If designers are going to add these things, they should, at least, take the time to understand the implications of doing so.
Especially(a) not leaving them at full brightness (0.25 to 0.5 at most) and
(b) the 6-light limit.

Well I am seeing a brand new market here! Special offer for newbies: Crotch-light! So you can put a little more attention towards that pretty freebie appendage you got! Maybe with enough light, the colour appear to match!! Now no one try to steal my idea, this must make me rich in no time

Because lights are not visible prims and because there are many possible attachment points people sometimes have multiple lights on and don't know it. And they don't understand the limits in the number of lights we can see and how their lights may affect others.

I have a rug in my shop. The texture is grey, so I can yse Tint/Prim color to determine the color of the rug. IN my particular shop, it's tinted red.
The other day I noticed a customer standing in my shop. She also had 6 lights on. (I have seen people with MORE THAN 6 (WTF?)). These lights were so bright... That for a 15m radius around her, the red of the carpet was completely washed out, and the rug was grey. She had one of those "Deep Tan" skins on. It occurs to me again and again, the number of "Very dark latina" toned skins out there... and the number of women who are trying to "be" a tanned white girl with that skin. But she was trying to use those lights to "lighten up" her too-dark-for-her-desire skin.. Face and "body" lights like that, make me wonder if these people actually have "Local Lighting" turned on in their graphics settings. _____________________

I like my face lamp and I don't give a rat's ass a) what anybody else thinks or b) how I look on other people's viewers.

You Light Up My Life
03-16-2008 13:05
I have collected a variety of different face lights. Some especially for Windlight. I'm still playing around with them. Can't settle on one that does what I want, which is to to keep me from looking light a ghoul, withought lighting up the darkness around me for 15 meters! So if you come across me, and the sim is glowing, toss a dark cloth over me and tell me to detach the stupid thing! Often you don't realize how it looks to others, or how much of a radius it casts.
I am a photographer, and grab shots of myself on the fly in unusual settings. I don't have time to be rummaging around for a face light, at that moment, so I want a simple light I can always wear that will take the shadows off my face without lighting up the whole sim, thus ruining the impacts of the environmental lighting. Mari, I didn't know MystiTool had one build in; I will have to check that one out. Princess Ivory _____________________

hmmmm.... I wonder if someone could mod a followpet script to be an anti-facelight tool.
Six lights set to minimum intensity and diameter that hovers right behind the offending avatar (so it's closer to the operator's view and renders first) might make someone TP home in confusion because their facelights borked.... |

I like my face lamp and I don't give a rat's ass a) what anybody else thinks or b) how I look on other people's viewers. I totally agree with that stance! Also, the issue isn't how many lights one has, its how large the radius on them are. Even 6 local lights set at 2m (6 feet) radius is NOT that big of an inconvenience to the whiners... back up ONE step... there ya go sparky... glad I could help ![]() |

I wonder how many house developers get bitched at because "OMG YOU ADVERTISED LOCAL LIGHTS BUT I DON'T SEE ANY WHEN I TURN THEM ON" when the customer is maxing out the local light count with their goddamn face.
I'm sure the people who make skins/hair/whatever with these lights are the same sort who would blissfully sell static display products which slam sims for hundreds of temp-on-rez prims by default (or make EVERY SINGLE TEXTURE 1024x1024). |

This is interest post because I haven't really understood the lighting thing.
I have female avatar I have one for...I thought about getting one for this avatar but only for photos because it does make my face look better not those weird white and regular color tones. I figured I only use one for photos, I don't entirely understand the lights other then it improves what I see. I figure those who are using 6 may not understand how lights work. _____________________

/me peeks in thread errrmmm what's face lighting? A set of invisible, lighted prims strategically placed around an avatar to "perfectly light" and remove shadowing no matter what lighting conditions the avatar is in. Depending on your view point, face lighting is either the greatest thing since sliced bread or the spawn of an extremely vain satan. _____________________

Have not noticed this phenominon yet. Will be on the lookout for floodlit puppets. Adding such highlighters to prim hair sounds like a further disservice to the community at large. Its not like everyone doesnt know prim hair is one of those 'boggin ya down' evils that just gobbles up everybodies frame rates. Well suuuure, lets add some more prims to the friggin things so they can have a 'nice glossy coat' or something. And while we are at it, lets LIGHT THE DAMN THINGS UP SO OUR PUTER'S CAN HAVE MORE JUNK TO PROCESS!! BAH HUMBUG! Vanity SUCKS!!

FLEXI-prim hair is slightly evil. 80000 flexi-prim hair with a colour changing listen script in each prim is the spawn of satan. |

Seriously, though. As I said in my previous post, I need to be able to take photos on the fly - don't have time to dig out lighting. And I do like the way my face looks with face lighting. But I don't want to have a huge glowing radius all around me.
So can anyone recommend a simple face light that will allow for flattering lighting on my face for photos, and even just when people look at me (yes, I'm vain!), that doesn't light up the night? Thanks, _____________________

What's funny is that a person with a facelight can be mostly found... looking at themselves. You can't see your facelight working when you're in mouselook, can't see it when walking around, can't see it when looking at other people, can't see it when shopping, no... just looking at your own face and doing nothing. I call thee narcissus.

I started using a face light because I only liked how my face looked if I faced directly into the sun.
I got tired of changing the sun all the time. Second Life isn't the only 3D virtual world I've experienced I've also tried Anarchy, and City of Heroes. Of those 3 Second Life by far has the most lighting issues for the Avatar. Particularly the face. Which is kind of funny because those games have truly dark spaces, where SL doesn't. I have to laugh at content creators who call people narcissistic, if they weren't interested in how they looked, many content creators would be out of a SL job. |

It's hogging the amount of lights that can be rendered. You want one, fine, but 6? Get over yourself (figuratively speaking - not YOU, Dana, but just generally). _____________________
