPU over two reduced load regions. As SL grows there will be an increasing demand for such more horizontal oriented activities. We realize a 2:1 package would necessitate reduced resourse allowance per region but the gain in performance for transcient activity in a setting more robust than void sims offer is needed. There are a good many of us that would like to see this happen, and would appreciate you addressing the question. _____________________

Will We Have Portals To Other Worlds?
03-14-2006 21:33
Can folks get set up on their own perpetually expanding grid and not have to worry about reserving space on the Main Grid and being hemmed in by other regions? If so, would there be an ability to travel between such a grid and the Main Grid? Is there just one world or are there parallel worlds?

In order for us to go through all these questions and answer as many as possible, I'm going to close off the thread. Please join us at the Town Hall meeting on Thursday, 3/16 at 2:30 SLT (Pacific) if you are able. If you can't make the meeting, and have a question you just can't pass up, please feel free to send it to me at robin@lindenlab.com and I'll do my best to get it included.
