I find avatars with facelights tend to look a good bit fatter than those without.

My avi does not look fat. :p

I am bumping you to an 8.5 on the Official Trout Measuring Instrument of Sluttiness. You are an enigma - on the one hand a sweet, gentle, intelligent woman who we would like to wrap up in our arms and protect, and on the other, a temptress to whom we would like to do all sorts of unmentionable things.

Congratulations and shame on you! You are a bit of a slut.

LOL have you seen Qie?

Compared to his Avatar, you are.

Course so is Twiggy, The Olsen Twins, and Lindsey Lohan.

Aha! So somebody actually does read my posts! :) (Sometimes I half-suspect I'm on some forum-wide ignore list, when whatever I post gets posted again a page later. Not this thread, though.)

Indeed, not fat. But you have to admit, the face has a certain flatness... almost asian... hmmm... ;)

No, not flat. I wanted her to have a slightly feline cast to her features though.

Facelights are WAY more obvious and problematic if you are using a WindLight viewer; at this point, that would be the new 1.19.1 RC, a Nicholaz Eye Candy viewer, or any WindLight First Look viewer that still works (if any; most or all will require you to upgrade to the RC). One important reason is that lighting in the non-WindLight viewer clamps to a relatively harmless maximum, no matter how much light you pump into a scene; WindLight, on the other hand, handles it more realistically, and too much light can cause a scene to be over-lit and washed out. Many face lights are WAY too strong, which looks pretty much the same as one of the correct strength in a non-WL viewer but overpowers a WL viewer. Anybody using face lights should download the RC and test their lights in it -- WindLight is going to be in the next main viewer, so it's definitely time to get ready for it.

The other reason that lights are more obvious in WL is that night is darker, and there is less fill light put on avatars. Light is thus a lot more apparent.

Until they force the change, I don't care how I look to others using WL. It's distinctly possible that I will uncheck the atmospheric shaders altogether when they do, in which case, I may not ever change my face lamp. I fookn hate the way Windlight makes my avi look.

I use a subtle facelight that I made (not like one of those that makes you think you're in the wash of a 10 million candlepower spotlight), much of the time when I'm taking screenshots with myself in them. Sometimes I forget to take it off when I'm done using it, but the way I look at it, if people don't like me using it, oh well, it's my right to use it. If it bothers them, they can leave or wait until I leave, or if it's their SIM, they're more than welcome to eject or ban me if it bothers them that much.

Can't please everyone all the time anyhow, someone's always going to nitpick about something. Facelights seem like a minor annoyance anyway compared to the likes of particle poofers that fill an entire room on their entrance/exit, wings that are so gigantic they fill an entire room full of people, swiping through everyone as they try to dance or look at items in a store, or those annoying repetitive gestures that fill the the screen with ASCII art, or even the dreaded grammar police.

With all the other problems and annoyances people perceive, I'd take putting up with the personal facelights over most of the other things any day of the week.

Does this post make me a hypocrite? Maybe. Chalk it up to human nature I reckon.

I never liked they way they looked, I don't use them. I can't even imagine what 4 or 5 on at once would look like.

facelights are evil !

- Facelights do nothing for polygons. Set your Avatar Detail preferences and increase your gamma if you want light.
- They are huge lag generators. Each time you avie moves or changes its pose, the viewer has to recalculate the lighting on each face of every prim and other avatar in a 10m radius.
- They just wash your face out in white with creepy shadows.
- People who wear them don't even see their face most of the time.
- They steal light sources from the local environment.
- They put you in a radiating pool of light like you're screaming "Look at me !"
- They just look unnatural.

It is just wrong to be wearing a light on your avi.

I am not sure what I am doing wrong (if it is me), but on my system, when I see someone wearing a facelight, all it seems to do is cast a white light around them that causes the avatar to fade from view. Quite frankly, I just can't seem to see the washed out avatar clearly under the blinding white light. Maybe I've only seen people with 7 light prims, or something like that, but everyone I've seen with light around them has that washed out avatar look (granted, if it worked perfectly, I might not even realize that they have a light on them, and so . . . that is possible).

Maybe they're trying to duplicate the underlit look of Lorne Greene in the original BattleStar Galactica.

Underlight. Now that would be neat, if woman walked around with the neon glow like street race cars. heh. or not. heh, I have no idea why I read what you said here and thought of a neon glowing street racer.

I've seen "body lights" that horridly over-done. They should've colored 'em for the proper effect, though.
