I appreciate everyones efforts but i hate it here, I am onyl wwandering around trying toearn my money back, I find it dull, tedious and too much work for little return.

For thoise who mayy think I am a quitter, I had the unfortunate situation of learning how to walk again after a bad and crippling accident. 3 months later I managed cope with the trauma of that. So, I am no shirker when it comes perserverance. I have tried my damndest for SL, but it bores me to tears. I simply want my money back, and look upon this as a stupid, stupid mistake.

Sorry to hear of your disappointment Wenkinnoc.

SL like the WWW is about people. Without them there is nothing. Anything else, the land, the creativity, the clothes are just bells and whistles.

If you've not interacted with people, discovered like minded souls, laughed with them, cried with them, loved them or hated them then there is nothing for you here.

Throwing money at SL without even getting to know anyone is indeed a mistake. Many have the times of their lives and haven't put a cent in.

Many, like you, have severe physical impediments and for them SL is their greatest portal into 'real life'.

Sorry your attitude seems so materialistic - probably a victim of the press' popular misconception of what SL is for :(

Aw Wen, I totally know what you mean. When I first joined well over a year ago (I wasn't Solanghe then) I felt that way too. I mean, there is so much to see and do, but I am by nature kinda shy in RL, so that spilled over into SL too.

But, just like anything, it takes awhile to get the hang of it. I have found that asking questions of residents who have been here awhile works really great. If you politely seek out advice from people who are sucessful at what they do, you will be amazed at the kind responses and offers of help you will receive.

I've had other residents gift helpful items to me when I was only asking for advice (!), offer to come to my location to help with a problem (like when I re-textured 1/2 of my house - lol) and too many other such wonderful things to mention here. In addition, some of these folks have become friends over time, despite my shyness.

I am on the verge of opening a business now myself. Not to make lots of loot, but for the creative challenge and the fun of it. So, my advice to you would be to go slow, don't expect too much of yourself (or others) too soon, and definately take some classes if you want to learn building or whatnot. I still visit The Shelter and other newbie places, and still pick up the occassional freebie.

Don't give up yet! :)

Guys a confession.

I look around, i see people who are plugged in with a solid group, make tons of money, or have such wonderful land and blogs, create buildings that rival the magnifience of the Sistene Chapel and I wonder is there any real potential for toys?

I'm afraid not. The stipend level of L$300 is set so that you can't simply sell your L$ and make a profit on your Premium fee.

Between the stipend and just a little bit of selling or land dealing, it's not hard to make up enough to pay for your membership fees.

So back to the original question.

Second Life is like learning to play the guitar. If you're not an expert within a week, you should definitely give up and quit, because you're obviously worthless.

I have found that I have the least fun when I'm working too hard at earning money. Even though I camp, I no longer do it while I'm actively at the computer unless it happens to be available and I'm actually shopping in the store around it. It's a real downer to eat up my time doing nothing when I could be having fun doing something else. Or if I've been building and tweaking past the point of obsession, I most definitely need a change.

At that point I have to take a break and just have some fun - go out to a club with good music, find somewhere beautiful to explore, or just go play a good game of slingo and curse with all the other people getting devils.

The point? Don't focus so much on the money and the experience will greatly increase.

A tale of two avatars
01-26-2007 14:38
I have two avatars; my first is Elizabeth. She is an extension of me and what I do, and enriches my life. I created her to come in and learn about libraries in SL. I found library and education sites, and talked to the people I found there. I went to lots of different people and talked to them. Out of the several hundred people Elizabeth has talked to, I have made 10 or so friends who I check in with and talk to.
My other avatar is bored and has no friends. She goes to clubs, says Hi, but just doesn't seem to take off. And the reason is that I think she has no purpose. She is not really an extension of my life, and I find I don't care about creating an alter-ego with her.

Tateru Nino has 3 pieces of advice which I think are good:
learn something new everyday
teach someone something everyday
and I can't remember the third one. But it is good advice :-)

So find a purpose. Or discover that your purpose is not in SL for now, and that there are better ways for you to spend time. No use in throwing good money or time after bad. Maybe it's just not for you.

Wow. I have realsid what a atotal idiot I've been. Just as I said before, when i see how clever people are, i feel really infferior in comparision, so I feel likeI have no purpose here in SL. But, you guys have spurred me on. Thanks.

But, if i could make one final request...

Could i maybe hang out with some of you wonderful people? I gotta say, I only wish that people in RL were as pramatic and sweet as you all.

I think a lot of us feel like that, really... I've been here almost three years, and I can still name a few people who make me feel talentless and inferior whenever I look at their work. :) I think the key is to see things like that, not as something to compete with or measure yourself against, but as an example of how far you can go, as something to inspire you. Even the best builders and scripters were beginners once. :)

Well said Ilianexsi!

Instead of allowing other people's awsome talents to make me feel inferior..I allow it to wash over and inspire me. Its much better to try to think proactively than reactively. A lot of life and energy in that!

Awsome!

What inspired me to start building things was someone's forum post asking for advice on how to build a Pringles potato chip. Great thread.

They said they used 10 prims to do it, and I'm sure it looked like a dog's breakfast up close.

I love a challenge, so I set upon trying to build a Pringle. After dozens of attempts, I made a passable one in one prim out of a piece of a torus, but since it's not possible to 100% hollow an object, there was space between the two sides. When you look at it edge-on it looks awful. I tried layering two identical torus pieces together and making only one side of each visible, but something doesn't work right with the mapping, so even though you can't see a space, sometimes you see the texture underneath when you shouldn't. Hard to explain. Doesn't matter.

Just get inspiration from wherever. Decide what your 'thing' is. Build cars even if you don't know how to script, if that's what you like.

Yes! Exactly right Ilia...I look at these amazing things; the builds, the landscaping, the SHOES (!) lol - and see a potiential for myself - how far I can go creativley in SL if I choose.

For now, I am trying to make a table. That's it. A simple table. And to be honest, it's the ugliest thing I have ever seen. But, a year from now....

You've only been in Second Life for a week! :)

Almost nobody makes any money in a week, nor gets involved in anything too major. At that point it's quite right that you should be flying around, meeting people and just seeing what's around. Stronger friendships, group involvements, only form later - and that's a good thing, because if you try and do them too soon, you might miss out on things.

You've got your membership and land for a month now, so why not stay for at least that much longer? (And if your land is First Land, you can resell it for more than the price of your membership.)

<<<Couldnta' said it better myself

What to do in SL? Hmmmmmmm.

Quickly went through the "love" portion and past the "pixel slapping". People do find love here, real love. A very good freind has flown to meet her partner from here now. But I wasn't looking for love.

Okay, I'll bite, what's the love portion and what's pixel slapping?

Make the challenge more interesting...try to make a table using only one or two prims . . . and no cheating by putting a table texture on a box ;)

You might be surprised what you can accomplish using 1 or 2 prims and some interesting use of color.

I to felt lost and alone but that's when I found my Star Fleet group, now only if I can fit in more time for it lol. Just take your time bud and find a group that fits your image.

To be honest I am still working on making a few friends in SL myself but having a group or a sim group to hang out in is really cool.

Contact me Buck Dean, in SL if you want to hang :)

Har! I am a rough fellow, we call that "doing the cyber-nasty" where I come from.

I believe we have met in SL, good sir. In a little shop, in Caledon? Well met, again!

During my first few days, I just explored SL and bumped into someone that offered me to help out with the usual stuff like finding a skin, common courtesy in SL and stuff like that.
I was amazed in the following days that so many others would help as well without asking anything in return. Now I try to do the same if someone asks because I remember how "lost" I felt when entering SL for the first time.

So stick around, SL will be your fave hangout!
