The Forums would be a lot more popular if there were just one Linden who had success of the Forums as even one objective, and we'd surely know the plans and schedule for the new software. But whenever a Linden gets a Forums assignment, they're immediately distracted by some other shiny task. (From personal experience: managing researchers is like herding cats. I sense that managing Lindens is like herding lolcats.)
Agreed. And isn't there this Mantra of Linden (Tantra? Karma? whatever ...) thing which allows them to do what they want? So I guess nobody wants to miss out on points on the Love Machine by getting bad vibes from the "fractious user base" which sometimes tends to be more outspoken here than in other places ...

I would miss them. When I have a problem or question I cannot get the answer to anywhere else...this is where I come. This forum is a gold mine of valuable information.

I'm also stuck in an office all day and I read here during my breaks.. especially since it is usually snowy, icey and/or a below zero temp outside. There are several times that I have found myself laughing out loud over something I have read here. I love to laugh:)

I would definitely miss the forums. I barely post myself, just tend to lurk lol, but have found out so much more about how SL works from all the people in here than actually being in world. I think the information gathered here is invaluable and the forums should be recommended to everyone that joins SL. Also I would miss the banter between certain folks ;)

You know, i read somewhere that really teh middle letters of a word dont mean much to teh brain but teh first one and last one do. They make teh connection. Its somethign to do with the synapse or whatever its called. (No sure about the last sentence of this but it sounded kinda liek teh stuff I say in real to my friends. So its really a real Jig thing).

And I look for the secret signs of teachers here. I swear you are all hiding soemthing.

OMFG....would you PLEASE run a spell check? Seriously, Jig, I'm about to put you on ignore just because reading your posts gives me a headache.

Yes, I'd definitely miss the forums.

Some of the people? Um, not so much.

This forum is one of the few permanent bookmarks on my home page. The others are all work related. For all their faults, forums can be the best way to find information about a subject or community and are easily the best way to judge the culture (warts and all). There are better ways to organize information but forums are immediate, familiar and connecting in ways that wikis, knowledge bases and even blogs are not.

The actual usage of a forum is always greater than the active posters, a lot of people will search for content find it and leave. -- or lurk and never post.

If you create any content, your Second Life experience breaks out of the 3d space. I probably have spent as much time in Photoshop creating textures as inworld building with them. The forum is a way to stay connected to what's happening "inside" when you cannot be. There is a wealth of information here, I seldom top post because my questions have already been answered. This forum (and some other SL related lists) keeps me interested in Second Life. That, in turn, keeps my monthly SL expenses justifiable.

I would miss them. What I would miss most is when you get [size][size] written all through your post when you don't want it.

This is a very good point. Now that all SL uers can log on, many more could be coming here than we think, just not posting anything.

I would definitely miss the forums for the same reasons stated- stuff learned, questions answered almost instanteneously, friendly banter, social interaction- etc, etc.

For the record, Jig's spelling or lack thereof doesn't usually bother me in the least- when on occassion it does- I just glance over it and move on. What does bother me is the incessant going on about how people in the Cartel shouldn't post (more or less the sentiment if not the actual statement as I interpret it). If something bothers me I JUST DON'T READ IT! Like the guy with the slut magazine porn crap- annoying as hell to me, can't figure out why some of you seem to like him- I will never find out if I would like him (doubtful) because his posts require a Rosetta stone and I do not have the patience or desire to decipher such blithering idiocy anyway.

Anyhoo...

The forums have been my way of getting SL when I can't get SL. I have an account 'over there' and post on the SLU forums too. But, to me, THIS is the SL forum. (>_<;)

I've been through forum migrations before, where the admin/owner made some epic silly decision that nearly completely alienated the community. As a result, some made their own, some found other hosts, and people wandered off to other services. It's never the same, but, we've kept our connections. The same can happen here too. (^_^)

Tao =) It used to say "choose your own work" but they took that out with the new management.

This forum is my main way to stay in touch with the people I can't see in world. I suppose if this forum ceased to be, I would follow them to another place.

It would be a shame to lose the the resident-based help though. Under all of the recent dramahz this is still the best place to ask honest questions, and receive quick, helpful answers.

Yes, for a variety of reasons, I would miss the forum if it were to cease to exist. Although I don't post in the forum a lot, I do see the value of the forum as a whole. The various sub-forums contain a wealth of information that would otherwise be more time consuming to obtain.

I do think that the forum would have better potential for being properly maintained and moderated if there were a larger percentage of Second Life residents who actually used this provided service. It still amazes me how many people I come across on a weekly basis, many of which have been in Second Life as long, or longer than I, that are completely oblivious to the fact the Second Life forum even exists. I am met by the same question more than not, "Second Life has a forum?". In my own opinion, there is something inherently wrong with that picture.

Normal companies would call it an employee recognition system, but LL is special.

On the offhand chance that a Linden will glance at this thread, I wearily admit that I would miss the forums were they to either disappear, or move to a format nonconducive to discussion, such as Yahoo Answers. (wearily because I've been so vocal on the forum's value for so long).

In fact, were the forums to disappear, my ties to SL would weaken significantly. I would feel somewhat lost without the easy access to archived knowledge (even using vBulletin's primitive search), and swift responses from skilled residents.

The Love Machine?

Here's the background from the LL article on Wikipedia:

From: Wikipedia
Further, employees are encouraged to use positive reinforcement as an incentive using an internally-developed "Love Machine" application that enables employees to publicly reward and praise fellow employees for specific tasks completed. The "love" that is sent ultimately translates to a financial incentive at the end of each quarter and is used as part of an employee's evaluation. [...] "The Love Machine allows anyone who works here as a Linden employee to send anyone else a brief note that says 'Thank you for doing this for me.'," Rosedale told Inc. Magazine in 2008. "There is a little webpage where you can go to send an e-mail, and then you get a little e-mail that says 'Love From Philip' in the subject and it's got text in it. Now, you think, what's the big deal about that? Well, all of that stuff goes into a database. Your review carries that. Everybody is sending love to each other. It creates a positive collaborative environment."

I would definitely miss the content creation forums. I love helping new residents learn to build, script, and animate, and it's a lot easier finding those types in the forums than in the welcome areas.

I'd have to find somewhere else to waste my lunch hour.

P.S. I would venture a guess that Jig is purposefully misspelling words to irritate the few of you that she is at odds with... darned if it's not working. :P

She is obviously making a virtue out of necessity with her posturing regarding 'teh'.

I'd miss the forums and the contact it gives me with all my friiends. Even when I'm at home doing things that would prevent me from being on SL, I can scan the forums and keep up with things in the few spare moments I might have.

I don't get the "cartel members shouldn't post in the forums" thing? Am I misreading something or did I miss something? Why would anyone want to prevent members of the Forum Cartel from posting here. The Cartel is made up of some of the most prolific and helpful posters here. Or am I just completely missing something?
