I like the road from CA to Las Vegas (which we used to use fairly often to ferry kids back and forth to their other parents). At first it looks like infinite nothing and then I get to thinking about all the life that is no doubt teaming just beneath the surface. And just the scope of the mountains, the distance, the subtle colors and textures of the plants and geology - it puts little human dramas in perspective.

/me smiles (and then drives even faster to get it over with) :p

After lunch and a couple of cocktails, and a little souvenir shopping, the next event was the First Time Ever Together and In Character appearance of Gowron and Martok, aka Robert O'Reilly and JG Hertzler. These have always been two of my favorite characters, Martok was an honorable warrior without peer, and Gowron was the typical politician who knew who to get inbed with and when.

They came out scuffling with canes all stooped over, exhorting the audience to rejuvenate them with Klingon War Cries. Once that happened, things went someplae I never expected.....they became Abbott and Costello! It was Interstellar Slapstick the rest of the way, Robin Williams in in Space. Every so often they would lapse back into "serious" mode, usually when a bit flopped, but they were a riot. O'Reilly was especially goofy, he kept referencing the TNG episode whre Data was trying to understand comedy.

There were also two Q and A's with Richard Arnold, who was a good friend and Assistant to Gene Roddenberry. I missed some of it unfortunately, but what I caught was very interesting. He gave some great insight into Roddenberry's philosophies, and on how the path Star Trek took after his death was somewhat controversial. He also touched on the DS9/B5, "Who ripped off who" discussion, as well as the general thoughts on "Voyager" or as he called it "Star Trek meets Gilligan's Island".

All in all it was a fabulous weekend. Since I didn't go on Friday I missed Marc Alaimo and Jeffrey Coombs. I also passed on the optional Saturday Night Dessert Party, with Billingsley and Trinneer. I met someone who went and they did say it was worth the extra cost. Both actors sat at each table chatting for awhile, and when they had finished, Billingsley shouted..:"I'm off the clock, let's party", and stayed until they kicked everyone out of the room.

So, I do plan on going to Vegas next year, and will dress for it, and will look to volunteer when it comes back here next year.

Connolly Out.
Wonderful! Thanks so much, Brenda, for taking me there.

PS For me Babylon 5 is the best tv show ever. (In large part because J. Michael Straczynski had the whole five year run planned out before they started.) No doubt in my mind that it owed a lot to Star Trek.

there are a couple of green parts to Nevada. i urge you to investigate those as well.
A couple of years ago I got to drive from Las Vegas to North East Colorado. We saw so much fabulous scenery. Most of Nevada wasn't that green on that route lol but I know some of it is.

Today's Vanity pics were taken at Rutgers Stadium, part of Ceera's Rutgers University build. I suggest you go see it, it is marvelous. :)

How can you look so official and so cute at the same time?

Sorry. It seems even among those involved, Voyager was not thought of very highly.

I just looked at the guest list for The Vegas Show this weekend. *Faints*

This is the first time I ever seriously thought about attending one of these things. Between your first person account and ALL THOSE great characters/actors I'm really in the mood. I couldn't believe I kept scrolling down and down.

And maybe even a chance to meet Brenda in rl...

I wonder how much money I'd need to save up...

It's also the first time I've realized that Law & Order's Dr. Olivet was the same actress who played TNG’s Minuet.

The caption reads, "You're sh**tting me!"

.
Voyager had many good qualities but it was no DS9.

Thank you for asking 3- According to the nurse, mom's leg is improved over night- I will know better when i can see her this evening after work. She said she did not sleep well and I do not doubt it- hospitals being rather notorious for that. Her spirit is cheerful though- pretty soon she will be climbing the walls and attempting escape, I am sure.
Thanks for the update, Amara. Prayers and wishes that she continues to mend as quickly as possible.

Don't feel bad. My favorite spinoff, DS9 was apparently reviled by the followers of Roddenberry as it broke every hard rule he had set down on Star Trek.
You mean like all the women have to wear short skirts so no one mistakes them for anything other than sex objects? Of course I haven't seen a female Star Trek character yet without a huge bazoom - but maybe I'm just jealous about that.

Arizona itself has practically no humidity, which is why the hotels do the mister systems. Sometimes the misting helps, but sometimes it doesn't.
As long as the mist is evaporating off of your skin it feels cool anyway.

The last few weeks have been absolutely awful in RL. When it rains it pours. =x.x=

So to take my mind off my woes I've been trying to do some hunts.

Here's some gifts from the Sci Fi Hunt:

This is very Sci-Fi -and yet it has a Maxfield Parrish look to it also. I just love it, Clover.
I hope stupid RL shapes itself up for you soon.

*waves at all*

I am here for pity.

My new workout program has me feeling like I've been held upside down and beaten with a large bat. Urgggggggh. Sore and cranky.

Please pity me. And send pie if you can.

:(
Oh you poor, poor, sweet, sweet baby!

Are all the freeway exits still closed for construction in Tuscon? I've spent a bit more time there and most of it is very nice.

They are starting to open a few of them. Last I heard, the project isn't supposed to be done until December. But originally it was supposed to take till next June.

What are those green things on your faces? Enquiring minds want to know.
Apples.

eta: Sorry, I didn't realize this question had already been answered way better than this.

I think that was more 1960's Network TV, than anything else. After all, in the rejected pilot, the women all wore pants and The 2nd in Command was a woman. ;)

Glad your mom is in good spirits, Amar.

I love the desert. It has an untamed beauty that isn't "in your face"... I've camped all over the western desert, Mojave, Anza-Borrego, Death Valley, among other spots more far afield. Some of my most treasured memories:

Waking up in the early morning in a high bowl-shaped valley far off the beaten path in Death valley and just listening to the silence, as you realize there isn't another soul in the entire valley.

Hiking to deserted sand dunes about a mile off the 4-WD road, and sleeping on the dunes. Sitting very still in the evening as the sun sets, and a desert kit fox wanders by to say hello.

Stuck in the snow on New Year's day after spending the night on Hunter Mountain, just outside Death Valley. We had to sacrifice our ensolite pads for traction, haha... My son and I rode on the tailgate to give more traction, as the snow blew all around and sunlight glinted on the sparkling flakes.

Stopping in a sandy wash to inspect one perfect purple cup of a wildflower, all alone in the pristine sand.

I could go on and on...

However, I wouldn't recommend any of those spots in mid-summer, LOL.
Wonderful vignettes! Thanks.

Mine: running on a path in the desert outside of Tombstone in the early morning, my thoughts alternating between the glories of being away from it all and wondering if maybe I should have brought my cell phone. :p
