No, see. This kind of thing never happens. Ask anybody. Even claiming or hinting that it does is doomsaying. So silence! Those here relating their experiences are making them up because they are anti-voice whiners. Even though they are using voice and that makes little or no sense. And they are also gender benders. They all have something to hide, I swear it! They probably have never used voice - they just thought they did. As a matter of fact I can't even hear what they're saying...

/me plugs her ears and closes her eyes "LALALALALALALALA!"

Ask anybody. ;-D

Well, like it or not, voice is coming. Will it be the "de facto" method of communication? Nah. Doubt it.

Where I see it used is with friends, or in IM with someone, teaching, and a few other places.

One time when I used it, I discovered one person WASNT female, and another had a Speech Impediment. On another occaision, I realized a person was male trying to sound female. Didnt bother me.

Or maybe I'm one of the few who come into things without expecting a person to sound like their avatar looks?

Another aspect of voice that is lost in text: Inflection.

It's sure taking it's time. Stanley found Livingstone quicker than Voice is getting to the General Population.

LOL! Yea.

Betcha they keep it in "First Look" for a while, then like Windlight, they pull it out saying "Oops!! Wasnt Ready!".

Still- I'll take Havok 4, and HTML-on-a-Prim over Voice Any Day!;)

I honestly don't care what gender someone is IRL, all that matters to me is what act as in SL. If your a cute tiny female cat furry then thats who i see you as. If a voice changer makes you feel better about how your character should sound, then by all means do it. I know i will be using one. n.n people who look down on me for it aren't worth talking to anyway. :)

and as for HTTP on a prim, Havok 4, windlight, and the other things i can't remember, that LL promised us all this time... i don't think we wil be getting them till SL is version 2.0. Which is another thing we won't be getting for a long time. :p

It seems a good amount of people like to use voice changers. A lot of them are REALLY annoying. Yes you can mute the person, but if it's someone you like and they won't remove it. Muting them isn't really that good of an option to me. This also opens the gates to underage kids that can still use voice and sound like they're over 18. I suggest that LL bans the use of voice changers within SL.

That would be like taking away free speech. I just imagine every time I make fun of someone in RL and I make some stupid voice that is supposed to make me sound like that person, but doesn't really. Try taking THAT away from people.

I think while we're on the subject we should ban people that speak with pretend accents too, say 'Z' as "zed" and not "zee", and of course, people who talk in unnatural speeds or pitches instead of talk normally for them.

:D

Why not just ban everyone who uses voice chat or types? then nobody would argue. :p (is joking i dont really want anyone banned unless they cause problems for a lot of people).

So, wait, you think banning voice modulators is a GOOD idea because you can speak, but not write Spanish?

for those lucky ones that already have or can afford a soundboard compatible with the KX driver, it is possible to have a voice changer that could only be detected if one target anyone with such drivers, and it won't eat up cpu cause with kx driver you can reprogram yoru sound board, that is how I have my voice changer]

it is a very simple one, and not of the best quality, but I've recorded myself and heard it and it sounds the way I want it, what I did was simply re-mix my voice being pitch shifted by 3 different ammounts, and each "track" with the volume tuned to achieve an understandable voice that still sounded how I wanted, and with the default plugins one could get much better result than I did if one sacrifice other features (there s a bunch of stuff on the default setup to cover most uses, but they eat up memory on the sound board, so to get more complex combinations of stuff you want you need to delete some stuff you won't need), and one can even write their own "plugins" if they have the skill and time to learn the language

now about the main topic, people can ban voice on their land, if you don't want to be have people talking with voice around you, go elsewhere, I bet once it gets on the main client there will be tons of people banning voice on their land

ps:technicly they don't ban voice users, they just disable voice

erm, wait, I've just realized I've missed the point, voice changers, they not only should be allowed but should also be encouraged, if someone sounds so bad no one understand them, they will eventually give up or try to tune their voice better, if you can't convince a friend to stop using voice changers, if they are really your friends they should tolerate you muting their voice, if not them they aren't your friend enough and you can just move on

And it killed my dawg!!! And banned Gambling!!! And almost banned ageplay!!! :D

Bleh- I think it'll ruin SL about as much as a ban on gambling. ;)

There are MORE things to worry about, such as the "age verification" they planned on. THAT is what I refuse to side with. Sorry... in this day & age of ID Theft and the selling or losing of personal information, asking for Social Security numbers, addresses, etc, is just not something I'm willing to part with.

My voice? Yea- you can hear it all you want!! Or not! Heh- I'll talk to just about anyone. Even if I sound like a 'dork'.:)

Ummm.... let me see - trying to enforce something like this would be impossible.

And... if someone you like won't get remove the voice changer... umm... maybe you might want to consider that you shouldn't like them, and muting is okay? It's a personal choice. Me... like me as I am... whether I use a voice changer or not.

Kids are kids are kids no matter what the voice sounds like. What they're saying is always a give-a-way.

just becarefull to not mistake a skillfull age player or someone that likes to do kid stuff like compalining about certain types of things, talking non-sense, over-reacting when ofended etc, adults have the right to act and sound childish in SL just as long as they don't break any rule, and many people don't live close enough to LL's hq nor have access to international credit cards and stuff and it might be quite hard for them to prove they are not a kid (from the stories I've been hearing from several different sources LL will shoot frst and ask questions later when it comes to stuff like ARs about someone being underage and stuff like that..)

... but voice in SL works just like the rest of SL...
08-06-2007 03:55
... namely, a few hours after it was officially introduced, the system went down for 48 hours ;)

And although I had tested things before the merger of the First Look Viewer with the main viewer, and the quality was acceptable, as soon as this was working grid-wide with everybody connecting to the voice servers, the quality degraded to the usual level of service as the rest of SL: namely, it works, but barely so, and not all the time :)

Usual conversation when meeting someone new:

Them: *Garble*
You: Hi there!
Them: *Garble sputter phew* Hi *Garble*
You: Hello!
Them: *Garble chuckle* bzzzt *garble garble*
You (typing): Back to text chat I guess?
Them (typing): Yes, I guess that voice isn't working.

:)

so far i've only had issues that were either caused by my own computer or by the computer of other people, the system itself seems to work quite well, probably if I had a freshlly re-formated hd with just windows and sl installed and the same thing with the people that I met that are having issues with it, and having everyone involved have the latest drivers and the appropriate hardware and internet connection required to run sl and voip apps I think we wouldn't be having any issues, but it is possible that we just aren't noticing the system flaws cause we endup not using it enough....
