From: Rusty Dagger Why can't Sl use the same kind of system PayPal uses for their Verified accounts? You need a checking account w/ debit card or a credit card to be verified. Most teens don't have either... They do in the UK..and other countries I'm sure. My first current account (when I was age 16) came with a debit card and cheque book - before I'd even got my first proper job. I believe kids as young as twelve are getting accounts with Visa debit cards now.

One important point worth remembering is that debit cards, at least in the UK, are tied to a current account, and it isn't actually possibel to "borrow" money on one of them, unless you have prior authorisation from the bank for that.

From what Steve said, it sounds like CC verification would have a better (over 1 hit-rate if they could distinguish between debit and credit cards. But can they tell the difference between a VISA debit and a VISA credit card? I have one of each, issue by the same bank, and 16-digit number looks very similar (first four digits are the same, etc.). I've touched on this elsewhere, but another reason I'm reluctant to join this age verification scheme (with its ties to US political organisations) is because I visit the United States several times a year and after what happened to Catherine Omega, I wouldn't fancy homeland security getting hold of this information. Their treatment of random visitors to the US is bad enough, without the possibility of having my pornography habits hauled over the coals, simply because I got my age & identity verified so that I could play a game. FTR: I don't touch pornography in SL, but being gay I do visit areas that will end up with the adult flag enabled for many reasons. Owners of some areas (recreational and business) have been tetchy since June 6th last year about minors turning up to cruise on their land, even though they're not adult orientated cruising environments at all. Imagine how that explanation would go down in JFK's secondary screening area.

It should be more then enough. I don't think Mastercard (I use one) has debit cards, only credit cards. But I can be wrong here. Misuse of credit cards by minors is a matter of the parents, not of SL. As said before, for me it is not the matter of age verification.... but the way how and through who. I have no need any US offical working through my personal data because I play a "game" with adult content. Morwen.

For the record, and since I voted "No"...
I'm all for the age-verification system, 100%. Like others have said above.. I have no intention of visiting "Adult" labelled places within SL. Therefore, I foresee no need to verify.
However, it remains to be seen whether only "Adult" parcels will be blocked, or if both "Adult" parcels and "Mature" sims will be blocked. My hope is that mature will not be off-limits to non-verifieds. Otherwise, why distinguish between three levels, PG, mature and adult.. whynot, just PG and mature, or PG and adult?

Most teens don't have either and if they do I would imagine they are mature for their age. This would keep 99 % of the kids out and also limit the ALTs!, You can only use your banking information on one account with Paypal, If you want an ALT you would have to supply a Different CC or bank account#. Seems pretty simple to me! Then I wouldn't have to pay out more to be on SL!!! It may sound simple to you, but try working overseas for awhile; PayPal suspended my account when it noticed an overseas IP being used. In order to reinstate my account, I ended up having to fax copies of my passport, my driver's license, my credit card, my bank statement, and a utility bill for my American billing address. PayPal lost the first batch of faxes I sent, and I lived life with a suspended PayPal account for a year or two until I needed to be able to accept funds somehow...fortunately by the time I contacted customer support there and faxed my second set of documents, things went much more smoothly.

Misuse of credit cards by minors is a matter of the parents, not of SL. It also sounds like the social security number system is easier for Johnny Upstairs to abuse because he only requires the last few numbers - as opposed to a sixteen digit CC number along with its expiry date, exact cardholder name, and three or four digit CVC. The problem with rogue minors getting parent's credit card details could be reduced significantly if LL sent a confirmation letter by snail mail upon verification. So what about credit (not debit) card verification and a small admin fee to cover LL's costs? PS. "Johnny Upstairs"? LOL. Where do I get these names?

@cHex: That wasn't a problem with the verification side of paypal, but a problem with the fraud prevention side.
Up until you used a foreign IP, you didn't have to submit any of that information.

Not A Bloody Chance Am I Giving Any Detaikls To A Company I Dont Know, Who Are Not Even In The Same Country As Me.
The Method They Are Proposing Is Littered With Possible Fraudulent Uses.
I Agree With The Reason Why And Would Love To See Sl Cleaned Up A Bit But This Way Of Doing It Just Stinks.
Why Should I Tell Them Private Details When They Cant Even Remove My Credit Card Details From The System When I Clicked Delete.
Yes Thats Right! My Details Including Last Digits Of The Card And Expire Date Still Get Displayed Under Paypal Details When I Have Cancelled Them And That Cc Is Not Even Registered With Paypal.
And Whats More They Have Not Even Graced Me With Any Replies To My 18 Emails.
Ok Rant Over!
Answer In A Nutshell..........................no!
They Can Stick It Up Their Arse!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I don't like this form of verification. It seems too risky for what you would get in return. Pornography sites will have you click on the big ENTER button which has a disclaimer below it stating that by entering you agree to be 18+ years of age (21 in some jurisdictions). Anything in SL can be the equivalent to those pictures via textures. We can stream video in SL, but I'm not sure about porn videos. If people feel comfortable sending their information to a 3rd party site, then I guess they have a right to. Don't be shocked when you start getting lots of junkmail, telemarketer calls, and E-junkmail. Perhaps someone will even sell your SS number to an immigrant.
I will not give up any of the information they want because SL sex/porn doesn't interest me. However, I am worried about what will be required to be flagged as "adult". I had better not have trouble finding skins or weapons because LL was irresponsible and left the gates unattended. We shouldn't have to pay to become verified for this very reason. Someone will say "oh but you pay to see porn on other websites". Well, everything here is user created, so the money for their products goes to the users. Not to mention people already pay for premiums, renting, merchandise, Linden dollars etc. I hope this isn't going to adversely affect the economy like I think it going to.
