It seems a good amount of people like to use voice changers. A lot of them are REALLY annoying. Yes you can mute the person, but if it's someone you like and they won't remove it. Muting them isn't really that good of an option to me. This also opens the gates to underage kids that can still use voice and sound like they're over 18. I suggest that LL bans the use of voice changers within SL.

I simply can't support that idea at all... It's so "let's take away everyone's right to do something cause a very few lame jackasses might possibly do something bad with it"...

Beside my emotional objection to your suggestion, it's impossible to enforce.

Why are they annoying? Because you are paranoid that someone is "hiding" their real voice? And underage kids are Ok as long as they can text only.? That's one of the most asinine things I've read here yet. So you want to deny a "Good amount of people" something becuase it annoys you. And as Robby said, How do you enforce it? Even I, an ardent anti voicer wouldn't support that nonsense.

A good number of people also like to use unrealistic avatars, some of them are really offensive, best ban all non RL based avatars........

Yes, let's ban them, as well as nicknames. Let's force everybody to use their real names, send their ID to Linden Lab, and have them pay a small fee to get realistic avatars that look like yourself and that you can't ever change again.

I actually like this idea.

Oh wait, no I do.

Even if I did, exactly how would you go about banning a voice-changer? People will do as they will, and as it was said before, hiding that they are a kid? They could just turn voice off and hide as easy as that. Bad idea, in general. If you don't like them, your only option is to either suck it up, or mute them.

They could just ban voice altogether, that would take care of those pesky people with their voice changers :p.

If they're friends of yours and they still won't stop it even if you ask then, maybe they shouldn't be your friends?

Wow....................................................

In the threads about voice coming to SL several people said "only if they implement an in-client voice change would I use it."

I find the entire "underage" comment a red herring. Most Human's voices have changed to a lower range before age 18. My 15 year old son speaks several registers lower than my 35 year old brother.

You dont define what else you mean by annoying? I could guess bad sound quality since examples given do seem to sound terrible.

----------------------------
If its just a grating or irritating voice thats the issue - why not just ban people who have annoying voices? Say have 10 residents vote and if someoens voice is just too aggrivating - mute them for life.

lets not beat around the bush - lets just force all people who wish to continue to play Second Life to move to some supposed Utopia island somewhere IN PERSON.

It sure seems to be a common problem, huh? One I honestly don't understand, quite frankly. I mean, I'm strictly hetero, but if I was into pixel sex (which I'm not), I can only imagine that the experience would be strictly driven by the fantasy and not some paranoid worry about the other person's RL gender.

Who the hell cares whether it's "really a male" in such a case? Shit, I'd rather not know :)

Maybe part of it is not just it's another guy, but WHO it could be. Your best friend, your 6th grade teacher, that wierd guy in the house down the street with the darkend windows and old cars in his backyard, your Congressman......

Brenda you did NOT have permission to repeat Ronin's horror story.

How was he supposed to know that Hot Guy AV he picked up in the gay bar was actually his RL Mother?

A ban to voice changers would be just one more reason not to use voice altogether... next to the five or six I already have.

Hmmm... An alternative would be a full text-to-speech synthesis...? Yes, that would be about the only voice option I may consider using.

HAHAHA

First all the fuss about introducing voice (which was a bad idea to begin with) and now it even goes on to ban voice changers. What a stupid idea to stack on top of a stupid feature.

Personally, I'd just as soon ban voice entirely. But using Voice with a voice changer is the ONLY way I would ever consider using it. Why? Because I play an even split of male and female avatars, and most of them are not Human. All of them would have voices completely wrong for the character in question if I couldn't alter my voice in some way, and I am simply NOT a good enough voice actress to change my own voice to fit all of them. In text, Ceera can have a sultry feminine voice with both Japanese and French accents, that sounds appropriate coming from a female red fox. I can describe that in text. I don't think I could come close in RL with a headset mike, her voice is an octave lower than mine and I can't blend the foreign accents when I speak. Another of my characters is a male of Scottish heritage. I can type in a lovely rich Scottish Brogue, but that kilt-wearing man would sound pretty silly as a soprano female with a Texas accent. Another of my characters is an anthro wolf. Tell me what she should really sound like when she speaks, and we'll both know. I'd probably have the voice changer add a bit of a subvocal growl to her voice when she talks...

Imagine watching a movie, and hearing your favorite sexy actress or hunk movie star stud open their mouth, and sound like Pee Wee Herman, or Jackie Chan, or Darth Vader.... If the voice doesn't match what the character should be like, it completely blows the effect. So for anyone who has sufficient creativity and imagination to want to play avatars that are not carbon copies of their RL self, a voice changer would be mandatory equipment if they want to use voice in SL. (I happen to like Jackie Chan and James Earl Jones as actors, but I wouldn't want to hear either of their voices coming from the face Lucy Lawless or Bernatette Peters.)

Ban voice changers in SL? Heck no - make it *mandatory* when you use Voice, and part of the Voice UI!

You want to see and hear the real person? Buy a web-cam and hook up with them via Skypie, or some other web conferencing service, and deal with the real person that way.
