I wonder if this is actually an anti-theft measure.

SLX is popular for distributing stolen content because you don't need to own land and thus have identity on file. Requiring a regular L$ fee also makes it harder for someone with no identity information to use it to distribute stolen content as freebies.

This also means I'm going to have to either take down a lot of my listings, or raise the price on the few sales I do make...

You need a place for the SLX box. If you can put up a box you can put up a vendor.

I think part of it is the stolen content issue, but also that the search issues come into it. The minimum commission does not affect me, but the L$10 per item does.

Well the cheese has been moved, so I will now consider which direction to go in to find new cheese.

Open letter to LL

Dear LL,

Thanks for making XStreetSL a place that only the big guys can afford to use.

With regards to freebies being marketing, Many years ago I made a simple sword. Because it is simple it works really well and people love it. I threw it in a box and put the box up on XStreetSL.

Made it available for $0L, people love it, its my best "seller", only I'm not in the weapons business, and I haven't bothered to keep the box updated, so any "marketing" material (like a slurl to my house inworld) is completely out of date.

It's not MARKETING, it is giving back to the COMMUNITY. (You know, that loose group of people who pay your WAGES, keep the lights on, and have been slowly leaving because LL keep doing _DUMB_ things)

Repeat after me, no community, no money, no community, no corporates, no community, no sl, no community, no LL

From what I have seen one of the biggest factors in the marketplace getting cluttered up is the fact that if you sell multiple colors or styles of the same product there is no way to list them under a single listing, the solutions provided by LL do nothing as far as I can tell to address this problem. It should be possible to allow a buyer to choose an item and then choose a color or style of that item rather than having to search through tons and tons of similar listings. If LL was really interested in fixing clutter on XStreet they should start there, instead it seems to me that this is about increasing revenue and has nothing to do with fixing a problem.

This will hurt buyers that use XStreet to find low cost or free items as most of those items will probably end up removed by their sellers. I know there are a lot of people (especially established sl merchants that sell higher prices items) that will really love this but it is definitely at the detriment to the community as a whole. One of the things that I have found wonderful about sl is all the talented people that provide great freebies and low cost items just because they love doing it and want to give back to the community. I guess that sort of good will is not something that LL is interested in promoting anymore.

I thought it was strange that the Halloween plug on Xstreet set a minimum price of L$50.I see this as the new minimum that LL want us to charge for stuff, which is a joke.I can see prices going up across the grid and freebies being only available in world. If the other place gets too popular I wonder if LL will buy that too or try to nobble it.Interesting stuff.

Nothing at all to do with theft, LL don't want to support free items, there's no such thing as a free lunch.

I create for the joy of it not to make money. This is a slap in the face for many like me.

I've removed all my SLX listings as there is no way in hell I'm going to support this extra fees.

Have people forgot about what it is to create and share just for the fun of it? Why does making money have to be the be all and end all of SL?

A sad day for all

"Monthly Listing Fee of L$10 for all items L$1 or greater:

* All non-freebie listings will now be charged L$10 per month to remain listed in the Xstreet SL Marketplace"

They certainly thought this through. Pay L$10 per listing on Christmas (Halloween, Thanksgiving, name your holiday here) for 10 to 11 months of the year for items that have a limited purchasing season. I am sure there are many other seasonal items that have busy and quiet times of the year. Not going to be worth the effort to list, delist, list...

the first thing is that this is about cost savings for LL. Those freebies are costing them money and now they've decided that their policy of attracting and retaining newbies via freebies is actually costing them we have this.

If you're unhappy with this, the last thing you want to be doing is delisting the stuff straight away. it reduces your visibility and gives them instant cost savings.

I suggest you update your listings with a note identifying this item will be removed when the policy comes in and reminding people it will be available.

When you delist the item eventually *do not delete the box and the listing*. Deactivate it on the website only and change the item name to include the slurl of your business or a note why it's no longer available.

the benefit of this is that people who have favourited your item will still see it in their favourites and it will have your slurl to enable them to find you (make sure you have that in the field or in the item description). Update the picture before deactivation if you have a little more marketing you want to add.

the other benefit of course is that it reduces their cost savings as they still have to store the data on their servers and get the magic box details.

Don't get mad, get even is my motto here.

:)

/me finds that difficult to believe. You can get 1TB disks over at newegg for under US$100.

All my remaining XStreet-SL content and my magic box have now been deleted. Thank you, LL, for simplifying my decision to part company forever with your anti-competitive merchandising platform.

My stuff can be found on the web by those who have been slapt by LL long enough, had enough mistreatment, and sought forums and e-commerce elsewhere. See you there!

/me sees long, long nights ahead of me while i get Slapt :)

There was also another bit of nonsense began floated about n the blogcrapper this mornng regarding land rentals in-world and SL taking a cut or some such. know it upset me a great deal then but this is even worse-

I said then that if their goal was to turn SL into Blue Mars, would take me and mine and head else where- I would rather be slagged down int he pre-historic days of SL than deal with the corporatization that they seem intent on shoving on us.

Regardless of that- Lord Sullivan.. someone's servers are about to become truly trafficked -

I love my SL- been here nearly four years- in that time have watched many sky s falling scenarios- this s not one btw- not for 'them' but for us. Our World, has been V'ed - it is Their world and we are but annoying gnats -
