Philip,

At the time of this question being asked, there are 157,518 residents, according to the front page of the SL website. On average, there are 3-5,000 residents online now. My question is can we have an estimate as to how many actual residents we have? Minus the alts, lindens, inactive users (for example, haven't logged IW in a year or more). Is it possible to get a number like this?

Phillip,

I understand that Linden always plans to roll out new features to Estates first, and the Mainland second. However, the mainland seems to be perpetually "In the future" when it comes to development.

Are there features such as proactive anti-grief tools or the ability to determine what scripts are hogging resources in a sim that will be made available to the Mainland in the near-term future rather than the long-term?

While I try to be patient, at times it feels as though 'long-term' never comes.

Thanks!

Textures & Cache?
03-11-2006 23:14
Do you think it's possible to have Clients cache store textures that are quite common as it might help speed up the streaming process since there'd be no need to download the same textures over & over?

Maybe even have a texture database even?

Philip, is there any truth to the rumour that Linden Lab and/or Second Life is planning to cease operations at the end of March 2006?

Thanks.

Question for Philip Linden
03-12-2006 05:09
A lot of private sim owners desire access to open water for light-load recreational purposes, but the purchase options Linden Lab currently offers aren't financially viable on a small scale: either overengineered (and overpriced for this purpose) full-load single sims, or a four-pack of more appropriately-endowed (and suitably priced) 'void' sims.

Would Linden Lab consider offering such reduced-price 'void' sims for sale on an a-la-carte basis, one or two at a time, to allow private sim owners the same recreational opportunities afforded residents on the mainland?

Town Hall Meeting Question for Philip Linden
03-12-2006 05:13
I may not be able to attend the town hall meeting on March 16th so I am submitting my
question here just in case.

There seems to be a lot of concern about the topic of violent behavior vs. non-violent behavior in SL.

It seems to me to be a pretty easy problem to solve. I might be a little naive but could
there be a way for each citizen to make a choice at the beginning of each session they
log into that determines their behavior status throughout that session?

Violent vs. non-Violent without being allowed to change until their next session. On first
blush this may seem simple. But I think it would allow the fighters to have at it while others who are interested exploring the many creative activities and events in SL to do
so and not worry. This concept could be expanded on greatly with many variations.

It seems one of the main themes of SL is choice without fear. This is one of the reasons I choose to spend time here. The other way is how RL works. I could be wrong.

Thanks for your time and thanks for SL.

There have in recent times been serious problems with customer service. I won't go into them all, but I will mention one which seems to me to typify them. We were asked by the Lindens to provide feedback on the resmod programme. We did so, and the overwhelming majority felt that it should cease, and gave many succinct arguments as to why it should. The result? The resmod program continued as it was.

My question is: When are the Lindens going to do something about their poor standard of customer service?

When are we going to get a new user interface? It's a keystone of the usability but is years out of date and very unfriendly for new players.

Yes. I would like to hear the answer to this question. I live on a waterfront lot and can see the water expand for meters before me and can barely sail a meter of it. Between overhanging houses, security systems and lag I just look at the water and my dock and pray for open water.

Please make it easier for us sailors to have aplce to enjoy our sport. Thank you.

I also would like to see the answer to this question. Sounds like a mighty fine idea to me ;)

I also would like to see the answer to this question. It would do wonders for allowing private sim owners to create true islands with open water for the residents to enjoy, much like we have on the mainland to some extent.

I'd even go a step further to ask Linden Lab: Would you consider adding more void sims around the mainland to connect the void sims together, allowing residents a true open water experience instead of slamming into the sim borders or possibly hitting No Entry zones?

Philip, when's the last time you put any of those gold spinning things inworld that residents get L$ money from if they find them? Will you ever put them out again? They were fun and... shiny.

From the referral page:
----------------------------------------
If they sign up for a Premium Account, you'll get L$2500! We will credit your account according to the following schedule:

L$500 within 24 hours
L$500 at 30 days
L$500 at 60 days
the final L$1000 at 90 days.

The payments will only be granted provided that both Referrer and Referree are still members.
----------------------------------------
So how long has it been since they went premium? And are you sure you havent been paid the initial L$500 and the 30 day L$500?

Much like GOM?

Exactly like GOM. :) Do you not agree that it would greatly benefit the whole community if users could make purchases through SL.com with the convenience of not having to register with and trust a third-party? That was Philip's argument in favour of usurping currency exchange. Why haven't they done the same thing with shopping?

When will we get shopping included in the interface? Since classifieds are already included, it should be fairly simple to add a "buy now" button to make sales much more convenient. This would be of real benefit to the community at large. And while we're at it, why not add in a web-based shopping portal as well?
You know, I love this idea and have from the very beginning, before any of the independent SL shopping sites sprung into operation. If the Lindens truly want to encourage content providers to provide more and better content, this would seem obvious as a next step in facilitating uniform access to the best (or cheapest, or targetted according to specific wants/needs, or whatever the user seeks) content in SL. The Lindens have, in the past, held dear the notion that users should be allowed to provide and profit from services if feasible, but obviously this notion was thrown out the door when the GOM-like service was developed (usurped?) by LL.

So, here's my question: Are any plans in the works within LL to develop a Linden-run catalog of SL shopping, allowing content providers to offer their goods/services for sale to the public, that would be either or both built into the SL UI or/and accessible through the SL website, to ensure better access for users and more exposure for content creators than what is currently available on disparate private shopping sites?

When will you connect the navigable void water sims on the mainland?
03-12-2006 15:01
In the far southeast continent, you have created a series of islands surrounded by water. However, there is not a continuous ring of protected not-for-sale water sims around this continent, so people boating or flying aircraft contend with security scripts, ban lines and obstructive builds. When will you connect the protected water sims you already have in place, so that we have the infrastructure to use our boats and planes properly? If you want resident-created content and events, you need to provide at least some infrastructure to support us. Give us navigable water, please.

We know that void sims are much much less expensive to provide than regular sims. Linden Labs left out the roads and other transportation infrastructure in the southeast continent. Can you provide at least a ring of navigable water to an area with land designed specifically to appeal to a marine/boating community? This issue applies to the other mainland continents as well, but the need is acute in the southeast continent, as the formerly open water gets clogged with builds, ban lines, and security scripts...and we don't have any roads. The payoff is the greatest here too, since a few more void sims will make it possible to navigate around the continent independent of the whims of specific landowners.

Specifics:
1.) Link protected water Daebeom-Pulsori with Byeolgwadal-Garam-Nana by putting one sim east of Danbi

2.) link the existing protected water sims Daebeom-Pulsori to Haneulgil, with a one sim east of Haneulgil

3.) Link protected water in Cheongdam-Jilseo-Sandeulbaram-Banpo-Tal-Jinju-Dongbaekmaeul-Neulchan-Daseuri with Haengbok by putting one sim west of Haengbok and one north of Cheongdam

Steps 1-3 use 4 void sims to consolidate the existing navigable water on the east and west side of the continent. These two areas can be links by adding 7 protected water sims: north of Haengbok, west of Sanchon, north of Haneulgil, north and northeast of Yongchon, north and northwest of Sanchon.

Dear Philip,

(1) Quick hitting on my woman. I saw Phoenix Psaltery's post! And I know people in San Fran! ;)

(2) My RL gut slider is broken. What do I need to do to fix it? I have a 3.6 ghz machine, w/3 gigs of PC4200 ram, and 80 gig 7200 rpm drive, and an nVidia 6800 ultra. I'm pretty sure that's not why my RL gut slider is broken, therefore, it MUST be the SL software, as you can see. Please tell me why I can't instantly flatten my tummy on my current hardware. I'm tired of SL's customer service team telling me it "must be my RL hardware" or something like that I can't understand. I want to know, IN ENGLISH, why my gut continues to expand as I get older. My FPS is fine, yet my RL gut expands, no matter how little I work out. Thanks in advance for your easy-as-a-slider answer I expect in advance for my $next-to-zilch I pay you per month.

(3) (oh, this one is for real) - Please give us an update on when we can expect improved internal communications and privacy controls - IE, ability to choose our availibity level, IM cap limits, and so forth.).

Looking forward to the town hall - and thanks for meeting with us!

Regards,

-Flip

Recreational Areas
03-12-2006 15:54
My question goes along with some of the previous posts. Why cannot large recreational areas be provided for the use of all residents for activities such as sailing, flying, land based acticities etc. I have travelled the roads and the train service and I think they are a great idea that has been allowed to lapse. Provided the facilities to get people enjoying themselves and encourage manufacture of usable items that are a pleasure to use instead of a chore and the whole game benefits. Having empty sims stuck whilly nilly around the place seems a total waste.
