Do you let people see where you are on the map?

From: Snickers Snook In my two years on SL, I've only allowed two people to see where I am. But even so, I don't see why you would. Is it a trust issue? Are there practical reasons for doing it? I only give my close friends the ability to find me on the map. If someone randomly sends friend request to me i normally dont give those people the ability to find me on the map.

I wouldn't want RL friends to be able to track me down anytime, why would SL be any different. The only exception is my RL husband.

From: Nic Writer ... with the ability to find him on the map, I couldn't resist looking. I don't even know how to do this (look at a Friend on the map). I just automatically uncheck that box. For the same reason that I never turn on Ban lines: it's the way I interpret 'good manners' in SL. Now I'm wondering if the system is set up to change the Friend's setting so that I couldn't map the Friend, either, when I uncheck that box. (Not that I have any Friends who'd be rude enough to drop in unannounced, nor would I do so to them, so the question is rather moot.)

Ever since they made mapping friends an option instead of always on, I've had it turned off and gladly so. There's just too many nosy people out there that have an unhealthy preoccupation of butting into other peoples (as in MY) business. IMO The ability to map people provides a temptation, an easy way to discreetly (or not so discreetly) concern themselves with things they shouldn't be concerned with.

I gave this ability to one friend hoping she would start surprising me, but she never does. She always chats me up instead, or vice versa.
Haven't had any reason to remove it, so she can still spot where I am.

These days I mostly use it to tell if someone is likely to be busy or not before I IM them.

i've left mine on. never had a problem yet, which means i'm either very lucky or adept in my choice of friends. i've used it, however, with those that have allowed me the option to see them. if i have something to ask or say, i'll look on the map to see where they are. if they're "home" and "alone" then i'll go ahead with my IM, but, if i see they are elsewhere or with one other avatar VERY close by, i'll just save it for a later time.
(edited to add: if this hadn't taken me so long to finish up, i wouldn't have verbosely repeated Argents post...)

Oh god it's the semi-quarterly should people/should people not be allowed any privacy thread Weighing in as usual in the red corner are the "you can map me any time" crew who are determined that they don't need any damned privacy so nobody should have any. In the blue corner we have the "I don't want to talk or be around any one ever" gang who probably don't have any friends to map them anyways but still want that option removed. In the middle is today's referee, the poor sap who just wants a little privacy now and then, even if it is an illusion, to get a bit of piece and quiet to occasionally work on stuff but really does appreciate their friends and loves social events but really only not when they are forced down their throat or dropped on in the middle of really steamy smexxies. The bell has been rung, the contenders are circling and first bloods have been drawn. How long can it be before the gloves come off and bare knuckle punches start being thrown? Who can tell...

Are we reading the same thread? Seriously, I've only seen folks answering the question and giving their reasons for their choice; I've not seen a single post insisting that others make the same choice.

My sincere apologies; I suppose the very fact that this thread *was* so civil, compared to previous threads you mention, led me to confusion about your comments.

From: Madhu Maruti I suppose the very fact that this thread *was* so civil, compared to previous threads you mention, led me to confusion about your comments. I only start civil threads. Seriously, my question was more one of curiosity vs. the privacy aspects. However, mapping friends & privacy are clearly linked. I've never once been asked to turn on mapping by a friend.

If a boyfriend suggested that he should map me, I would get second thoughts. If he would feel the need to check where I was, I would feel the need for a break-up. I allow my partner, he asked me. I did not see it as a breakup offence. I got nothing to hide.

From: Brenda Connolly I want the ability to map your assless chaps. Fly out here to LA. Anyone could tell you how to find me and my assless chaps. I'm considerd a local hero in Hollywood. Hundreds of assless chaps have been donated to the poor. You see them anywhere now, but none look as good as they do on me.
