they are not being advised to infiltrate. I just joined the forums, and granted, many of them are not the most friendly chaps, but infiltrate and grief, nah

they are just being told basic things in that same thread on how to build and have fun (and making fun of things that are pretty stupid in SL)

the writer of that crap rag is correct, u should read the thread it to see how skewed and "creative" the harold is. thankfully there is metaverse messenger, they seem to have heve heard about including facts in thier stories.

Im new on SA forums, so point me in the right direction. I was called (slang for homosexual) many times and some nice W Hats sent me SL forum PMs and told me to lurk and read goldmine to get a feel for ettiquette so as not to to be flamed for every post, so I am, but that damn thread is pretty epic and engaging.

Tell me some other good ones. those SA forums put SLs forum to waste, despite what the self proclaimed forum gods here may beleive

There's nothing to agree with or disagree with. I simply posted a link. A link to something I did not write.

Although, I do feel that the way that description plays out is more or less the same manner in which I hear some folks excuse bigoted speech (RL and SL).

Example:

"Well my <best friend><some of my best friends><my ex-girlfriend/boyfriend> <etc.> is <insert ethnicity, sexual orientation, etc., here>."

I have seen Hats and Goons use this excuse with regards to furries: "But, but, but - there are furries in W-hat!", as if it excuses the remarks some of them make about furries.

Say something derogatory, and then follow it up with something nice like, "They're not all that way.", "I have friends who are...", or "Some of them are really talented.", etc. I find that rationale to be a load of crap. So do most people I know who are members of minority groups. All the subsequent nicey-nice talk in the world doesn't negate the fact that a W-Hat leader said that "pretty much" all SLers are "fags".

The above opinion (yes, I realize it's an opinion) is a mindset which I feel is presented often by these folks, although usually not as direct as in the above instance. At any rate, this attitude speaks volumes, at least to me.

The Herald is the National Enquirer of SL. Anyone getting their information about SL from them are woefully misinformed.

Nevertheless, after having an account in the SA forums for over a year, I was finally banned today. Probably because i defended myself from being called a "fag" twenty times by the resident six year olds. I was banned for not "knocking that shit off", while the other folks got to continue to run around. Whatever.

Or is that W-hat-ever-a-burger? Eh.

Regardless, there's no conspiracy of ruining SL coming from the SA forums. It's 60,000 kids going "OMFG WHAT IS THAT" all at once and signing up with free accounts. They've been doing this for over a year.

Keep in mind the average demographic of SomethingAwful is 13-24 year old males with a lot of computer experience. Combined with their warped sense of humor, they're slightly more annoying than your random troll; mostly because there's potentially 60,000 of them.

And by the way, if you continue to read that trainwreck of a thread, you see the allegation/fact/whatever that the lovely kid that crashed the grid is playing again, another free account.

As a final parting shot, know this: When Second Life becomes as successful as SomethingAwful, the SL forums will look just like that.

the sad thing about SA forums is u essentially got banned for signing your post (and i got reamed for that too)

however, there are some genuinly nice people there. i was helped by some people from SA in private PMs who I wont mention lest they be flamed too.

and lordfly, i think you give SL too much credit expecting it to be as succesful as SA. SA doesnt screw the customer base as frequently as LL (nor charge as much). and yes, OL is indeed back in game on an unknown account.

but needless to say, the harold shit rag flat out lied about the contents of the thread. I can take shit talking far more easily than total lies from asswipes like the harold who pretend to be a "news source"

the SA folks just want to have their fun their way. it may be immature and vulgar, but I stand by my thesis that unless they ruin the game for others, more power to them. people take themselves too seriously in SL and the organized chaos W-Hat brings might knock some of the forum pricks here off their high horse

Nolan, I think a good many SL forum posters exhibit this trait even if not spoken so bluntly(you and I included) and if you disagree fine, but most people think everyone else is dumber than themselves anywhere, it is human nature.

I don't think anyone is "dumber" than me. As a matter of fact, I think that a lot of forum regulars and some Goons/W-Hats are probably smarter than me. I just think that it's a shame that some folks choose to use that position to deride others.

Well well, I won't be so kind. Stupid is as stupid does. Nolan may think they are smarter but misdirected, but I think they are idiots that have a niche knowledge. Smart on some subjects? Sure. Well rounded and smart when it really counts? Not a chance.

A twisted sense of humor, while amusing for sure, doesn't mean you are smart. Quoting facts and knowing how to crash a computer system doesn't equate to smart. Being a butthole doesn't mean you have a high IQ. I'm by no means a computer-wiz, though I know my way around them well, and I would crush most of these twerps in a head-to-head IQ exam. These are the types that end up on COPS going "Huh?, Wha? It's..umm..my cousins car".

There is nothing admirable, honorable, or even desirable about being a friggin a-hole. It's very easy to become one, if that's your ambition. It's far, far tougher and takes far, far more work to be a good and decent and honest person. Far more work.

The easy way out is to make fun of, and belittle others. It has always been that way. But walk a mile in their shoes, I dare you.

Moms and dads all over the world have made the PC a babysitter. They are often job-focused and instant gratification focused. They often have a hard time thinking of others before thier own plans and dreams and satisfaction. Boo hoo.

SA is a symptom of a larger disease. They are lost and insecure children, proving themselves in the only way they know how. They are the tide that would turn and run at the first charge of strong opposition. They are the ones that would follow a fell and brutal leader into the small, defenseless village to plunder and kill. They are the ones that would wet themselves when facing a truly noble and brave foe.

I scoff at the lot of them, and anyone that defends them, even though I'm sure there are a few decent and well-rounded folks amongst the mob. You are the company you keep. Stand fucking up and think for yourselves. As much as I like sheep, I prefer them four-legged and wooly.
