Can't see a thread on this yet. Any comments? Small excerpt... "Consider this almost like a carbon footprint approach to the performance in SL. And no, in case you’re wondering- this isn’t an attempt to offload our big responsibility to make the viewer more efficient! ..." http://blog.secondlife.com/2008/05/01/who-me-yes-you-couldnt-be-then-who-introducing-avatar-rendering-cost/

1. I really like Pastrami's writing style. He makes for a fun blog read. Wow. So I did some tests on my main just to see what this would show. My usual look: 2396 (bad) Without my hair: 1135 (much better) Without my ears: 446 (Good stuff) So looks like Prim hair was the big offender followed by my prim ears. Will people scale down the looks of their avatars to help with this? That I don't know. At least it made me more conscience of what I may be doing to a slower video card.

Yeah, it's been there since 1.20.0... They just announce it now. (=_=) All I can think is... Great... Now there's a new form of dress code. "Excuse me ma'am, but your curly hair is putting you over 1000. Please remove it for to reduce the lag." (>_< I already have enough people telling me how to dress, now I have to worry about some number? (>_<

I think it is a great diagnostics tool However there is potential for misuse here too - people disciminating based on the count. Also I think they should have left out the judgemental coloring of the tag and presented just the facts - whether a score is good or not is highly subjective and will change over time as server and client PCs get better.

For me, shoes and my glasses were the big offenders. With them I was 1600. Without them I dropped to 500 or so. (the number does change as you move the camera.)

Very cool feature. I'll definitely be playing with this. I'm scared to see my score.

Mine was 1400ish when I checked it wearing a fairly typical look. I'm fine with that.

I'm not home or I'd check, is this tool in the latest mandatory version, or just the RC?
I'm terrified to see what my favorite hair does to my rendering cost...

Whenever I hear someone say that the forums are too negative, I need only read the comments for the blog post on this feature. to be reminded of what negative really is.

my usual look (at the time being) not too bad wonder if it would be worthwhile to put the render cost points on things for sale such as hair, shoes, jewelry etc

Yeah, that is a potential issue: From: someone We have high hopes for this, and other tools like it, to help you begin moderating your world. For example, with Avatar Rendering Cost, you could… Try to get all attendees at your events to be within a certain Cost limit

Wow. Well at least you know Pastrami plays the game, he used the term "blingtards."

From: Eve Drechsler Can't see a thread on this yet. Any comments? /me giggles, um, a week or two ago? But usually the forums are ahead of the blog! (I've always thought bling looked fake and silly, I hope people will switch to glow instead now, which looks so much more natural on jewelry...)

I think that might really be OK, just because there are already busy events where this is done. Now there can be a little discretion ("oh, that flexi wig isn't so bad" instead of Thou Shalt Ruth Thyself.

Ok. So that means that in order to go to an event with my gorgeous wife, for whom I bought a lot of fancy, sexy and elegant clothes, and who likes only the best hair, I have to ask her to look just like all the others, so we should not be blamed for a lag problem THAT SHOULD BE ADDRESSED BY LINDEN LABS CHECKING THE CODE AND THE SERVERS PROPERLY INSTEAD OF PRACTICALLY FORCE US TO ALL LOOK THE SAME?

I logged in and have on a typical Lil outfit and hair -- and scored a nice Red 2700. Tough!! I like my look and things run fine on my computer.

I liked the Linden posting in the blog saying they may decide to tie it in to parcels giving a parcel rendering cost as well. I hope they decide to follow through with that one. I would just prefer an object rendering metric though. I don't feel like wearing all my rezzed objects to see their cost.

YES CLEARLY IT IS THE RESPONSIBILITY OF LINDEN LAB TO MAGICALLY MAKE SL SUPPORT INFINITE NUMBERS OF POLYGONS AND TEXTURES AND SCRIPTS WITH NO PERFORMANCE HIT WHATSOEVER, AND THIS SO-CALLED "REPORTING FEATURE" IS A THINLY-DISGUISED TOOL TO OPPRESS THE BLING-RIDDEN MASSES. THIS IS AN OUTRAGE, AN OUTRAGE I TELL YOU. ... ok, that's at least a month's worth of sarcasm from me. promise

Logged in at 640, but my favorite hair bumps it up by almost 200 (even though I was wearing prim hair before). This is fun.

So, will I have to start paying extra - kind of like Carbon Offsets? What a crock.

Also I think they should have left out the judgemental coloring of the tag and presented just the facts - whether a score is good or not is highly subjective and will change over time as server and client PCs get better. How is that discrimination? it isn't my job to suffer if you want a high prim outfit, I'm all in favor of event hosts and landowners telling visitors take off the extra stuff or get out and would even be in favor of an lsl call for this as well as a client side option (as suggested on several blog comments) to replace anything with a score over a set amount with an avatar imposter. If you want to have you're viewer display you on you're land with a high count that's you're right as a resident of sl but don't make the rest of us lag in events or have our viewer lag because of you're intricately designed/high bling (unlike LL I'll be professional and won't use the derogatory term blingtard) attachments.
