None of the foregoing takes into account that people are obsessive about traffic to their parcels.
Do you really think that people who want to sell anything are going to eject someone for having an extra tail? Not while the Lindens are rolling in.

At most, sim owners who will enforce any sort of maximum-number-per are those who are hosting popular, busy events. And those will then see numbers decline - whether actually enough to matter remains to be seen.

I spend a fair bit of time putting my outfits together when I go to social gatherings. It's not likely that anyone any time soon will make me change my hair just for the privilege of attending their event. There are plenty of other things to do in SL.

Garrett pushed her count up to well over 5000 today :) I didn't notice any lag while she was doing it.

I Love it! Been running around with it on for a few weeks. The highest score so far was a GUY at 7250! (No payment info on file)

Didn't I hear something about being able to "turn off" the avs over a certain render cost number? I thought that was great! Totally democratic! Brilliant!

Where is it?

:)

Until I have a chance to attend office hours for this new tool, I will have to assume the metric is based on the lowest common denominator of computer and will have to start making things with the assumption that everyone in SL is running outdated machines. What sort of computer begins to become lagged by an avatar with an ARC of 5000 for example?

Another issue I have is this tool is extremely narrow in its focus. It isn't just avatars that tax computers. The surrounding objects do a pretty good job of that as well and the Lag Meter currently available really doesn't give good information on what in your surroundings is causing your client to lag.

True, but they are an easy factor that we have complete choice and control over! :) You can choose to turn off and not wear bling.

You can choose to hide an invisible attachment in your body instead of making it alpha can't you? ;)

I can choose to wear an alpha skirt with non flexi hair or alpha flexi hair with non-alpha prim skirt (or system skirt whenever they show up again).

At the four sims Valentine's hunt last year it was amazing what happened when a sim full of fashionista's all sacrificed their prim hair and shoes, frame rates went from seconds per frame and complete mud where things weren't rezzing for tens of minutes to actually possible to move!

A creator can choose to use glow instead of particles. (And also get rid of another script.)

I'd pay more for an item that advertised it's ARC, I have checked how many prims were in hairstyles before I bought them before. ;)

Well, I'll be damned if I'm going to make myself look like a n00b just to drop some number below some arbitrary level.

But, yes, you can at least make some more informed choices about some things you may or may not wear.

A friend just dropped by over 800 just by taking off her fancy AO thing and dropping the scripts and animations into a single small prim and wearing that instead.

The AO I package with my poses defaults to wearing on the HUD, so no rendering cost at all! ;)

That must have been the WetIkon AO. The box it comes in has an astoundingly expensive score, and the scripts do work fine in any old prim.

Will the hair makers and clothing designers start putting out more info about the Rendering Cost of their items?

dunno about others, but I will be putting the rendering cost # on my ads, just need to get the cost and redo the ads (just another part of the ad, I figure why the heck not, if it can give folks more info then cool)

clothes (unless they are prim) do not change the number

the number is only calculated from prim attachments.

I'm around 3000 with regular hair, without accessories, prim skirts or bling jewelry. Just me. But of course, yes, I can still "choose" not to be my avatar. This tool will cause a lot of discrimination against non-humans avas.

Anti, I was talking about this quote:
Quote:
We have high hopes for this, and other tools like it, to help you begin moderating your world. For example, with Avatar Rendering Cost, you could…
Try to get all attendees at your events to be within a certain Cost limit

You see, that is discrimination.

No it is not. Discrimination refers to something that cannot be changed like skin color in a live human. WHat and AV is wearing is easily changeable. It is NOT discrimintation.

discriminate:
to make a distinction in favor of or against a person or thing on the basis of the group, class, or category to which the person or thing belongs rather than according to actual merit; show partiality:

it might... but discrimination is not the same as racism which is how I perceive the context of your comment to be taken...

If I choose to discriminate against someone because they are wearing 3000+ render cost, then that is my choice, just the same as if I decide I do not like so and so's house because of the color of the paint.

in this case the person or thing (avatar) would belong to a high avatar render cost category.

A lot of clubs already request that you take off bling, poofers, etc. I don't see a problem with this tool at all if it actually works toward decreasing lag. Of course, I'm still using my Nicholaz viewer so I have no idea what I'm talking about! :P

I was pleasantly surprised to weigh in at 670 with flexi prim hair and a number of sculptie attachments. I went to the Inspire Space park to look at people's numbers just for fun. I saw a range of scores including a 4-month old avatar with a score of 1 .

I gotta ask Chosen, our tireless crusader for efficient resource use in builds, what is your score?

I have about 8 set outfits, 6 registered between 1200 and 1600, 1 registered over 2500 my demon av, which I only wear one in a full moon and my cute Marvin the Martian av came in at 330.

One outfit has simple prim shoes (I'll have to check how many prims), not many prims at all yet it out scores my largest primmed boots which are about 465 in total, the boots are made by a professional but the shoes are not.

I have two Steampunk outfits, the glasses in both cases where the offenders, both outfits where at the upper end.

This is evident right here in this thread. Granted this is a tiny cross section of Residents, but we already can see the polarization this tool is causing.

It certainly throws a different light on the lag debates. Everyone knew that what some avs wear cost lag, but so many people still attributed the bulk of it to other things. Now avs are quantifiable. I like it.

It's a bit strange. I have what I have been told is a unique look, with flexi hair, glasses, a piece of jewelry, prim shoes, well-detailed clothes, a good skin, a flight attachment, and an AO, and I run 169. Just what are you people *wearing*?

I haven't tried this yet....bit difficult seeing as I haven't downloaded the client. If it ain't broke don't fix it is my motto and older client worked fine for me. But curiosity killed the cat so I'm off to download and check out my stats :D

Whenever I hear someone say that the forums are too negative, I need only read the comments for the blog post on this feature. to be reminded of what negative really is.

LOL so many people seem to act like LL are making them use this feature.

Has it occurred to anyone who's complaining right now that your avatar causes just as much lag whether there's a number over its head or not? The only thing the number does is quantify the amount for you, so you can see for yourself what effects your decisions have. Given the choice, can you honestly say you'd prefer to remain ignorant, and just pretend that what you do doesn't make any difference? Come on. The system doesn't work by magic, guys. It works according to a very real set of computational laws, the same set which governs every 3D application in existence.

Ah but the problem is other people are putting a number over their head without them knowing, it's a breach of their avatars rights :)

I hate to be the bearer of bad news but there already are places that discriminate against furry avatars, not just prim heavy ones but furry avatars in general, although they are few and far between because most places realize that it doesn't make good business sense to turn away customers for stupid reasons like whether they're in furry or human form.

LOL we were at Pastrami's office hour when he introduced it, and suprise my furry Roo AV was one of the lowest under 800, same for my RoboRoo armour, a human AV who loked nearly like a noob scored 1200 or something due to hair and boots.

90% of the population will never use it, most won't know it even exists:P
