Grab the book nearest you. Right now. * Turn to page 56. * Find the fifth sentence. * Post that sentence. * Don't dig for your favorite book, the coolest, the most intellectual. Use the CLOSEST book.

"Won't they reflect negatively on government projects in-world?"

From "The Second Life Grid" by Kimberly Rufer-Bach, in a subsection titled "What about those naked avatars?" It really was the closest to me right at the moment.

Ok here goes....

But the more experienced man - the one who can read his lady's moods and tell when something is wrong - is going to ask her what's up and no matter how many times she says, "nothing" he's going to ask again and again until she starts coming clean and opens up, though, in his heart of hearts, he will hoping to God there's nothing really wrong, and if there is something wrong, he will be able to just fix it because he doesn't want to see her pout.

"People even say that Griboyedov never had an aunt who owned any such property..."

From "The Master and the Margarita", by Mkihail Bulgaov

---

That was from the first book my eyes fell on. When I turned around and tried to see if there was any other book actually closer to me, the *closest* book turned out to have less than 5 sentances on page 56! It was the end of a chapter, and so my response with that book would have been "".

"You are in a dead heat with a competitor."

Dangit, the _closest_ book was the one I use under my center monitor to level it with the others, and it was a PITA to get out from under there... "Dynamics of Software Development", by Jim McCarthy.

"So why all this attention to the details of her dressing and make-up?"

(David Michael Kaplan - "Rewriting: A Creative Approach to Writing Fiction". Ch.4 - "First Revisions, and Openings in Particular: Overly Detailed and/or Repetitious Openings". Just to, y'know, be overly-detailed about where it's from :D)

"Not only is the flowering of global science and technology not an exclusively Western-led phenomenon, there were major global advances in the world that involved extensive international encounters far away from Europe."

Amartya Sen, Identity and Violence: The Illusion of Destiny, Allen Lane, London 2006.

Which statement I happen to think is bullshit but there you go. It was my second attempt, I'm afraid, because the first selection didn't have a fifth sentence on page 56. Anyway all of the books in my office are favourites - and they're cool, in my opinion, whether I agree with the content or not. If I were in the habit of working in my bedroom, you would have had a quote from either Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows by JK Rowling or Count Zero by William Gibson.
