Do you let people see where you are on the map?

Some people (including me) are unpredictable so "no". I want to avoid any likely misunderstanding.

No. I can't remember anyone ever asking, and I don't ask to see other people on the map.

I see a lot of people now days worried about other people being able to cam into their house to watch whatever they are doing..

I have to say it is a lot less frustrating then them landing on top of you while you are right in the middle the pixel heat..

intruder:  what the hell are you doing girl?

Me:  I'm just ..I'm just..Hey who the heck are you anyways? GTFO==>

*Adds name to orb.*

Intruder:What the hell are all these ropes for!!!!? *3.2.1 Swooshed home*

*Moments later*
ME: Oh crap that was!!! oh never mind :o

Just thought to add, unless I see that my partner is out shopping or something (meaning I know the sim he's at), I'll poke in IM before landing on his head. Would be awkward if he's in the middle of some medieval RP and suddenly a dude falls out of the sky. "Witchcraft! Wiiitchcraaaft!!"

Only two people can see me on the map. Neither asked, it just seems the right thing to do-they are my loves so why not? :) On the other hand- I have friends I can see on the map that I never asked for such thing, so perhaps to them it is normal- I still wd never pop in just cause i could. I would let close friends certainly if they asked but I can't imagine why anyone would.

No one has ever dropped in on me unannounced actually. Also, with Emerald you could tp anywhere and to anyone so really it hardly matters. Polite people wd not do so regardless, so this is a sort of meh thing. Letting someone map you, on the other hand, to me implies great trust, so it is something I would choose as in saying, "See? this is how much our lives are entwined." I don't really think it needs to be a lover mind, you can have friends that close you wd grant that much entry into your life. Sort of like giving someone a key to your house- I have had RL friend that had a key to my house with out a relationship beyond friend, and she still wd fone ahead to see if ok to drop in.

You can see your friend's on the map in Emerald even if they didn't check off that option?:/

For some reason, I turned it on for my three active friends. I'll probably turn it off next time I'm in world.

Only my partners.

Partly, it's a trust thing. But it's useful, too. It makes it easy to get to wherever the other is, quickly.

There is etiquette involved. I *always* still call ahead and ask, "may I join you?" It's embarrassing all around to pop in and find your SL sweetie engaged in, um, extracurricular activities. Even when your relationship allows for them.

I think I've heard that there's something in the IM protocol that lets anybody, friend or not, get your location if you open an IM session with them. You'd need a bot or a hacked up viewer to actually get at this info but it's there. Or at least used to be. I think. Maybe.

See, this is why you want to have a "log in offline" option in the SL IM system, so you can go in-world and do things ... whether building or doing something private with specific people ... without having everyone bug you. In that state, NOBODY could tell you're online let alone see you on the map. When you're interested in just hanging out, you could turn all that back on in one swell foop.

It's such an obviously essential function. All the RL instant messenger systems have it.

Only my hubby can map me. Even with that, he asks what I am doing. We just don't drop in on each other like that. Now if he ims me and I don't answer because I'm afk, he may use mapping to tp where I'm at. When that happens, I'm usually slumped over from being afk. When I return, he asks "dear, did you have 1 too many drinks"?

On the other hand, someone like me is a sucker for attention. Wanna see me? Come and get me! Xd

Though, I make no promises over what side of me you'll see when you land. I'll just say this... ~I~ won't be the one who's embarrassed. =^-^=

I'm not inworld but I seem to remember that if you are using Emerald you can see where friends are ***if they are in the same sim as you*** and use Emerald's tp facilities to jump to where they are.

Was part of a Proxy ( I do not name it) and also some older Inventory management software (I do not name it). LL fights back with server updates so those things do not work anymore.

Not just friends, you can have everyone on the same sim listed and get the "tp to" option.

Nope. Nobody but my alts can map me.

My partner and I used to have mapping turned on, but after a while it just felt weird and creepy and we turned it off.

One other individual gave me the ability to map him for a while. But after a while, he started finding other things to do and we didn't spend so much time together. And when I'd see him log on and he didn't IM me, I'd wonder where he was and what he was doing... I KNEW it was none of my business - but with the ability to find him on the map, I couldn't resist looking. And THAT was really weird and creepy, so I asked him to turn it off.

I have turned the mapping on before for a couple of people - more as an act of faith, trust, and commitment, not because they ever asked.

This is very interesting. I've never been in that position myself but I bet I would be just the same as you - too curious to resist looking. And just as you describe I don't think I would feel good about it either...

I've never given or received mapping ability and can't see a reason I would want to use it. I can't imagine ever dropping in on someone without asking first, even my sweetheart. And once I'm asking, the other person may as well send a TP anyhow.

Back in the day, every friend could do that, which led to some less-than-pleasant moments.

Nowadays I let some of my closer friends have that ability -- I also know that the ones I give it to are the ones least likely to use it. Ironic, I s'pose.
