I am going to take a few minutes and think about what it would take for my company to add SL to their list of communication tools. 1 - Portability. It needs to be able to run on a netbook. Let's face it, if the people are in their offices we can use live, high def video conferencing. Currently for remote and "road warrior" (god I hate that buzz word de jure) inclusion we are using netmeeting with voice handled through the phone system. The use of netbooks keeps hardware cost low. In fact, if we were to supply all remote users with a laptop capible of running SL smoothly, we could buy LL instead. Seriously. That is not hyperbole. We have a lot of employees. 2 - PowerPoint. You know it; you love it; you hate it; it gets the job done. Wide area conferencing has at a minimum a shared desktop through netmeeting displaying a PowerPoint presentation. If SL supported PP presentations in a more drag and drop manner rather than requiring a new skill set just to implement, it would go a long way to becoming a believable corporate tool. 3 - On the fly collaboration. The other thing any business meeting has is that easel in the corner for jotting down notes and resolution points. If you could pass out one single notecard to all participants and then whatever one person adds is sent and updated to all others, this is one way to mimic the process. Again, taken from our current process of using the netmeeting whiteboard. 4 - Concurrent user limit. 100 people to a sim? If we had 1,000 sims we might get everyone interested on at one time. At that price, we would just go in-house with OpenSim and cut out LL all together. If we could get 1000 people on a sim with a passable level of stability it would be useful to some of the smaller Business Units connecting with their remote locations. If not 1000 concurrent users, then some way to fake it. Automatic instancing with user priority so that the 5 presenters will be seen across all instances but the average attendee will be in a room with 50 or so people. |

Also,I'd like to make a public apology to Eli for not pming him before going off on the thread. Eli has always been a good friend to me since we met and did not deserve that.
