Just adding my 0.02 to this discussion. Vista isn't the issue with SL, it sems to me, it's the third-party graphics driver. A few weeks ago, I fresh installed Vista Ultimate on my Dell Dimension XPS Gen 5. That box has an Nvidia Geforce 6800 with 256 megs of memory. From the outset I installed the Nvidia driver that specifically supports Vista, currently version 158.18. I've had no issues at all with running SL on this Vista PC. What I have had is video problems leading to SL crashes from time to time, always as this Windows error message pops up in the system tray: "Display driver nvlddmkm stopped responding and has successfully recovered." This is usually preceded by SL freezing, the screen sometimes flickering to black and back to normal in a split second, then the error popup, SL crashing, and then Windows back to normal. (I should add, btw, that the only app where I've had this issue is SL. I realize of course that Windows Vista is explicitly not yet supported.) It seems to be a well known issue if discussion on Nvidia forums are anything to go by. Here, for instance - http://forums.nvidia.com/index.php?showtopic=25381&st=400No solution yet in sight, though. One suggestion in that discussion thread that I've implemented is to config antialiasing as 'Application controlled.' It seems to have made a difference with SL as, since then, I've not had any such crashes as I've described here. Mind you, those crashes were pretty random, so who knows. Still, nothing for a few days which is encouraging.

I have the same issues as Jangles, although it only happens occasionally, and I can sometimes be on for hours with no problems. I'll have to try that suggestion though.

I don't know why but I'm SERIOUSLY lagging in SL. I just freshly reformat'd to Windows Vista Ultimate x64 and now after 20 seconds in the game it starts lagging so bad that it's unplayable. Specs: Windows Vista Ultimate x64 AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 4600+ NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GTS (320 MB) 2.00 GB RAM HDD = 185 GB Free And my internet connection shouldn't be a problem either:

The last SL client update brought that error to me, Jangles, and always preceeded by a rapidly decreasing framerate in SL. It tended to be after doing lots of alt-camming around during building, though I couldn't pin that as a reason (like maybe using alt-cam is hoovering up more textures and graphic details due to casting your "eyes" wider than the usual?) It hasn't happened in the last few days, though.

This fixed the ATI Mobility Radeon driver problem running under Vista. http://www.driverheaven.net/modtool/Basically it patches the latest Catalyst installer. This allows notebook owners to install the latest ATI drivers without waiting for OEM driver releases.

I'm an idiot when it comes to hardware and drivers and things like that. I just got a new hp comp, running Vista with an ATI Radeon x1700SE graphics card. I can't find a driver for that exact card and I don't know enough about drivers to guess what else can be used. Anyone able to help me out?

This simple action may help some

I run SL on two laptops, one with Vista and one with XP. They both work 'OK' (in the sense that most of my problems of lag, crashes etc are due to SL overload in the region 35000-39000 online, not microsoft) but I have noticed that with Vista it works better if you run 'disk clean' after each crash - whatever caused the crash.

As I recall the ATi setup is that the "latest" driver pack works with almost all the cards in a "family". However, HP's download and support site is pretty good - doesn't it list the drvier there? At the moment, my Vista machine with an ATi card renders much faster than my XP machine with an NVidia, though I am researching exactly why at the moment. Very recently, Nvidia seem to have segregated their drivers by product - newer cards get newer drivers, which is a major change in their deployment strategy over the last 5 years.

extremly Poor programming in SL
05-18-2007 08:55
SL play a large part in problems in vista. I got a couple of high end games installed in vista, somme old (World of Warcraft) some new (Lord of the ring online) and guest what ? aside from been only one with lag problems, SL slow and crash the video driver on a regular basis. (SL crash the video driver, not vista and not the driver itself).
while any other games play at 60+ FPS on my GeForce 7800 GTX, SL will do arround 30 on a empty sims and will not reach 20 in a normal environement (a sims with building and a couples of avatar).
SL is full of bugs, it's programming is so sloppy it is almost criminal.
Until LL STOP intruducing useless features that NOBODY want and start fixing bug/optimising the client, Secound Life will remain a 3rd rate novelty
By any software standard, SL is still a early alpha preview and is fare from been even a beta.

SL runs fine with Vista
05-21-2007 04:20
Hi,
I've been running SL on my Dell with Vista Ultimate 32bit and it works fine. The graphics card is more than enough (Nvidia Gforce 7x00, don't know the correct number, with 256MB memory). My RAM memory is 4GB so that's also no problem at all. And I've got a total of more than 600GB HDD.
I sometimes have a crash but that's because of the SL viewer not being good enough...
LL needs to do A LOT of work on the crashes and not on implementing new stuff that only causes more crashes!!
Greetz,
Camden

I am having some major issues since the update on or around the 14th of May. I have Vista and some some of the problems mentioned, but nothing i couldn't live with. Now however I can't seem to stay logged in. The minute I zoom in on anything I crash. My research indicates that I apparently have a crappy video card that is attached to my motherboard. What makes me mad, is that this is a brand new laptop purchased in Jan. If anyone has any solutions please let me know. I have tried updating my driver, running under administrator, tried disabling my desktop and none of that seems to help. This is what I have: Windows Vista Home Premium Intel Core2 CPU T5500 @1.66 GHz 1.99 GB RAM Mobile Intel 945 GM/GU Express Chipset family
Any help anyone can give me, would be greatly appreciated!!

i bought an HP Pavillion a1700n w/Vista (Home Premium, 2.99 GHZ, 64x2 Dual Core Processor 3800+, 894 MB RAM, 32-bit, comes stock with nVidia 6150 GeForce LE card)in mid February when Vista first hit the floors and XP was off the shelves. it's the middle-of-the-road-priced one, which offers middle-of-the-road features. no probs with SL or any other programs or webbies. none at all. not even one, except i wish it had a printer port and floppy drive.
the only thing i've noticed is that everytime SL updates its program (from 1.13 to 1.16 in just 3 months ???), it uses up more memory to run SL which causes more lag which makes things rez slower.... but even though it's not been mentioned, i'm sure EVERYONE has that issue.

vista with ATI on the way
05-30-2007 22:31
My new dell Vista 2G dual core athlon is on the way. I upgraded to the 256M ATI Radeon. Ain't no way I am going back to XP. I felt I had no choice but to get Vista. I dont regret it, even though its not really ready for prime time, it will look smart next year.
My experiences with changing out OS is that it is a nightmare, especially on Dell. My plan is to use my laptop XP until Vista/ATI are ready for SL.

When LL takes the time to update SL to the variety of graphics cards used by the people, a lot of people won't have any problems. In my opinion that is. Other than crashing due to the (small) incompatibility of my graphics card, SL works fantastic on my Dell Vista Ultimate machine... Greetz, Camden

I did a fresh install of Vista on my notebook after a HDD failure (was XP). The default Microsoft drivers did not work with SL, and the manufacturer of the notebook has no Vista drivers for the ATI Radeon Mobility 9600 gfx card, but the patched ATI ones work well Gomez

SL won't even launch. Just downloaded the latest driver. Only bought the laptop a few days ago and the driver was a year old!! Some bargain - turns out this "brand new laptop" must have spent 6-9 months sat on the shelf lol. Still technically new, but you know what I mean. SL now working fine for me. Seriously, the latest driver was all it took - for my x1100 ati had one dated 27th of may 07, so I assume there were new drivers for other ati cards too.

Yep, always the way - PC's are generally bulilt months before sale - the same of you buy a new peice of hardware. My advice... Always downlosd the latest drivers rather than use the CD with new hardware. with a new PC, get at least the latest GFX drivers. Gomez

computer crashes
06-19-2007 13:29
I have a brand new Sony Vaio with Vista, 2 Gb memory and an Nvidia Geforce Go 7400 From the first day my COMPUTER crashes when I play SL for a while... a blue screen with a memory parity error.
I've checked the videodrivers and they're up to date. Does anyone have any suggestions? Is this an SL/Vista compatibility problem?

Any help?

What I've tried sofar is a complete system (hardware) check: nothing found. Called the Sony helpdesk and they want me to send the computer for repair.. I don't feel like doing this because to me it doesn't look like a hardware problem. I found out that it there are no drivers for the laptop 7 series videocards for Vista by Nvidia, I suppose each computerbrand has to write their own?! No wonder I've got a lot of results if I google for memory parity error, Vista, Nvidia and laptop... Lots of times the names of Dell and Sony Vaio pop up. So it's seems to be a videocard driver/Vista problem. Yesterday I have all graphic settings in SL at the lowest. So far so good, SL crashed twice but no blue screens of death anymore. What to do next... I guess install XP instead of Vista?

1.17.3.0 won't install on vista
07-06-2007 19:46
I have run Vista with not ptoblems in S.L. and really runds better the XP...but the new download will not install in Vista..even though you don't have to download it.
And Im running a ATI 1650 and look great.
Maybe they will see that sooner or later they need to have full support because most of teh new CPU's being sold today run Vista.

A memory parity error is a prety string indication of a hardware problem The computer or the video card may be overheating, that can cause memory to start failing sometimes. Or maybe there are parts that are going bad. SL heats laptops up insanely
