Some nice photoreal skins -
CMFF
Naughty
Exotica
RAC

Some nice more painted style skins
Nomine
Canimal
Nevermore

A good one thats sort of in between-
Celestial.

Id recommend finding a skin first - it might be you like the shape you already have a lot more with a new skin.

Some good shapes stores

Haver Cole
Torrid Midnight
Nomine has shapes also
Naughty has shapes also
RAC has shapes also

I sell shapes as well. But whether they would be "the best" would be pretty subjective

I love the skin I'm currently in...

Toffee from Nora (Sonata 194 61, 30) It comes with drawn on hair, so I am never bald after I TP! I have a detachable ponytail and pig tails that came with the skin. The skin is soft and natural. She sells all ethnicities.

Before I bought Toffee, I loved my Vogue skin from Celestial Studios. ( Celestial City 68, 240, 27). Be prepared to get weary, very weary, trying on the demos at CS...there are so many variations to choose from! But the quality is first rate.

Its weird how some skins make you look pretty and some don't. Demo, demo, demo before you buy!

The whole thing's pretty subjective.

Fleur (formerly Tete a Pied) is another nice one and they're running a promotion right now that, if you join their update group, you can get a free skin.

I am bumping you to an 8.5 on the Official Trout Measuring Instrument of Sluttiness. You are an enigma - on the one hand a sweet, gentle, intelligent woman who we would like to wrap up in our arms and protect, and on the other, a temptress to whom we would like to do all sorts of unmentionable things.

Congratulations and shame on you! You are a bit of a slut.

I have a RaC skin and a very slightly modified shape from Adam and Eve. Still have not found THE hair for me yet but my current one is from Naughty Designs
My old build mule (female) had skin and hair from Jollie Femme and a heavily modified shape from RaC but the face of the shape was untouched.

I helped a RL friend get herself set up a few months ago. We went with an Exotica skin and RaC's shape; we made much the same shape mods we did with my build mule except for some reason my friend did not want anything larger than C cups. She changes hair wih every outfit so that wony be much help.

Since then I have helped several people with top end skins and shapes. Mostly skins from RaC or Exotica. One of them is wearing a freebie skin and a shape set from Alady (no mod shapes but have different sized butts in one pack for skirt or pants) and i swear that if no one told you the skin was free you would never think it was anything less than a 5K L$ skin.

Another one insisted on a skin and a shape she wanted, spent the top end price for both and they look like crap together. Yes, she has the best skin in the game. She also has the best shape money can buy. She would have done better at any one of dozens of very good places that sell complete AV's.

The point is, getting the best is only the first step. Getting the shape, hair and clothes to make it look the best should never be underestimated. It really is that important.

I hate both of those. :)

Personal taste varies widely. Demos demos demos.

Drat -- I missed that news! Fleur, eh? I'll have to go look around the store again. I currently own about a half-dozen Vivant skins and several of the old, retired line. Love her skins.

That was a fun experience... not.

I was subjected to more verbal abuse in five minutes at the new Fleur store than I have been during the entire last year in SL. Obviously, I don't get out much, and I'm a little stodgy, but being told to "stfu" and called "bitch" and "dumbass" by customers in the milling crowd was a... different experience than usual.

From what I could see, some of the new skin offerings are geared to a young crowd. Which may account for the unruly manners.

Not my cup of tea anymore.

I was bounced and banned, there were tons of other people bouncing too, I suspect some sort of grief attack.

Wow, really? There were quite a few people there earlier, but no one was acting like that. o.O

There were a couple of new skins to the right of the entrance which were kind of cutesy, but the Vivant skins are still there if you go straight back.

Um, I don't know if this helps at all, but there's also a group sale at Shiny Things.

I got a quick look at the skins, but the group of people who abused me at the entrance to the store were quickly dispersing through the interior and I just left rather than become the brunt of more abuse or just listen to them cuss and spew insults at other people.

Come to think of it, I do get out a lot shopping and this is the first time I've encountered a group of people who found it so amusing to act so horribly rude.

I find it hard to recommend skins and shapes, cuz there are soooo many different ones

and I would love to know some lesser known sellers such as myself, then I would start recommending ppl

as it stands the well known, keep getting better known

hopefully you will find what you want
(which reminds me, I got to get those kid skins on slex)

hey mari if you are reading this thread, would you do me a huge favor when you have time.
I respect your opinion, and would love it if you would have a peek at the new kids part of my store and let me know what you think (not a lot there yet, just some avatar packs and shoes and couple hairs) hehe
furniture and such but not set to sell yet (furniture I mean)

would love to get a kids point of view, is it easy to see, easy to navigate, appealing?
(ps I know you are not a kid in RL, you know what I mean by a kid's point of view)

I just bought my first skin today, and it was from Fluer. I wish I knew about the groups sale. And that explains why i had to wait to TP in.

Anyway I chose Fleur because it's the only male skin I found that didn't come with a sixpack abs. I think it's going to be harder finding hair.

The best shape is free because you can make it yourself. :) Spend a little time with your sliders and you will see.

I have a Tuli skin which was free and it's the best I have found in SL but it all depends on what you are looking for. There is no good answer to this question.

Houses are free too, if you make them yourselves. As are scripted objects, animations, clothes, and just about everything else you buy. They're all cheaper if you make them.

On the other hand, you get what you pay for.

Some people really have no idea how to make a pleasing human avatar shape. The results can be cringe-inducing. I love making shapes, so I make my own (and sell them too). But I tried my hand at building my own house, and I suck at architecture, so now I buy my houses. And my furniture, clothing, hair.

The fortunate resident recognizes their own limitations and makes use of someone else's talent to fill in the gaps. I don't know why people pick on shapes as the one bought item to rag on, but it gets discouraging to hear the same mantra over and over again from people who happily buy everything else they use in SL.

I see the store bought shapes and cringe daily myself. While I admire your passion I really do feel that anyone with a little patience can create a nice shape without having to buy one. Creating a nice shape is not the same as learning how to build and create houses.

a few unmentioned stores MM Skins...and Viper Skins. My newest skin is from Viper..The Abyss also has nice "painted" skins. CMFF is the first skin creator in SL(im 99% sure of that fact) and he's a guy who will give customer service as good as he can.

Not for sure what was going on with fleur but i have heard thru MM Skins that a bunch of their stuff had been copy botted and they're on a campaign to make sure the "thief" doesn't sell their stock..prolly not the same place.

Also if you will simply join the MM skins group..you can look thru group notices and find a free female skin they give away..its really quite good..for free.

I've found that some avatars need to be built around certain skins for them to look good...while other skins are quite forgiving of the current SL avatar dimensions.

Just a thought.

It is true that a lot of people who could probably make their own shape end up buying them,

There are others who are not inclined that way.

People without experience tend towards exaggeration. Giant boobs, giant hips, super-tiny waists, wide butts, super-long legs. Spend enough time around newbies and the bodies by Matel and you'll see what I mean.

Most people who do their own shapes take months and months before they start to develop it towards what they really want, spending a couple hundred Lindens to possibly speed up the process isn't really so bad.

I'm seeing more and more "big boned" gals in world and this makes me so happy!
Attractive heavy avatars..I think it's wonderful and i really hope that the "big boned gal" market opens up more.

Ive seen less heavy men but would be nice to see that too.
