Have you thought about quitting SL? What makes you think that?

I have always maintained I will leave when my partner leaves. He is in his later 60s in real and I think he really enjoys sl. If he ever lelft - for personal commitments in real, for example, then I would leave to. So in a real sense I have thought of quitting sl and have a plan for when I do so.

In another twist of my sl life, I have also maintained that if I was "killed" in sl I would also leave then. Treating sl as a place with a mortality or danger makes it more intense but I dont go looking for troble. It'll prolly be a griefer or some one I've pi**ed off. Who knows? I dont think people get shot or chopped as much as they used to when sl was more like Fort Laramie.

I am not at all concerned with teens as a reason to leave. I have much experience of them (BUT NOT as a parent or educator or social worker etc) and they simply dont worry me. I think if people just accepted that teens are really quite decent and fun then they may be surprised at how easy integration will be. Maybe its because I work so closely FOR their fun and enjoy doing what I do, my attitude is prejudiced in their favour. But I am not surprised at attitude of older people that seems to define teens as troublemakers and stupid hormone-defined fools. I was a teen not so long ago.

I nearly left SL when we nearly moved a little over a year ago. There was almost no time that was convenient to get in-world, and when I did I always felt as though someone was right over my shoulder. (We were staying with family, so frequently there was - ugh.)

At the end of last year, when my old reliable computer finally gave up the ghost, my husband rushed buying a new one and I ended up with an ATI graphics card that was not very compatible with SL and made the experience somewhat dreadful. I didn't leave then, but I wasn't very active then and might have left, had old friends not contacted me... Since then, my son's computer wore out and I got his hand-me-down nVidia card.

Suddenly, I can see again, I have a job again, and I'm building and landscaping again. I've been on a bit of a fantasy hair kick, and spending more lindens buying dances than I'm quite comfortable with. And yet, at some point I'm pretty sure I'll get bored with both of those and either find something new to explore or pull back for a while.

I guess either RL issues or ennui with SL could cause me to leave, but I'd probably just go dormant in case I felt like coming back. Having my friends leave might slow me down or even make me go dormant, too.

Conifer - SL was on tv? Was it an ad?

Yes it was on TV, no it wasn't an ad! I saw a short feature on a BBC news programme where they created an avatar for one of the reporters and showed some of what you could do in SL.

At the time I forgot the name of the 'game' but a month or so later I narrowed it down to Second Life after a bit of Googling and then I joined.

Problem number one: Who IS a teen?
Problem number 2,3,4,5,6,7,8,...: Who IS a teen?

Clearer?

It's not the billion teens who are AOK that concern me one bit. It's the lack of recourse to counter claims of impropriety. Who among us can even tell for sure the GENDER of someone else in SL? And you think we can be expected to set our mode of interaction to 100% pg because anyone on the grid might find ones actions (or words) offensive? And what makes you think that is any assurance that you'll not get accused of impropriety ANYWAY?

Since this reason has come up about 4 times now (me being one of them) I'm sincerely starting to feel like I should just leave now. Although my former partner and I attended events, we never created a circle of friends around us, and our closest friends (another couple) left SL as well after a breakup. (Well one did...the other may be "incognito.";)

I just keep thinking of the RL money I used to purchase things like my VKC dog, two AKK horses, etc. But, if SL is causing more sadness than joy...I guess in the scheme of things it's not as important.

the only thing i can think of that would get me to leave SL is if they officially allowed teens on the grid. I'm not here for money or relationships. It's all about being on the bleeding edge of the future. When that starts to include the pouty teens tantrums making false accusations there's no reason to stay.
Just as an aside, with two teens on the teen grid here, they seem to get on without drama just fine. In fact, orders of magnitudes far less drama than the adults.

Sure, there are bratty teens, but one of mine would just laugh at any questionable situation and leave, and the other would just leave ~ he likes quietly creating things and isn't terribly chatty.

No. I'm a SL documentarian and loves being in SL.

I don't plan to quit anytime soon. :p

Sounds interesting what does it entail exactly ?

I must be the only person who mentioned curtailing sl on financial grounds...Is everyone else here a 'freeloader' or just a lot richer than I am :p

Definitely not a freeloader. Maybe a cheapskate, at need. The only money I feel I *have* to put into SL is my annual membership, and in a pinch I could let even that go. I was lucky enough to save up some monetary gifts to help pay for the initial purchase of my land, and am currently able to put a few L$ in to pay the tier rental and have some spending cash - but if it comes down to it, I could dump the land, pick up a 512, and put in US$10-15 once in a blue moon to cover tips to venues/DJs/hosts and the few purchases I absolutely couldn't do without. Goodness knows I've lived my Second Life that way before.

Financial factors could cause me to scale down my activities, but I have too much else invested here to leave based on those grounds.

(Unless my financial situation was so dire I could no longer afford my internet service, or to replace my computer if it died. In which case SL would be very low on my list of priorities, except to let my friends know how to contact me and to tie up loose ends.)

I almost left about 6 weeks ago during a really really bad patch of harrassment and abuse from an ex. I didn't see the point in logging in to nasty IMs, vicious emails/notecards/ friend invites, nasty stuff about me on his profile and hearing about threats he was making to friends.

Or earning enough L$ in SL that they don't need to supplement them with US$.

Damn, that is when your finger should go all rapid fire Uzi style on the mute button.

People get one sentence with me, and at the first insult i stop reading, mute the person, close the window, archive the chat log and never look at it again. I have no need for that in my SL at all and once a person starts spitting ugliness at me via IMs and/or notecards i cut them off and never look back. And when friends come to me with "hey there is a thread about you at some place" or "hey so and so said such and such at...", i politely ask them to never again inform me of such things. If necessary, i will mute them temporarily if it helps preserve my peace of mind.

I hope you never have to deal with that sort of crap again and if you do, you just go all Uzi style on the mute button and be quick. Mute'em and forget'em.

Mute only works until the army of alts comes marching in!

The alts come marching one by one...hurrah...hurrah!

And Ceka, I did end up sending an AR in. No idea what, if anything, happened though.

The hatchet is buried now though and I am glad he is happy with his SL, just as I am with mine.

Send me an IM in-world, I'll drop one on you, or get one from anyone who has one. It's full perm... I modded it from a freebie gun because anvils, well... you know... anvils. :)

Might be in my freebie box, I don't recall now. If not it should be.

My honey has asked me to quit SL...but I just don't see it happening.

I'm not so much addicted to SL as I'm addicted to my friends.

Because if I wasn't on SL I'd be someplace else making friends.

Wouldn't it be nicer to send it to Czari rather than "dropping" one on her? :p

I have been dealing with the question lately myself. My partner of 2 1/2 years has little time anymore, and is hardly every on. It may come to pass that she will have no time and I will be alone. So I have given a lot of thought as to what would keep me coming here if not to be with her.

I have made some wonderful friends here, my RL work makes it hard to have much of a social life in the RL, so much of my social life is in SL. And so I have decided that even if my love cannot be with me here any longer I will end up staying. I will build, re-open my shop, visit with my friends, have a few wild times now and again. It will not be the same without her to share it with, but I believe I will still find something worthwhile here. But if I lose her, there will never be another partnership for me here. I will remain "single"

What will make me leave if ever is LL. They just don't seem to "get it". I have never seen anything so mis-managed as this. They seem to have a total disregard for their users. Most times it seems as if they would prefer that we all left so they could get on with whatever their real plans are.

If another virtural world comes along that has what makes Second Life so different then I would leave in a flash. Right now the other virtural worlds do not hold a candle to SL. Most are not what I would call a virtual world actually. More like 3D chat or facebook clones.

I do think it is only a matter of time before another "real" virtual world comes along. One that I hope is better managed.. At that point I will join the masses and leave for green pastures.
