i think solutions to the landbot situation are premature.
First Linden Labs would have to admit it either wants or doesnt want them.
Otherwise its like trying to figure out how to catch your SLpartner cheating on you, before even going out on the first SLdate.

From: tristan Eliot It wouldn't be too big of a deal to run the client along with the website and use SLurls to map the property. I can't run SL and use the web at the same time. coco

Actually, they can remove the land buying system from in-world without admitting anything or ever mentioning the L word AND even save face at the same time. They don't have to take it out as a reaction to the Landbot pillaging. They can couch it in nice PR language about how it will improve the user experience both in SL and out, increase database capacity back in SL, etc. They have a PR department, they can figure out what to say. And I don't understand your dating example. I do understand parasites and opportunistic feeders like mice and other vermin. You can keep trying to kill them, but they will always breed and come back through some other hole in your wall. Remove the Twinkies sitting out on your counter, or the open grain bags in your barn and the rats eat somewhere else.

As I said in another post, this isn't the prob that LL makes it out to be. Because there are so many interested parties out there, mainly the hordes of realtors, barrons, end-use land buyers, and citizens that go out of their way to ensure fairplay in SL, bots would be wanted felons in SL. You probably wouldn't have to even offer a reward, self interest would make residents keep an eye out for specific bot behavior. If made a TOS violation, all a person suspecting someone is a bot has to do is file an abuse report. If Linden confirms a bot, then swift and blinding action could be taken (banning the IP and confiscating of assets), and serious botmasters wouldn't risk that. If they did, there would be vigilent group of vigilanties to turn them in when they did. Many things in RL are illegal but people still do then, and often, they are caught and punished when someone turns them in. All LL would need to do is be consistent and try to follow up on abuse reports regarding landbots. For efficiencies sake, they could make it a seperate abuse with its own subcategory in the form's pull down menu of abuses, call it botting. (As I've mentioned before, land isn't the only SL industry the risks having bots take over. It was first, but it's unlikely to be last, if bots continue to run around uncurtailed and bring in large sums of money for their masters.). However, your comment about LL not wanting to take sides is a valid one. LL has an endgame of its own and it doesn't give a rat's butt about fairness or customer service. From what has been happening recently, it has more to do with bringing in corporations to hawk goods and services to SL patrons. Once they hit that 1 million mark, they seemed to have written off the common SL man or woman. They probably want to see whether or not their corporate partners want bots or barrons to deal with, and don't want to decide prematurely. Our job, that is those who want to eliminate bots, has got to be to show SL the way bots can harm their ultimate goals for the company. If we do that, they'll change the TOS so fast, not even the best bots could get in one final search. From: Colette Meiji i think solutions to the landbot situation are premature.

Well I know the ageplayers did a ralley at the inworld office of Robin Linden when that issue happened and had a brief Q&A with her. Why not do that with the bot issue? You might get atleast a few things answered or hinted at even. I would like to know why they are not taking a position on this as well. And to get back on topic.. no we don't need more bot threads.

Couple of things
a) Question the premise. Don't try to find out why LL don't limit bot activity because the fundamental premise is wrong. Landbots do not excessively overload the server. Bots run 24/7, land search is fast 24/7 (except when hardware blows up)
b) Question the premise. Don't ask why LL haven't stated their position on bots. LL have stated their position on bots. Clearly. Loudly. Repeatedly. They are strongly pro-automation. Pro-third party viewers. Just browse the blog for the number of times LL have repeated their support of libsl. Or open source.
c) Question the premise. Don't ask why LL haven't solved the bot problem. There is no bot problem. Any problem bots can do people can do better (and with more imagination).
d) Don't reply to these ridiculous threads it only encourages them (by "them" I mean both sides).

And there was me thinking the whole bot thing had been put to an end on the forums. Seems to be that the bots and barons are going to be going around in circles until LL do or say somthing to clarify the matter, and that aint gonna happen anytime soon. The only thing I know for sure is the people who make money from trading land, be they bot or baron, are all a bunch of phone weasels! /me washes hands of the whole bot thing I'm turning over a new leaf, no more complaining about anything from me from now on. Whatever will be will be, maybe SL is about to implode, maybe it's all going to be fine. Either way I'm putting all my forum energy into asking sensible questions, helping lost noobs accross the street and friendly banter. Onwards and upwards Vale

a) Question the premise. What part of "Landbots have created an unfair landmarket" don't you understand? This is not a done deal. They have clearly indicated, they are working on measures to make them "a bad business decision". How and what, remains to be seen.

Think of the phone weasels. For the love of phone weasels, landbots and all threads about them must be stopped! I think that's a valid argument, don't you? Land Searches Throttled?
03-27-2007 14:04
As far as LL throttling land searches, has anyone tried to manually run a bunch of searches real quick? Seems throttled to me from the message it gives me in the client. Just wondering if this is a server side throttle or not.

From: Colette Meiji Ill add some nostalgic Thread closers If you're sick of new landbot threads appearing, then please stop trying to get the ones we have closed. Although some of you may be sick of hearing about the issue and you may think we're just beating a dead horse, this issue is important to some of us and we'd like to be able to discuss it. If you don't like hearing about the issue, just skip over the thread. Why do you have to try to take away others' access to something just because you're sick of it? Thanks.
