Hello,

I have a Dell computer with Windows Vista Premium installed, 2 GB of RAM, and a higher-end Nvidia graphics card (but not the best one). My system's performance in SL has been good to excellent, depending mostly, it seems, on which sim I'm in at a given moment in time.

Actually, I'm excited to see how SL will run on my system when SL has become fully "compatible" to Windows Vista.

I have run Vista with not ptoblems in S.L. and really runds better the XP...but the new download will not install in Vista..even though you don't have to download it.

And Im running a ATI 1650 and look great.

Maybe they will see that sooner or later they need to have full support because most of teh new CPU's being sold today run Vista.

Sorry, but I couldn't help smiling when I read that Vista runs in SL and that you look great :D

Please Oh Please tell me Vista will get me into SL
07-11-2007 12:03
In about 2 weeks I will have a brand new super charged computer.

It's coming with WinVista Ulitmate on it. I figured that I would have a better chance of it working for SL than Basic Vista.

It'll have 2048MB 667MHz DDR2 SDRAM Since the old computer has 512 I figure it should be faster. I also Have nVidia 7900 GS 256MB Graphics Card (for Sonic-C). I think that means it's newer than a nVidia 7300 someone was talking about?

The processors are Intel Core 2 Duo Processor T7400 (2.16GHz, 667MHz, 4MB L2 Whatever all that gobbledygook means. It's supposed to be good.

160GB 5400rpm Serial ATA hard drive. My first computer didn't have a HD. Instead you loaded your programs using floppy disks (it had a k not c in the beginning). So, this much storage seems to be excessive. But, I also know that there is no such thing as excessive storage. o.0?

Now with all that info can anyone tell me if I have any kind of chance of having SL run on it? *.* don't dare open my eyes to find out. lol

I've waited for this for so long it's tough to wait. But, I'm using this time to contact software companies who's software I use to ask if it will run with Vista or not. So far no answers.

I really wish all this stupidly insane companies could play well with each other.

Thanks Guys for any knowledge you can gift me with. :)

And web site spell check too. My my. /giggle

New version of SL First Look with Vista
07-11-2007 18:29
I got a new laptop not too long ago, loaded with Vista. The first time I loaded Second Life, it didn't run. I loaded the First Look Voice, and it ran just fine, better than my old machine by leaps and bounds. I updated today, and now I can't get back in. Is there anyone that can help me?

The 7900GS isn't actually "newer" than the 7300; as a matter of fact it is older. However it is also much better; the 7300 is a budget economy line card while the 7900 is an enthusiasts gamers card. The first number represents the "family" or generation of cards, these are both Geforce 7 series cards which are still perfectly fine for every game currently on the market. For future DirectX 10 games however, you'd need the "next generation" of cards, the GeForce 8 series.

HOWEVER, a GeForce 7900 (high end gamer card) will still outperform a "newer" DX10 compatible 8400GS (budget economy version), and if you had to choose between the two I would definately take the 7900GS.

Usually cards ending in 100-300 are cheaper budget line cards (often piggybacking off the main systems ram/cpu), around 600 and higher is the usual "sweet spot" for mainstream gaming, where you usually get good performance and good value, and 800-900 are the more expensive high performance "hardcore gamer" versions. A 7900GS thus is older "tech" than a $50 8400GS, but still far far more powerful than that "newer" cheaper economy line card.

SL & Vista fine on HP Pavilion s7700n (so far)
07-15-2007 10:56
SL version 1.18.0.6

Audio and video work fine. Let me know if you want me to test anything else.

Systems specs:
- Vista Home Premium
- 2.0 GHz AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800+
- Video is powered by the Nvidia GeForce 6150LE, which features 128 MB of dedicated graphics memory and can provide up to 319 MB of total available graphics memory as allocated by Windows Vista. Nvidia's exclusive TurboCache technology allows direct rendering from the GPU to system memory by leveraging the bi-directional PCI Express bandwidth. The TurboCache Manager dynamically allocates memory for maximum system performance while intelligent software algorithms maximize application performance. (I don't know what this means, copied it off the website.)
- It also offers an integrated audio card that can produce high definition surround sound configurable to 8 speakers. I use the SPDIF audio output to my HT which is 6.1.
- Monitor is a Samsung 61" DLP, 1280x720

Additional comments based on over 25 years experience in sw dev and building PCs:
- don't upgrade an XP systems to Vista, no benefits.
- doesn't matter which version of Vista, as far as SL is concerned they are a the same.

Hope this helps, good luck.
Looking forward to stereo rendering and p2p.

I recently got a Toshiba Satellite with Vista Ultimate. Second Life loads until it tries to load my clothes, and then it crashes. I have no idea what my video card is, just that it's a good card (it plays the Sims 2 perfectly).

How might I find out what my video card is if that is the reason it crashes?

I'm running the Toshiba Satellite laptop (A215-S4807), which has 2 GB RAM, AMD Turion 64X2 TL-56 with the ATI Radeon X1200 graphics card. SL runs, technically, but at a measly 3 or less FPS. It's practically unplayable when doing anything but standing still, and crashes if more than a few people are in the same area. I'm running the latest drivers for ATI and Vista Home Premium.

Any suggestions guys?

I use Vista on my laptop and XP on my PC. SL runs better on the Vista laptop, believe it or not. Both have good graphic cards and 1GB memory.

Still having probs
09-06-2007 07:22
System Specs:
AMD 64 Processor 3800+ 2.4 Ghz
nVidia GeForce 6100 nforce 405
767MB
32- bit OS/Vista Basic

Problem(s):
Crashes w/i 3 minutes of entering world
(Updated driver) Crashes during entry process

Attempted Resolutions:
Updated video drivers
dumped caches
uninstalled/re-installed SL
Scoured forums (SL and nVidia).

The funny thing is, my old system worked fine with ATI + XP, but was slow and suffered power supply failure, so I put her out to pasture. Now I regret not updating her, despite the fact she was over 6 years old.

Acer 9400 - help
09-24-2007 07:25
Okay, I really really need some help. My old Dell 600m Inspiron had to slow of a processor to run SL so one of the reasons I got a new comuter was to run it. Well, you know they all come with Vista now. This is a Acer 9400, 17" wide screen laptop - i am okay on the processor but very very confused about this graphics card thing. It has a: Mobile intel 945GM Express Chipset ? Now folks I don't even know what exactly that is - is it okay - which version of SL do I try to install?

Well, I know this is an old thread, but I'm desperate and don't know where else to go.
This is my situation, I have a desktop, with a crappy old graphics card (nvidia 440 something or other- I think with 64 mb), any way this pc runs sl fine - albeit slow.
But there are 2 of us in the house that want to get on sl, so we bought a new laptop, specs:
Vista Ultimate (6.0, build 6000)
Asus M51Sn
Intel Core 2 Duo T9500 @ 2.60GHz
3070MB RAM
Page File 1169MB used 5154MB available
Nvidia GeForce 9500M GS 512MB with 495MB dedicated memory
250GB hard drive

The blurb on the manufacturers website says "To power the most demanding 3D intense games, equipped with abundant graphics power, with top of the line specs, blah, blah, and a choice of the most powerful graphics the Nvidia GeForce 9500M GS which utilise 512MB VRAM memory management technology which dynamically allocates TurboCache:768M with 1G system memory, 1280M with 2G system memory for maximum system performance"
Well don't know what half that crap means, but it costs a lot of cash.
My problem is I can only stay in sl for a maximum 10 minutes before my av just won't move or keeps moving and won't stop - I know this means I've been logged out, I don't get an error message.
I have updated the latest driver for the graphics card to no avail.
The day I got it, I spent all night trying to sort it out with Linden, who were no help and couldn't make up their minds what the problem was.
Please someone help me....I am pulling my hair out.

Always ensure you have the very latest NVidia device drivers. Some earlier drivers are broken - and some current ones are broken, too. My Mac was doing precisely as you describe until I got it an ATI graphics card, because NVidia and Apple had not chased down the source of the problem. as of about 2 months ago...

I've been running SL Windlight over Vista for the past few months. By stopping the Account Control Panel ACP, this cuts out a lot of the drama Vista makes when installing drivers etc. Whats left, which stops some programmes from operating is DEP. If you have a Dual Core CPU or better, then you will probably find that it is DEP enabled and by installing Vista, this is turned on at chip level and can't be turned off.

I noticed that Java will not run, unless you specifically give permissions to every component of each programme.

My platform runs smoothly with only minor memory leaks after a few hours (around 10+) of being constantly inworld. The biggest 'leak', seems to be the runtime libraries of the graphics drivers failing, turning the screen black. I'm hoping with my new system that has dual 8800GT's with 1gb ram each, as a Sli configuration, will help cure that.

I have installed the latest driver for this graphics card from tha Asus website. Are there any others I should be worried about, everything else seems up to date....I do remember the Linden guy telling me to update the chip set drivers...and when I got mad at him because he had just told me it was my graphics card, he said they are the same thing!!!!!
I don't know a lot, but I'm sure the chipset is part of the motherboard...
Well I have used the Asus live update and seems there are no newer versions yet.
The guy at Linden also told me I should have no problems running Windlight, so uninstalled the regular version, installed Windlight, only to get a message about my graphics card not being compatible or something to that effect.

I got the Nvidia card because on the sl website they say Nvidia graphics cards are superior to ATI with 3D rendering...or something....sorry my memory is fried!
Is there anything else I can try..what is all the 'first look', 'second look' stuff people are talking about...I have no idea
Thanks for someone being there

This is probably more of a connection issue that a gfx card issue. I have a similar problem in some sims. At the hangout (i assume a class 4 sim) i get client disconnects every ten minutes. But in my sim (class 5) i can go for hours.

I just got a new router to see if that fixes it.. should be here anyday now...

There is no hope. You can either run Second Life or you can't - and if you can't then Linden Research inc do not want your business.
