Nah, China's still basically a third world country. Their military technology is already obsolete. The oft quoted statistic that the PLA can field over 3000 tanks fails to take into account that the majority of them are old Russian T42s, which were designed in the 1960s. They're what are euphemistically referred to as a "human resource rich" country. I don't think any of us on either side of the Atlantic have much to fear from them.

There are ways to Conquer other than Militarily. And probably by that time, since we will not be the Superpower and will be broke and can sell China all the Tanks they need.

Sorry dear after your previous claim that the EU has a GDP 8x that of the USA (the actual figure is 1.1x), you excuse me if I don't accept your potted strategic analysis of China at face value :p

Duh!

The point is, when it benefits a "we are bigger than you" defense, EU is compared against America (a country). But the truth is, there is quite a bit of dislike amoung the people of EU countries and there always will be. They don't get along enough to ever form a single country. I am not going to give examples. Yes, I've lived there, glad I dont now.

Well you're partially right but you miss the United States part from America. They never used to be one country.

Basically it would appear the americans don't like being charged foreign transaction fees. LL don't charge them foreign transaction fees, their banks do apparently.

Last time I checked, the US, UK and the EU where allied by NATO, i doubt that will end anytime soon, so tuck that national pride away and stop waving it like a n00b prim weenie!

The EU should be billed from an EU based bank using Euros.

the US should be billed from a US bank in US dollars.

Neither should be in a position to pay an additional bank fee.

I think it depends on the bank, I have 2 accounts and neither one charges this fee.

And I'll add, they are Linden Dollars, not Linden Euros!

I empathise with them and heck, I live in the UK. I deal with numerous online companies in the UK on a monthly basis. If they all suddenly started using an American bank to process transactions without telling me, these would incur banking fees I wasn't expecting and I would be mightily pished.

Livinda Goodliffe figured out the reason for what's happening but it appears her post went under everyone's radar:

I told you the NATO line was a throwaway.........

Your banking plan makes perfect simple sense. Which means there is no chance of linden Labs adopting it. And yes, Our banks are charging the fees, not Linden. And yes they did Blog it a while back.

The Banks charge the fees, not LL. The banks don't have to charge the fees, it's a bank issue, not a LL issue.

Someone further up the thread said that his banks don't charge him.

I realise that Ciaran and I didn't suggest otherwise. Some banks in the UK charge you for things that other banks don't. It stands to reason that moving your billing system onto another continent is going to trigger transaction fees by some banks. If Amazon UK started using an American merchant to accept payments, I assure you it would happen here too.

As Livinda said, "Seems Linden Lab outsourced thier credit card verification companies without verifying compatibility with US banking systems." As the overwhelming majority of US citizens use US banks LL should have had the foresight to realise the problems this would cause. As such, they have to take some responsibility.

Does Linden verify ANYTHING before they make a business decision. Jesus Christ on a Pony! They don't seem to have the foresight to realize their heads will get wet if they go out in the rain.

THis thread has progressed well in my absence! :)

Just to set the record straight, my posts that started this whole silly off-topic debacle were mean't in a humurous manner which, I quickly discovered, didn't translate well. It's easy to forget that, just because we share a common language, we don't necessarily have a simillar national sense of humour. A fellow Englishman would have seen the jocular strain running through my posts, take my word for it - but on reflection, I realised that our trans-Atlantic cousins might not necessarily see the humour of it, particularly in text format where tone of voice is not present, hence the reason I editted my post to delete it (not quickly enough unfortunately)

Brenda, sorry I offended you - it seems our nations' humour is just too different (with the exception of Sean Cullen's "Food of your Choice" song, for those familliar with it).

And that's as apologetic as my sense of personal pride will let me be.

But we don't want it!
I was trying to be subtle about it, but now you've made me come right out and say it.

Go back to calling itthe League of Nations and then we can talk.

Actually the common joke for the existance of Nato was "to keep the Americans in, the Germans down, and the Russians out" - although this of course goes back a fair bit. Europeans were rather annoyed with American isolationism and that the U.S. was chronically "late to the party" when it came to their wars, no one trusted the Germans, and the Soviet Union was actively undermining every country they had a chance at. That's all topsy-turvy now though: the Americans are phoning everyone up saying "Hey we're having a war! You want to bring the beer?", Most everyone loves the Germans except the Germans themselves (they of the never-ending angst party...) and the Soviet Union ... well ... 'nuff said.

*points to Texas* Well, if they ever got around to seceeding like they keep PROMISING TO DO we wouldn't be anywhere near as ... um I gotta say this ... ugly, policy-wise at least.

Interesting map. Had to laugh that Norway and Minnesota are equivelent :-)

I'd amend the joke thusly: Keep the Americans in, the Germans down, the Russians out, and the French away...... :p

On the plus side, if it gets us a discount on a new trident system, then I suppose it's worthwhile. Until the French build something we can buy instead.

What could that be besides smelly cheese and overpriced wine?

They do good sea food.

/me pulls a shocked face sudden of realisation

Which they take from OUR seas!!

/me shakes his fist at the French and all their kind!

Back to the topic. No one has mentionned the OP's reference to US citizens having their assets frozen. That sounds painful.

I've seen the charge on my bills, but I haven't had any frozen assets. I get my lindens, when the Lindex is working, and that's it. Perhaps clarification on the frozen asets is in order.
