They do good sea food.

/me pulls a shocked face sudden of realisation

Which they take from OUR seas!!

/me shakes his fist at the French and all their kind!

Back to the topic. No one has mentionned the OP's reference to US citizens having their assets frozen. That sounds painful.

I strongly suggest they submit a Jira on this!

There is one, submitted by me

Allow the use of different types of payment options for payments. Direct transactions to accounts from banks (such as direct transfers), Paypal (I know, already done), US banking system standard debit/credit card (that includes an option for the 3 digit security code on the back of the card), Pay by phone, eCheck, direct payment as account credit from a banking account (in other words, make a secure payment to an SL account and it is charged as a USD credit on thier account with LL). Residents need many options when payment is concerned in a global economy.

This thread went back to being serious!!
This was my backup thread for trolling while waiting for */me coughs* "the other" thread to get some momentum.

What will I do now!?

That's OK. It helps keep us honest.

True, true - life's not all fun and games.

Hurrah! I just got up to the bit in yesterdays thread on page 6 where you finally lost your cool and started using capitals. I'd have capslocked by page 3, so I admire your reserve :)

I was going to mention that Russia is a beautiful country, don't dismiss it unless you have been there!

...and I think I remember viewing the jira on this issue, maybe it was a subconcious objective.

And I'll add, they are Linden Dollars, not Linden Euros!

Well, the United States isn't the only country to use dollars as its national currency...

Off the top of my head, some other countries that use "dollar" as their national currency include Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, Fiji, Belize, Jamaica, Barbados, Guyana... (I collect coins & stamps).

I know there are more, but those are the ones I can remember off-hand.

wtf? A citizen of the U.S ponders...

With all this convoluted droll humour flopping around Im still trying to figure out whats going on. What are these penalty fee's being charged for exactly? Is this strictly a purchasing $Lindens thing, or is this occuring when making a monthly tier payment, ect? Are you saying LL payments of whatever sort by U.S citizens are going through a foriegn bank even tho LL itself is located on the west coast of the U.S? Ive heard they have nice shrubbery over there on the other side of the pond, but why are we using their banks exactly? Ive encountered outsourcing before. Usually its companies doing it to save cash. i.e Having Indians answer your phone support lines because they speak decent English and will work cheaper. But using a Brit bank? Wheres the savings there?

There are good banks and bad banks. Some of them charge 25 cents for a debit purchase and some do not. As they say, it is best to shop around!

The fees are for insignificant costs that the banks could absorb, but do not, instead, they transfer the costs to their customers, and usually, at a higher premium than what they pay. It is called "Screwing the Consumer".

I don't really care where I get billed from, so long as it's legit. My credit union already is aware that I play Second Life, and if anything suspicious comes up they phone me first, freeze transactions later. I don't like trigger-happy banks, as it were. They can be nice, if something serious happens, but that sounds almost like a nuisance to me. I much prefer them to check with me first, before they freeze any transactions.

Everyone is going to get overrun by the Chinese. It's hardly worth debating.

The world today seems absolutely crackers,
With nuclear bombs to blow us all sky high.
There's fools and idiots sitting on the trigger.
It's depressing and it's senseless, and that's why...
I like Chinese.
I like Chinese.
They only come up to your knees,
Yet they're always friendly, and they're ready to please.

I like Chinese.
I like Chinese.
There's nine hundred million of them in the world today.
You'd better learn to like them; that's what I say.

Seconded.

I like my cc company. Within *minutes* of me ordering my private island, I received a phone call from them to confirm that the transaction was legit, since it didn't fit in with my previous pattern of net based purchases.

There's, uh, probably a lot of things you didn't know about lindens. Another, another interesting, uh, lindenism, uh, there are only three jobs available to a linden. The first is making shoes at night while, you know, while the old cobbler sleeps. You can bake cookies in a tree. But the third job, some call it, uh, "the show" or "the big dance," it's the profession that every linden aspires to.

It is the same outside the US - many bank/cards in the UK for instance charge a transaction fee dealing with foreign currencies - we've either got used to it, or in my case I've found a card which doesn't and which I use now for any foreign transaction!

Is it possible that some American banks are now subsidiaries of predatory UK banks and that's why billing is from UK? I don't know if this is the case.

I know that UK is still pretty big in the banking world even if everything else we once owned is now done by others!

Monty Python already did a sketch about this one.

Nah, China's still basically a third world country. Their military technology is already obsolete. The oft quoted statistic that the PLA can field over 3000 tanks fails to take into account that the majority of them are old Russian T42s, which were designed in the 1960s.

China might not have any long-term military ambitions beyond Taiwan or beyond its immediate neighbours, but it is dangerous to discount it as a mere third world country. Sure, many of its citizens live in great poverty, but the same is true of the US to a lesser degree. China's economy is romping ahead and in a decade or two it's likely to be the world's no.1 superpower with the money and know-how to be the worlds no. 1 military power too. All the rest of the world (including SL) will be able to do is stand by and watch and hope China's intentions remain benign!

I see an RL world in the coming decades that contains 3 superpowers - USA, China and an emerging Islamic fundamentalist empire. All I can say is I'm glad I emigrated to Second Life!!!

Six weeks later no resolution
06-16-2007 02:37
On May 4, I tried to purchase Lindens and was told my credit card was no good. Transaction did not complete in world. Ok I switched to PayPal.

Then my bank called and asked that I verify some info. Well before I could do that, my account was frozen from usage by my debit card - oh I oould get money if I went to a bank's ATM but couldn't complete a transaction online. Even my Netflix billing didn't work.

I called the bank, got it resolved.

THEN I noticed my next statement - on May 3, money was removed - the amount I wanted to use to purchase Lindens - AND a small International Fee!!!

I contacted Linden Labs and they requested the transaction information. I sent it. And another note asking if they had resolved it. And now I will send another one. Six weeks and no resolution? I just want my money in SL - they don't have to credit me or anything...just give me what I paid for....sigh.

jeeze. Typical though. They should comp you a month or two for the trouble, but I doubt they will, and what's more I doubt you'll get your money back. Linden Lab = Horrid customer service.

Or is it...

Linden Lab = No customer service?

are you kidding? while not as advanced as the usa, china is a modern military. the best russian weapons make up a large part of that. china is nuke armed and has demonstrated the ability to destroy orbiting sattellites. i have no doubt that if the usa and china went to war china could bring that war to mainland usa in many horrible ways.
