From: Meade Paravane Going a little off track here.. What ever happened to their thing that walked the grid and indexed every object that was marked for sale? Did this go poof? Oh the sheepbot. Maybe it's gonna come back, looking like Gary Sinise. it would be a big improvement over the ugly SOB that I ran into that last time.

Well I'll be watching it, if only for the novelty of the thing. What I thought was sort of cool was they didn't pretend that it was another VR, like "Your Life" or "Another Life." They actually USED Second Life and the logo and everything. I agree that CSI:NY and Miami are abominations but I'll watch it anyway.

From: Meade Paravane Going a little off track here.. What ever happened to their thing that walked the grid and indexed every object that was marked for sale? Did this go poof? Unfortunately, I believe it is still active. At least, there is still a kiosk on Sheep Island where you can opt out or opt in for that so-called 'service'. I've made it part of my new alt account creation process to pass the alt a LM for the kiosk on Sheep Island, so that as soon as they hit the mainland, and before they purchase a single L$ worth of prims, they can opt-out of the Sheep's Spyware. On another note, ESC is about to release their own SL client. I'm still waiting for a statement form them that the "Sheep Browser" doesn't contain spyware like the Sheep Bot.

He has that same stick up the ass look.

From: Dnali Anabuki Here is a very interesting Promo for the CSI:NY episode Oct 24th starring SL as a location. Even if I had never heard about SL, I would be trying to get in to see this. What do you think? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3-ZmjA7GCzQHa ha...some of you may laugh at my HAV unit...but notice the stock HAV unit on the dance floor in the beginning of the video...you go Hydrogen! My favorite AV shows up in a promo. In fact there are several AVs from the creator of '6ixth Sense' in the video. Excellent choice ES.

From: Argent Asbrink So...LL had better step up, rikki-tiki. Or else the only thing which will be achieved is a showcase of a laggy, poorly-scaled, crash-prone platform inhabited only by the uber-est of geeks - all shuffling around and running into invisible walls, all to the surreal chorus of whining, faceless voices provides That is assuming they are able to get off Orientation Island!

It's too bad that the original CSI isn't the focus... but I suppose with the ban on online gambling, it's sort of difficult to use Las Vegas as a venue here.

From: someone Bandwagon...... jump.... shrug...... I'm so happy that a few thousand people will join SL to emulate the stars of a third-rate TV series. Whoop as they realise it takes more than 30 seconds to get the hang of SL..... gasp in surprise as they give up, retire to the sofa and watch more crap tv...... As we say in the UK, "Does my face look bothered?" very few have gotten to try the new custom ESC sl client (which is what will be 'front-ended' at the cbs/csi website), but it sounds very promising. i know i've plenty of semi-savvy 'puter/gaming friends i've introduced to sl, but they just 'don't get into it' (if the overall gui wasn't so confusing on first blush). even if their client doesn't hold up to scrutiny upon release, it's still the first fire over the bow for alternative simpler clients that are really necessary to help bridge the gap. my un-sl friends really shouldn't have -that- much trouble figuring it out (just getting around), but currently, they do. and after all that - well if they still don't get it - did you really wanna have them around asking questions all the time, but never remembering (like momma and her email from nigeria? 'is this real?' 'NO, momma, NO!!' From: someone Actually, they should make the sheepbot look like David Caruso. He has that same stick up the ass look. ohhh, be nice!! i like gary. he seems like a nice guy. though i am pulling for the continuing february episode for him to change into a 'wonder woman' avi and take up crimefighting as a bitchin' amazon.

This is exactly why I won't use anything but the official client. Not worth the risk experimenting to see which "alternative viewer" is legit and which is spyware/malware.

"This source" is generally considered batshit crazy by most players in the SL community who have had contact with that blogger. I don't even have an opinion on ESC's client, but I do know that looking to secondthoughts for truth is like trying to make sense of the Unabomber Manifesto.

Excellent choice ES. I spotted that HAV unit too. I was rather tickled to see a Monstrous Denotaur like mine in there from Sense/Sixth whichever it's called now as well.

I listened to one of Prok's webcasts... it wandered, backtracked, dallied, and split so many times that by the time it was over, I had no real clue what the original topic was. VERY confusing and random.

I don't even have an opinion on ESC's client, but I do know that looking to secondthoughts for truth is like trying to make sense of the Unabomber Manifesto. I wasn't gonna say it, but yeah; don't believe everything you read. Conspiracy theory enthusiasts, I'm sorry if this ruins your day, but after skimming through those two blog posts quickly just now, all I can say is the author has quite an imagination. About the only thing she got right is that ESC is in fact making a new viewer. Very nearly everything else was pure speculation. I've been using the new viewer for a couple months now. I can't say too much about it yet, except that I'm sure most everyone will be very pleasantly surprised by it. It really is nice. It took me a couple hours to get used to using it it at first, as it's laid out a bit differently than LL's viewer, but once I made the switch I absolutely did not want to go back. I'm very happy with it. I'll E-mail the dev team to let them know about this thread. They've all been working incredibly hard on this, and I'm sure they'll be happy to hear of the interest this thread is generating. And since people obviously have a lot of questions, I'd bet (most) everyone would rather get their answers straight from the source than go trawling through blogs for the latest imaginings of the conspiracy theorists. I can't guarantee that any of the developers will have time to answer a ton of questions, obviously, but I'll see if I can grab one or two to poke their heads in here.

Cool, Chosen, fascinating. Well, hopefully Electric Sheep will give more concrete info about the Onrez Viewer very soon, since basically it releases Oct. 24th. It's press release is the currently featured item on ESC's website ... from that release: Availability The Electric Sheep Company OnRez viewer for Second Life will be available starting on October 24, 2007. New Second Life users will need to register for the CSI: NY Virtual Experience on the CBS.com site, select and customize an avatar and enter the CSI: NY virtual experience with the OnRez viewer. The viewer will also be available to current Second Life Residents. The Electric Sheep Company plans a steady stream of enhancements to the viewer, both in terms of usability and value-added services. Here's a review of it from New World Notes, I've no idea how knowledgable the reviewer is but I found it interesting: http://nwn.blogs.com/nwn/2007/10/worldwide-world.html

Well, I got to my Tivo'ed episode of Big Bang Theory.
It's a new comedy with Johnny Galecki (David from Roseanne).
The opening sequence was 4 nerds playing a raid or PvP, one getting the Sword of Azeroth (WoW for those who don't know).
He goes to eBay to sell it, the next guy stands up and asks, "Who wants to come into Second Life and go swimming? I just built a virtual pool."
JG says, "No thanks, I can't even look at your avatar right now."
Cute little mention in there, funny nerd show.
But I seriously doubt the core of CSI watchers will come running to the comp to register and download a game they've never heard of, to go back and forth with the show. The majority who would be playing along are probably here already.

You know, I'm sick of following my dreams, man. I'm just going to ask where they're going and hook up with 'em later. - M.H.

CSI:NY has over 19 million viewers. If one out of a thousand (.1%) of that viewership decides to give the CSI 3D game a shot, that's 19,000 people.
Note that CSI:NY already has video games for it on the show's website, so for that potential user group, this second life gig will almost certainly be something they at least try. They will be using the simpler browser-like OnRez viewer, and I'm sure going to a CBS version of Orientation Island that simply puts them directly into the CSI:NY game.
Edit: note that the CSI:NY game will simplify the startup experience considerably. You will choose your avatar and go, etc.. I imagine that if someone thinks the game is way cool and they want to join SL for real, they'd create a brand-new separate SL account outside of the CSI:NY game.

From: Bradley Bracken Could this be the beginning of corporations who finally really "get it"? We can only hope. Why? Why would we hope for that? I don't hope for that. SL is supposed to be, "Your World, Your Imagination." That's what I liked about it. I'm not particularly interested in what corporations and media moguls can do with hundreds of thousands (and millions) of dollars in their advertising and promotion budgets. Give them enough time (they've got enough money), and they might "get it," all right. And they will most certainly to be able to afford as much land as they want - after all, their land costs no more than ours does - and whatever else they want. I might hope they would all "get it" if I wanted to come to a place something akin to an interactive TV, where I'm advertised at by corporations while I'm entertained by their products. Seems to me like we already have a lot of that, in the whole REST of the world. Wanting corporations to succeed here is, in my view, tantamount to wanting individuals to fail, so vastly different are the financial resources of each. I can go watch corporations succeed elsewhere. But hey, if that is what SL is coming to, I guess it's what the people want. coco
