The thing is, Cybin - there are plenty of us who do both, who are here for the whole range of experience and are also creative types - and we feel horribly threatened by this, because LL hasn't just changed the rules, they refuse to say, explicitly, what the rules are.

Very well said. The amount of time I've spent developing a character, sketching an environment, building a residence in-world that supports a cohesive backstory, are all threatened by such high-handed and frighteningly vague proclamations.

I feel trapped. I have never griefed anyone (except the one time I pelted my friend in the face with toilet paper). But now I stand to lose my primary source of personal income, one of my greatest social outlets and my friends. Why?

I agree. The only time anyone could accuse me of griefing would be the time I accidentally triggered my own push-enabled high-explosive and blew my avi onto someone else's parcel. After dusting myself off, I apologized profusely and we all had a good laugh.

That's what gets me - I have been orbited, harrassed, called names, run into minors and had people try to defraud me. And I have AR'd them dutifully, and they are STILL IN THE USER LIST, some of them a year later!

I have no real hope that I will be in the user list in a year.

And that fills my heart with a terrible sadness.

What is happening here, apparently unbeknownst to many, is that LL has just lumped in responsible, adult RP-er's into the same catagory as malicious griefers.
Add to that the comments of some obviously inflated egotistical snobs, and we're being told that OUR vision of what we'd like to enjoy in this virtual enironment is somehow not up to snuff.

Do you expect us to be filled with joy and happiness about that?

Especially when those of us who've actually read Snow Crash understand just where from the edgy, creative inspiration for the metaverse came.

The decision to issue such a broad announcement, AND couch it in a none-too-subtle call to arms for residents to fink on one another, is a betrayal of the intellectual, artistic, and personal freedom upon which this entire world was based.

Just like the "age verification" blog post, I expect several "clarification" posts over the next week or so, based on the various feedback LL have received.

It really is. And it's not being issued from The Linden HQ I suspect. There's been a coup, and there's a new Junta, Headquartered on Wall Street issuing the orders.

As a former Wall Streeter, I find your analogy broadly offensive. But then again, as a fellow-NYC resident, I find myself shrugging and going onto the next confrontation! LOL ;)

As for corporate cash, we can be for it (likened to people living in areas whose property taxes are lower than other areas due to corporations and local government facilities taking up most of the burden) or we can be against it (anti-white-shirt-ists as I like to call them....or.....just made up.....). In any event, that's going to be what it's going to be, regardless if I wave my arms around and scream ala "WTF IS WITH THAT R TRAIN GOING RIGHT THROUGH THE STATION".

As for the ultra vague LL Blog posting, I think Broccoli is probably right in that there will be clarification forthcoming.

The report thy neighbor thing has me disturbed, because I also believe, like many here, that it's going to be more personal than actual mature and reasonable resident policing of the stated community standards.

What anyone else does on the grid is up to them. As long as it's done within the realm of the rules on the adult grid by two adults, go for it and have a smoke for me, afterwards.

I would blatantly ignore the "fight nice" warning by the Mod, being the confrontational broad that I am, but it's a really nice, sunny day out there and I'm considering a cold beer with friends. Can I get a rain check?

Ah, but as a Former Wall Streeter, do you disagree with it? :p I'm actually a Former City resident now, but I hated the R train with a passion as well. Living in Flushing, then Woodside, the 7 Train was my primary Bane however. But you are right, it is what it is, or as Dad would say You can't polish a turd  and Ice Cream has no bones. (I never quite understood that one)

Well, hmmm

ice cream...no bones...don't have to be as careful eating it, as say...some fish...no...let's see..no backbone...so i wouldn't elect ice cream to repre...no....uhhh

it's probably just one of those things parents say that we find ourselves saying to someone else (younger) down the road who then asks "wth does that mean" to which we reply (with "kids sheesh" eyeroll) "oh for pete's sake, FIGURE IT OUT"

As for my Wall Street sensibilities, they're pretty much intact. So as long as there's some reasonable level of preferential treatment for those who pay more into something, thereby reducing what my payment might have been sans corporate sponsorship, and the rules aren't turned from all-encompassing to "corporations are the sun, we must orbit them and them alone".......wait......what was i saying? I need a nap :(

For the record, "R" stands for Reliable, not Fast. Why'd you move out of the city, you traitor?!?!?! I'm broadly offen.. eh, it's not that funny anymore, never mind.

Let's just say a certain day in September finally took a toll on me and I needed to get away. I'm only an hour train ride away so I still am thre a lot..especially during baseball season, and Mom lives in Long Island. And more importantly, I found a better paying job here.

*Hugs Brenda* Cloudy days make for very low approaches to Newark. I can totally relate. I'll hold down the fort for ya though! :D

I grew up out on LI... I found the strip malls to be broadly offensive. I plan on ARing them as soon as I can find the correct forms.

(That keep it on topic, ya think?)

I went to Hofstra so I know the Island well, and like I said, Mom lives in Bayshore. Long Island virtually invent the Modern American Mall I believe. Out there they sometimes really put the Strip in Strip Mall.
