If you're not sure which type of skin you'd like, try joining several skin creator's groups. Many send out free group gifts periodically and it's a good way to get a look at their style before you buy.

My current favorite is a group gift from Iki's Dutch Touch. It has some of the best detail that I've seen-beautiful collarbone, 'butt cleavage', knees-areas that a lot of skinners don't pay much attention to.

Some other frequent group gifters:
Tulli
Skin Within
Chai
Fleur/Tete a Pied
MMSkins(sends some great guy freebies)

As far as shapes, I can't imagine buying one unless you just don't have the patience to fiddle with sliders. The shapes that come with Eloh's Another Shop skins are a good starting point if you like a more realistic look(I do). They're modifiable, so you don't have any twins rezzing around.

As for the men - I really wish there were some more skinny ones about but all I see are huge schwarzenegger types - MASSIVE shoulders and pecs. It's boring. I'd love to see a skinny lad with a bit of a belly, that'd be cute

Yes! Exactly! It drives me crazy. Most men look like if you put an egg shaped head on them, they could have walked right out of Area 51. Probably OK if you are going for the "I just walked out of the circus" look. But tiny waists and huge chests? I've seen gay art that look likes that, but not much more.

And what is up with everyone being 100 feet tall? My avie is 6 feet and EVERYONE towers over me. I'm always talking to women's boobs. And not on purpose

Here's a link to a snapshot of my avie's upper half. I tried to make it good looking, but also in a way that was actually possible in the real world. Aesthetically, I think its better than looking like a caricature of a human. You think?

Then there are the women. Small waists, huge boobs, and massive hips and butts. Geez, I'm all for some junk in the trunk, but how much junk do you have to have in there? An entire landfill?

I guess I just don't understand why someone would search for "photo realistic" skins and then put them on unrealistic bodies? Makes no sense to me.

LOL good point I've noticed that since my early days in SL .. some of the most unrealistic people were the most concerned about having the most realistic skins.

I am looking for a good quality male skin... time for a change

However whilst there seems to be a glut of female skins available, the male ones seem either hard to find or all a little "samey" ... anyone have any suggestions where I can look?
