Does anyone know how to find IBM people here?
03-30-2009 05:53
I got into a semi-heated discussion last night with my friend about how corporate America would/could/should truly leverage SL without screwing it up. I felt that I had some positively Brilliant! ideas, but as is usually the case she did not concur with my elevated self-worth analysis :-(

She mentioned that she had seen some av's in business suits in world with IBM above their heads. Any other sightings like this, or anyone know how to get in touch with them or their peers without my having to take off my latex catsuit(s) and get into street clothes? Let the manhunt begin...any sightings please give them my name and tell them that it's imperative that I talk with them. Cheers. J.

Maureen - thanks for the dancing last night. I didn't notice until much later that I had forgotten to disarm!

*Checks in from the Hotel Guest Computer and waves.

How was the wedding?

@ Kaimi; If I had to vote on Coolest Person here, I'd be stuffing the box with your name. *This is New Jersey, after all.

Please don't. There are enough souless parasites running around SL as it is, playing Bloodlines. They've totally ruined the real world, must they be allowed to ruin the virtual one?

Hi, Brenda...I don't think we've met unless it was at Lil and Spikes' wedding. Based on my RL experience, they WILL ruin the virtual world if allowed to go uneducated. It will be an innocent act on their part, led by LL people and by a very smart group of people who view this place from their remote perspective. Witness the "merger" of IBM with places like Early, Cloud and Co., ROLM telephony systems and Lotus Development. If you don't know those stories IM me in-world and we can talk. Believe me when I say that they mean no harm, they are not Conquistadors, they are more like evangelical missionaries.

Again, a leap of faith, but the right person with the right qualifications who speaks the right language talking to the right people (not executive management, but the knowledge workers and mid-level corporate decision makers) is a model that has literally changed the world on many occasions. I know. Can't tell you how I know, though. Best, Jackie.

Even worse. :p

They don't mean harm, they mean to sell us their junk even here.

Sorry , we will just have to agree to disagree on this. I hold today's corporate culture in very low regard, just slightly above politicians. The idea of technolgy companies in SL is no big deal for obvious reasons, but the Consumer goods driven ones? I'd prefer they stay out. I don't want to be the target of their marketing garbage here. It's hard enough avoiding them in RL. I don't want to see spinning Coca Cola signs all over the place as I wander the grid, which I think is part of LL's plans for SL.

*No, we haven't met. Pleased to meet you. :)

Jackie, you can find IBM people all over SL, but you are unlikely to be able to identify them as they won't have IBM floating above their heads - because SL's reputation is not one that fits well with their corporate culture. For example their guidelines in relation to virtual worlds (see http://domino.research.ibm.com/comm/research_projects.nsf/pages/virtualworlds.IBMVirtualWorldGuidelines.html) include a warning: "If you are in a virtual environment in conjunction with your work at IBM and you encounter behavior that would not be acceptable *inside IBM*, you should “walk away” or even sign out of the virtual world." So you are not going to find IBMers in any place associated with sex drugs and rock'n'roll, I would have thought!

The Linden discussion thread on the policy change might be a good place.

Hey Jackie. Google is your friend on this - search for IBM and "virtual world" for a little background on IBM's considerable investment over the years. In SL, they have both a set of islands (next to Caledon), and their own grid based on LL servers, and employees of their virtual worlds group can pass between the grids. They are the only company to date that has this arrangement. But ... this thread is for breakfast and parties, so I'll leave it at that.

Congrats! :)

Post a link, better yet, send it to LL's PR dept. They never seem to have anything official to say to counter the scandal stories. They have been their own worst enemy in SL's image problem.

Pull up the map and type in IBM for sim name - they used to have a few sims and some were open to the public.

BTW - Sun Microsystems has a few sims also and some of those are public. They used to actually have some inworld meetings and you could sometimes run in to them on their sims. They all have SunMicrosystems as their last name, so they are easy enough to spot - though I have not seen one for about a year.

I can send a copy to people who want it, but you have to be a subscriber to read the story with the link. Only thing is, it includes a RL picture of me. :O

Pep - believe me, I know their corporate policy. It includes such things as discussions that could be construed as collusion, restraint of trade, preferential treatment, any possible violation of statute etc. You are requested and required to get up, state your concerns in a very obvious manner (in case of litigation) and make a visible exit from the situation. I never had to do that, personally. In any discussions with any in world people, I'd be sure to keep my clothes on, as difficult as I find that to do :-)

Sorry to bring everyone down, seriously. I know we have fun here (I'm about funned out after spending time with you guys in world...need to rest up after those events) and didn't mean to get too serious. There just seems to be a lot of complaining about the situation and thought the maniacs here might have some advice on how to stay "below the radar" so I could help out. I could in RL make 2 phone calls and be in the office of the person in charge of the SL relationship at Big Blue in less than 72 hours, but I'd have to take some vacation time from my current RL career, and then how would I explain that they could never meet me in world due to privacy reasons? In fact, this post eliminates the possibility of that sort of a frontal assault. Guess I'll go black op on this. Thank you all for the help. Now everyone smile again :-) Jackie

Brenda, thanks again. With all due respect to your status here, that scenario is exactly what I'm trying to avoid. Anyway, end of discussion on this thread, I didn't mean to bring everyone down. Any good parties going on tonight? Let's post some more wedding pictures!!!! Cheers, all!

Which is why there isn't a chance in hell of IBM getting more involved in SL until and unless the "adult" (however you want to define it) elements of SL are removed to a separate place . . .

Pep ( . . . and are nuked out of existence)

No need to be clandestine. Many folks have an alt who is their RL identity - in some cases (most notably some of the Lindens), that alt sort of looks like them. In other cases, the RL alt is very clearly NOT them - cyborg, abstract, or steampunk furry. IBM employees are the same as everyone else in that regard, and the ones I've met are easy-going about the occasional catsuit. But, true - I never ran into their "official" avies in seamier venues, when I did my touring of SL's dark side. I'm sure your RL alt will have a lily-white record of TPs and IM text ... s/he will just be suspiciously well put together for someone who's spent so little time inworld.

With respect to things going on this evening, it's quite possible that Madhu Maruti's Monday night "salon" is going on at Madhu's Cafe, but I've not seen a notice yet. :) It's usually around 6 pm SLT.

And...here's another wedding pic:

She said she was thinking about it but might go next week.
